I visited there about 40-50 yrs ago with my man. A fascinating experience and while the guys sorted through floors of ancient militaria, I explored the ruins of the old castle, where Bannerman had caused The words of poet Roberts Burns to be inscribed in a frieze around one of the rooms open to the sky. A piano with giant weeds growing through it, and many other poignant views inside. In the warehouse, one floor knee deep in very old saddles, another floor, something else and much ancient pieces of old machinery, their purpose lost but the decay and rust gave then extra interest to me. I must look for the old photos I took.
I lived near this at West Point for a long time, and saw it often while boating on the Hudson and never realized all the history behind this landmark. Excellent clip!!
I was told years ago that when Bannerman was given a bid on the dock structure he was upset with the cost of the reinforcing iron it would take when pouring the concrete. His solution to save money was to use tens of thousands of cannon and rifle barrels instead of rebar in the concrete. I was also told that at times tons of cargo was simply dumped in the river because they ran out of room or had no one to unload ship cargos. Has anyone else heard these stories?
I first saw the castle from a distance as a young boy going to see the West Point museum. My brother pointed it out and told me it was a haunted castle. After that I had the hook in me and I ended up living in Orange county NY years later. A co worker of mine had a small boat that he used to take out on the Hudson so around the year 1995 a group of us went to the island and walked through the remains of the castle. It looks better from the outside and a distance. There was not much left even at that time. The one thing I remember is we noticed someone had used the place for some black magic ritual as there was a pentagram drawn on the stone floor and the wax remains of several candles. I got my wish, to explore the haunted castle. My next quest is to attempt a visit to North Brother Island
WoW. Today I took a trip up there. Not on the island but on the New York side. I fly My Drone (DJI Phantom 3) out and around it. It's magical to see but I have to edit the footage. Truly tragic to see it continues to crumble.
Hi, I am just completing a 90-minute documentary on Bannerman history in association with members of the Castle Trust. But I would love to include a couple of drone shots of the castle. We don't have funds at this point but I could give you prominent screen credits and a free DVD when it's finished. Would this work for you? Bayley
I've always wondered what's the name of the Island. I would see it on my way up state NY. Just recently I researched the Island and couldn't find it, because I didn't know the name of the Island. Wow very interesting
I'd like to know that too!!! Frank and Martha bannerman are my great great great or great great grandparents I can't remember which lol and I'd love to restore it and live like they did.
If the arch in the water is at it's original height, the water level should have been lower by several meters. If Bannerman really started building in 1901 the water level has risen significantly. I can not find such water rising documented since 1901. Scottish international arms dealer? Triggered...😁 Ps.The building does not look anything they build in Scotland.(satellite images show some star fort angles, current mainstream history connects those shapes to buildings from the 16th to 18th century) Thanks for the intriguing story!!
now THAT would be a cool place to live!, shame the place caught fire, the cost to rehabilitate the whole works would be hideous though. how much of a succes has the trust had in preserving the place?
There is a guy selling a lot of the militaria found in the abandon castle on eBay for cheaper than it should be. I got an authentic confederate saddle shield for 40$
Really there’s only two walls and no building I’m a New Yorker I was born and raised here that’s just a waste of time and space take that shit down there is nothing to preserve their solar island to someone was willing to do something with it

Sadly the buiding filled up with water It’s quiet a beautiful architectural of the history. Remarkable: the government should keep it in shape
My great great great great grandfather was the man that built that.... 😁
yeah and i'm the ayatollah of Iran
yeah and im the ayatollah of iran
Hello, well then that means that you and I are related somehow. And I've the dna papers to prove that I am related to frank bannerman.
This story doesnt add up he most likely didnt build it. It was already built and he bought it.
Bingo. I’m glad you see beyond the fictional narrative (they) are telling us
The structure looks atleast 500 years older than 1851 (year Bannerman was born).
I'm a Bannerman and i belive it should be returned to the family.
Incredible story... gotta say though, "Indians"?? is that a part of maintaining early century lingo - face palm
You’ll get over it.
devout Christians who sold weapons. sounds about right hahahaha
Gotta have weapons to protect yourself against the bad guys. That is the history of survival. Pay attention boss.
Whatever 😎
