ALL Girl Scout and Boy Scout equipment in the 40's and 50's, when my parents were scouts, was surplus Army gear. Tarps, tents, rucksacks and hiking gear was all stamped U.S. Army and it weighed a ton! Both my folks remember the musty smell of the canvas tents and it is a special kind of nostalgia that goes along with it!!🥰
Hemp ropes, life vests and many safety devices came from the navy and Marines as well.

Been watching this place deteriorate for many years and when I was younger (at that point the interior was actually still intact), I thought it was sad to witness the place falling apart. I was also glad when the people who started the Trust got together to save what was left, but nowadays so much of it is gone that it seems kind of silly to keep up the efforts to "preserve" the castle itself. It'd just be saving a couple rickety walls at this point, and there IS beauty in the ruin.

I'm from the area, nice vid! Native Americans called this part of the river the wind gate. Makes you think abt the name of the surrounding town Vails Gate, which is also home to a bunch of revolutionary war goings-ons. Lots of history here in the HV

I am not sure but way back in the early 60's there was a fleet of ships anchored in the Hudson. I am not sure but I think they were WW2 liberty ships and naval vessels from that era. Possibly they were surplus items also sold from the Bannerman catalog? I have heard that a lot of small 3rd world countries supplied their armed forces with Bannerman equipment

Reading a great book at the moment called Killer Heat by Linda Fairstein, one of the murders happens on the island. I would have never known about this amazing little island and a lot of other sites around NY because I’m from Australia.First time I’ve read a book constantly referring to the internet and google maps

Please, Believe what I'm about to share here is the Absolute Truth: When myself and 6 other friends rowed out to Pollepel Island/Bannerman's Island Arsenal in 1992/93/94/95 etc, the Castle Grand Staircase with a Guard Post on the right corner before ascending the staircase (No longer there?), which collapsed in on itself after Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and was the Only real damage to that staircase' entire area which wasn't so crudely demolished as it looks today. . . WHO DID THIS?? It was still together and as presentable as your neighbors property dividing wall would be and Not look as if someone took a sledge-hammer to the whole length of the top stone slabs (granite) that was NOT like that in 1999 and the Full Four Walls of the Main Castle structure were still standing and intact but almost All of the Eastern Wall is now GONE!! There is No rubble on either side of where that Eastern Castle Wall once was, so Where is it? Where did it go?
Why is there Now a Need for these ridiculous (hollow plastic tubes(?)) propped up against the Western & Southern Wall to the left of the once Beautiful & Intact Southern Wall that looks like a Lunatic went Nuts on it with a Sledge Hammer? They were PERFECT & Beautiful in 1999 . . . what happened to them? Is "Bannerman's Island Trust" removing and Destroying Real History? It has been happening for a Long Time, and Everyone needs to believe that because it's the Truth.

Did the "Bannerman Island Trust" approve of the partial Demolition and Theft of Original "Bannerman Castle Material" such as the brick and possibly carved/molded original 'Figureheads and/or Coat-of-Arms Medallions' to be used at the Fake Non-Reproduction of NOTHING that Ever existed at "Bannerman's Island Arsenal" and yet presents this FRAUD to the Public as Original "Bannerman's Island Arsenal" structures, part of the Original Castle, Moat, Drawbridge, Outer Perimeter Defense Turrets etc, etc.?
The structure at the highest point of Pollepal Island that was made/formed/forged and constructed using Original brick, Stonework, carvings, molds etc, of archeological significance and value was taken/stolen from the original for this Fake structure that was Not there in 1999 but built sometime afterwards using original parts from the original Castle which was scavenged for anything to make the Fake look authentic and should those facts alone be enough to sway anyones opinion Not knowing that the Fake was contrived and a Lie explains why the world Is the way it is.
Why were certain parts of the Western & Southern Walls and almost the Entire Eastern Wall, which is GONE and most likely used for building the False/Fake/imagined structure now where there was Nothing but the bare rock and one bench there in 1999? To convince those in the future and make it look authentic when this False Model/Exhibit/Display/Forgery was Never there even 100 years After the 'Bannerman Estate & Castle' was actually built?
There is No debris of that missing Eastern Wall to be seen inside or outside of it is there? NO, because that brick was relocated to the very Top High Point of the Island They are trying to pass-off as the Original Build of Bannerman's Island Arsenal & Castle . . . they DESTROYED the Original that was Only begun to be built 120 odd years ago, was finished and lived in till the Powder Stock Room on the North Side just below the lettering that spells out "BANNERMAN'S ISLAND ARSENAL" blew up and out said by the Insurance Company to have been caused by a clerks cigar ash igniting the storage room, the largest of all others, and Blew Up. It Did happen but the how was Always in question.
Nonetheless, What was done to this Beautiful Marvel was a Crime Against All Humanity, Archeological & Geographical Investigations that were interested in 'dating' it and Everything else that a Man-of-Means who was wealthy and dreamed of having his Own Castle and was entitled to and do with his money as he wanted, there is Nothing Wrong with that. The problem or mystery for the rest of the world is of how and when it was built. I have already given the real estimated date(s) of when it was built but didn't add the fact that I have built houses and Everything that's inside them for over 40 years, and when I first inestigated the Castle I was told by my friend that it was from the 'American Revolution' and I stated that couldn't be so. When he asked why not, I told him that "Iron 'I' Beams were Not yet used in Any Construction much less in castles, nor clothwrapped electrical wires and conduit pipe most likely installed in the mid-1920's to 30's."
He then asked when I thought thisCastle was built and I said, "Just at the turn of the century." He thought I couldn't be right but considered my profession and we all went back to crawling allover that castle, the basement, Sallyport, moat and surveyed the spot where the Drawbridge likely had been.
About 4 days later he brought a book/magazine to my place and said, "Wow, you are right, it was built around 1902 . . " and the rest is all pretty Well documented.
The undeniable Fact is the original was Plundered for it's Original brick and whatever could be used to build and attempt to pass off a replication that resembled the Original but was Never there till sometime after 2000. on the Highest Point of the Island was a Prop that was NOT there or Any part of the Original Build but was made as convincingly as possible to have Visitors BELIEVE that what they were seeing, standing on the "Tourist Center" now seen at the Highest Point of the island that was NEVER EVEN THERE the last time I was there in 1999 and there was NOTHING EVER BUILT THERE and Only a bench was ever there as it was the highest point of the island where a path would take Mr. & Mrs.Frances Bannerman to the top of the Island to see the Sunset or whatever would have come to mind there with maybe a little Erotic exhibitionism or voyeurism. Whoever it was from the so-called "Bannerman's Island Trust" that allowed for the theft and destruction of the Original Castle Wall and the terrible destruction of that once Beautiful Castle Structure that was still in Great shape till parts of the Original were destroyed to make the Fake section that was Never there till sometime after the year 2000. DAMN Them to HELL!!

I do hope this structure survives the intense hatred of snowflakes who are driven to pull down monuments of people and things that link us to our history. Afterall, Bannerman was a war monger or could be viewed as such by those coming out of our universities now who are intent on wiping out our history. Its the sad shape of things in our society now. I'd like to boat the Hudson and ride around the island. Maybe one day I will be fortunate to do so.
