Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. Arcade footage via MAME.
3. The Japanese version of this was called Street Fighter Real Battle on Film.
4. There is also a FMV game on the Saturn called Street Fighter II Movie which is mostly based on the animated film around the same time.
5. The arcade version of Street Fighter The Movie has never been ported to anything.
6. The console version has never been reissued for anything.
7. Though the actual film was considered a huge disappointment, it still made nearly 100 million dollars on a 35 million dollar budget.
8. The guy that did the screenplay, Steven E. de Souza, also directed it.
While it is unfortunate that the movie was not good, it was a sweet gesture on Raul Julia's part, upon learning he was terminal, signing up for the movie as a final gift to his kids because they loved the game.
Tbh I love watching the movie just for his performance. Truly an amazing actor
For you, it was the day that the great Street Fighter: The Movie: The Video Game graced your suggestions.
For Sega Lord X... It was Tuesday.
😅Wednesday here in the 🇬🇧
There it is.
Holy crap, it actually IS Tuesday. Well played. SLX should have taken advantage of this fact.
Underrated comment.
It looks like they took the arcade sprites and scaled them down bilinearly in a computer application, making them extremely soft. It would've looked much better had they had redigitized the assets at the new size to begin with.
Hi Game Sack
This game clearly sucks Joe’s sweaty sack.
Sack you sound like a game developer
I wonder if they were just trying to smash this out as quickly as possible while fixing the mechanics and whatnot. I'm not sure if it sold well or not.
5:30 I love how the 5 and spacing makes it look like "shit super combo finish"
I don't know how I missed that but thank you. That really made my day. 😂
I cant unsee this since AVGN mentioned it. Btw I own this game at least on the Saturn (maybe also on PSX) but I never played it since its so ugly.
@@e.r.8710
I mean the arcade game takes graphics hands down no doubt about it. I guess the ideal version would be the arcade graphics with the console version's everything else.
Came here to say "It's not that bad, quit being so hard on yourself."
They should have had Guile start every fight dizzied due to all the problems that they had with Jean Claude partying in Bangkok while they were trying to film.
That “5 HIT COMBO” had me for a while… 😂
I remember watching it at the theater and thinking “holly crap, Chun Li is incredibly beautiful “. More than 25 years passed and Ming-Na Wen is still incredibly beautiful (not to mention how talented she is).
I played the arcade back in the days, didn’t like it that much… never been a MK fan, it looked a lot like MK.
Seriously. She and Kylie Minogue both are fine wines.
To be totally honest, i prefer the Saturn/PlayStation version by many miles. I know the graphics are not the best, but the gameplay is far more tight than the Arcade version, in my opinion.
And, how ironic, the "EX moves" mechanic from this game would be a staple in future SF games.
Great video, SLX! :)
Never played the home version of this, but I remember being mesmerized by how good the arcade version looked. I'd love to see someone take the art assets from the arcade version and improve the gameplay. Considering what modders have been doing with other 2D fighters, ripping their sprites to run in Mame fan projects, it seems possible.
Haha I remember not liking the movie at the time and thinking this game was a MK ripoff, but it was a decent rental!
I felt like I was the only guy who liked this game.
It wasn't that bad
It was good to me also.
no your not the only one, I had this game as well for my Saturn. I actually enjoyed it.
I played it in the arcades I feel that this is underrated
Not great not terrible
3:43 SHIT COMBO
Sonny Jim!!
That's exactly what I saw. It took me a bit to see it for what it actually said.
swacked
Woah it's the shooty guy.
I love the movie! it's one of those "so bad, it's good" type of films. Highly recommended when you get drunk with your friends :D Plus Raul Julia was excellent as Bison RIP.
While I liked a number of the other actors, Raul made the movie a lot better and played off the other characters really well.
Unpopular opinion: I never played this on Saturn (never had one or played one) but I did play this in the arcade and frankly, I loved it (despite not being impressed by the actual movie). And if I knew it was available on Saturn I would have got one. That's right, just for this game. There, I said it.
The arcade version is awesome! Thank goodness for MAME.
What was weird as I remember people praising the Saturn and PlayStation version back in the day over the arcade because it was so close to the original games but yikes what an ugly, ugly mess they were.
It's a shame too if they just taken the arcade and tweaked the gameplay instead of throwing everything out and trying to make a brand new game (quickly and cheaply I might add) it probably would have turned out much better.
To me this game represented the best of what MK and SF2 had to offer
@@elgatofelix8917
It was weird because everyone always wanted that crossover MKvsSF and this was kind of a weird way that actually happened probably the closest we'll ever get.
I just recently played the arcade version yes it’s very fun and the version we should have got on console 😊
Time to pause my Netflix, new SegaLord video!
dolph lungren should have been guile
3:29 there called ex moves(originally es moves in darkstalkers). sf didnt get them in the main series until 3(alpha didnt get ex moves). now its a main mechanic in modern street fighter.
The amount of coke that Jean Claude took was insane. I love reading behind the scenes interviews from the director. That stuff is hilarious
I've bought and sold this game many times over the years. The presentation truly does hurt it, but it's still very charming. The soundtrack to me is one of Capcom's best, and stands with SF EX3 as one of the great underrated fighting game soundtracks.
One of the very first games I owned for the Saturn. I honestly played it a lot more than I’d like to admit. I spent a lot of time trying to beat trial mode with every character and playing against my brother. Not as good as the actual SF2 games obviously but it’s fun despite its ugly washed out digitized graphics.
I remember people back in the day saying they preferred the console version because it played more like SF2 too bad it's really ugly. I mean the arcade version might not have been perfect but yikes it was a lot more of a looker than the console version that's for sure.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Yea i definitely preferred the home version, it was uglier but it played way better. The arcade version wasn't made by Capcom and it shows in it's gameplay. I did like the effects and graphics way more tho for sure.
@@orlanzo2621
Just imagine if they had been able to put the two versions together and make like a perfect version that had the gameplay of the console version with the looks of the arcade. I mean sure it would still be the best version of the least liked of all like Street fighter games but still that's something.
Hey brother I'm going to open a retro gaming store and just want you to know I'm thankful for the inspiration you give me.
Cool a retro game store (as an 80s 90s gamer, this makes me feel old) What's the "newest" game they sell?
Last time I was this early, it was still "only two weeks to flatten muh curve"
Loved this game and still play it from time to time. Maybe its nostalgia , I had great memories of the game when it came out.
I literally just purchased this game on ebay today lol
Watching! Sega Lord X always makes me happy with nostalgia!
Greetings from Venezuela! 🔥💓
Whenever I strut through the forest, surveying all that is great and wonderous around me, it's not with the song Stayin' Alive in my head, but with Edmond Honda's Theme at 7:45
Do you know by the way was Edmond really the abbreviation for the E or do they just make that up as far as the game lore not in the movie which I don't know what if anything that was based on.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Yeah Edmond is E. Honda's full first name. It's just abreviated to "E" in the games.
@@sasquatchintime
I can see why they did, Edmund Honda does not sound like a cool video game character. It's weird I've heard that name so many times I always forget it's an abbreviation.
Wasn't the deal with the arcade version that Capcom wouldn't give the dev access to game data so they just had to get a Super Turbo machine and basically had to eyeball the whole thing? Some YT channel did a thing on this game and that is really all I remember from it.
This film was made of 82% cocaine. RIP Raul Julia 😭😭😭
Considering what was going on I have the utmost respect for Raul Julia. Here's a man dying of cancer and he's on the set making a movie right to the end. I tip my hat to you sir wherever you are.
"Street Fighter 2: The Movie: The Game: The Trading Cards: The Coloring Book: The Underoos: The..."
Despite some of the problems I do like the Saturn version since it does play similar to SSF2T. I do wish some more work was done to it but overall it's not the terrible game so many try to make it out to be when there are games out there that are far worse.
For the arcade version, even though it's rough in gameplay it has that special kind of brokenness that makes a person want to keep trying to beat it if you're willing to actually have fun with it. Once you stop comparing it to other Street Fighters and start learning things about it you'll see it's actually fun and shouldn't be ignored just because a certain group of people don't like it because of their standards.
This is going to be great !
Interesting factoid: this game used the Capcom Qsound that was used in games like Suoer Turbo, Armored Warriors and Street Fighter Alpha.
Street Fighter: the Movie: the Game: the Review
That was almost my title.
Street Fighter: the Movie: the Game: the Review: My Reaction (Gone Wrong)
Spaceballs: The Flamethrower! (Da kids love 'dis one!)
The 1:08 poze at the end of the movie with all the fighters doing their signature winning stances , was the Coolest thing I thought as a kid of course , now it’s very very cheesy 😂
Just to clarify some of the points in the video description:
The home version of the game is just a slightly jankier Super Turbo with digitized assets made in-house by Capcom. It's not great, but it's a better playing game than most people give it credit for. Playing a reskinned Super Turbo absolutely has its appeal. Live action Akuma is also... silly.
The arcade version of the game is actually a wholly different game that only resembles ST. It's made by another developer (Incredible Technologies, that mostly just makes casino games now) with minimal oversight from Capcom. It has multiple supers per character, which is neat. That's about all that's neat, though, the game is terrible other than the spectacle of playing a video game of a movie about a video game.
One of the designers talked about this on the SRK forums ages ago. They tried to get the source code so that the arcade game could match Super turbo, but capcom just gave them an "LOL".
@@DragonSlayerKyo That early 90s 'Capcom Unity' :^) Also, hi. You don't know me, but I'm pretty sure I see you on Fightcade every so often in the poverty fighters channels.
@@ThePageofCups I do log on from time to time :)
I'm not the most up to date on happenings in the video game world, but the existence of this game leads me to wonder if we will ever see a Mortal Kombat the Movie: the Game.
Arguably they could do this with Mario Bros too
Well the closest we’ll probably ever get to that was the “movie pack” DLC for MK11 that had models(and voices) of the actors that played Sonya, Raiden, and Johnny Cage from the ‘95 MK movie lol
@@orlanzo2621
Honestly, I'm glad that's as close as we ever got. Seeing how even the arcade version is turned out I think it was best that this little trend died here and was never really picked up again.
No need. Starting with Mortal Kombat 10, the game is already completely convinced that it's a movie, with a production budget to match.
If we do get one, it'll probably be missing a ton of characters from the games such as Kung Lao, Stryker, Kabal, and Sektor as those weren't in any of the movies at the time.
@Sega Lord-
Did you play the 3DO version? If so was it around the same time, or a long while later?
They could have chosen a better font. I honestly thought it kept swearing at me after a combo.
Sawada's special is awesome. The raise your hands if you're sure special HA!!!
I remember really liking this game back in the day and wondering what all the negative feedback was about. It looked well enough, played great, and had that nice music video at the end i think for beating it on the hardest level in i think street battle. Its a worthy game.
Mostly because it was just awkward super turbo with worse graphics.
@@MarginalSC i really liked it. Graphics was probably a little bit weak for 32 bit, but was on par with the mortal kombat games. Play was very familiar with turbo.
@@dad7275 I hold a grudge against it due to breaking a Saturn pad trying to do Ryu's super move. Those OG pack in pads were kinda flimsy.
@@MarginalSC i will admit that I played it more than any Street Fighter game on Saturn. What can I say, I just liked it.
Ah more memories from my childhood:).
I love this game. It has the best ending of any fighting game. There's something there... ❤️
oh gawd. sawada also has a special sepuku attack where he mimics slashing his belly and your opponent is struck by the blood splash. def a wtf moment when i first saw it.
The first time I played this game was on the PSX. I didn't know about the arcade version until maybe a year or 2 later to be honest. I have to agree, the arcade version does look better, but the home version, in my opinion, plays MUCH better. Same thing I said in a video about this some time back. This game is literally Super Turbo, but looks like Mortal Kombat. My friends and I played the hell out of this game because it was the closes we had to ST back then.
I completely feel that. I lived in an area where I played a lot of different arcade fighters, but I only got to play Super Turbo a couple times on arcade. If you didn't have a 3do, you weren't playing it at home either. It wasn't until the ps2 Anniversary Collection and Capcom Arcade Collection, is when I got to play it, but by that time I was into the Vs. Series and other stuff
@@atj10884 Basically the same with me. The only time I've played a remotely arcade perfect version of Super Turbo was when a friend of mine had it on PC and it came with the white with gray 6 buttons pad. That was it. So yeah, we've played the hell out of this version of the game and honestly enjoyed every bit of it. But like you said, by the time we finally got Super Turbo in a more common system, I was in the VS series, Darkstalkers, and KOF series basically hardcore.
@@NewLevel84 yes I came across this game in a trade for saturn games and I like it for what it is. It also can be pricey when looking to buy it so I'm glad I already own a copy
I remember playing this on a Saturn demo in my local Blockbuster. It looked decent, but the controls just didn't live up to the classic Street Fighter 2 feel. Still an interesting footnote in the Street Fighter history. And Kylie Minogue...yum!
I have it on my arcade machine and play it quite regularly. :)
Hell Yeah ! The arcade version is actually not that bad.
Yeah it's so weird I remember people dumping on the arcade version back in the day but honestly that would be the version I'd play. The PS/Saturn version looks butt ugly compared to it.
Edit: Ok, make it one of the first rather than the first. My mistake on that one. I’ll be the first to say I have little experience in the fighting game genre or much knowledge on their history. Sorry about that.
This was featured on Digital Foundry’s look at the PlayStation launch (in this game’s case, North American), and they made a point about how this may actually be the first fighting game to feature a story mode. Thinking about that and the many fighting games after it that would feature story elements, including future Street Fighter entries, I’d say this game may have been influential than its given credit for. It’s true that games like Tekken did the story especially better, but this game did plant the seed for a significant development for the fighting genre, and for that alone it is a noteworthy entry in fighting games and the Street Fighter series.
Ehhh, i don't know about that. I'd much more credit Art of Fighting 1 or Fatal Fury 1 as the first fighting game to feature story elements in it's arcade mode. AOF 1 especially was pretty heavy story wise for the time.
@@orlanzo2621 Yeah plenty of fighting games had a story mode, or a cinematic story. Especially SNK fighters. Even one of the sequels to Fighter's History that was released on the super famicon was basically nothing but a story mode with battles. I can't say I'm a fan of the idea because you're always limited to 1-3 characters in story-focused fighters.
That is false cause both Shaq Fu and Double Dragon V had a Story Mode and both came out in 1994 for the Super NES and Sega Genesis, one year before this game got release. All the SNK Neo Geo fighting games had story in them except for the so call dream match titles which doesn't had story (and even if they do, those are not canon to the actual saga of that series) cause those brought back dead characters from past games against new and current characters on the roster. Games like Samurai Shodown 5 Special, Samurai Shodown 6, Fatal Fury Special, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, KOF 94, KOF98, and KOF12 all doesn't had story as those were just dream match titles.
Atleast Akuma was here
In the arcade version he was available by default, in the home versions you need a code to unlock him. Also Akuma doesn't had his Raging Demon super in these games unlike in Super Turbo and the Alpha series.
Love how in the game they made Wes Studi (Sagat) taller than he was in real life, cus otherwise Sagat would’ve been under 6ft 😅
Totally missaw that 5 shit super combo and saw it as. Shit super combo.
Another great video .this is by far my favorite channel great work lord x 👍
dropping dhalsim was probably because they couldnt animate him right. getting his arms and legs to look right when they stretch would have been a nightmare.
More like nightmare fuel knowing how the rest of this turned out.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu im trying to think how they could have done it. you would have had to do something like sheeva or motaro. probably way to expensive to do especially when they were working on so many other higher tier games.
Believe it or not, This was the first Sega Saturn game I ever played. I later got the PS1 version for Nostalgic purposes and consider the movie a guilty pleasure. (If anything, It feels more like GI:Joe with it's simplistic "Good Vs Evil" story.)
Not a memory that we needed to embark upon again. 😂
We had our fun with it.
Sometimes it's just as fun to look back at some of the failures as it is to look back at some of the successes.
I loved this game for Saturn. I need to get it again! It was the closest we could get Super Street Fighter II Turbo without buying the Street Fighter Collection for PSX or SAT or buying it on a 3DO.
It's not great, but it was a (near?) launch title, and I'm inclined to forgive minor missteps like this at the start of a console's life. I'm less inclined to forgive the gameplay of the arcade version of SF:TM, which is clunky and broken beyond belief. Count me as one of the players who prefers the way the console versions play, ugly or not.
We need Street Fighter: The Movie X WWF: In Your House.
Considering the modding scene I wouldn't be surprised if that already exists somewhere.
That is the trippiest version of a Street fighter game I've ever seen in my life it looks like mortal Kombat it figures that a system like the Saturn would get this game and it wouldn't be on any others probably those graphics wouldn't be able to work on anything but a 32-bit system man this makes me want to get a Saturn
I actually bought this game back in '95. It's not good but I actually really enjoy the music. Definitely an underrated soundtrack.
I dont think capcom was able to do better animation.. the game uses the Original Super Street Fighter 2 turbo engine in the background. The game Is the SSFT2 with some tweaks. So the game must be limited to the animation and speed of the original.
To quote fightersgeneration
"Capcom copy-pasted the digitized character sprites over to the Super Street Fighter II Turbo engine, but completely reworked the visuals and audio. Dee Jay and Blanka were added to the roster, as footage by the actors was recorded earlier but the team didn't have time to put the data into the arcade version"
So I forget though was there ever a reason why they didn't use more of the arcade version, was it just they didn't want any association with that company anymore or what?!
Awesome video! I really enjoyed a look back to this game! Awesome stuff SegaLX!
It is definetely not the worst fighting game! it's rather decent actually!
There used to be a thread from one of IT devs that worked on this game that discussed everything that went on behind the scenes and it was really fascinating. Looks like the thread doesn’t exist anymore though.
That was for the arcade version, not this port.
Yeah, the game isn’t pretty, but its plays way better than the arcade. I find it quite interesting, not the worst fighter out there
From 1 sega fan to another, I freakin love your channel 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Street Fighter: The Movie: The Arcade Game: The Home Version
Wait, you're telling me E. Honda stands for Edmund Honda? 🤯
*Just got back form the gym and your video is ready and waiting for me!* 💪💪
They should make a movie about this game.
I worked for an Arcade Company that had one of the Arcade Machines on one of my Routes. I was just a couple of years removed from being a Competitive Street Fighter Player in LA at the time. The Arcade game looked Really Good for the time but played Horribly. Got the Saturn version when it dropped and it played a LOT better but looked like crap. If the Saturn version had the Arcade's Graphics or close to it or Capcom had done the Controls on the Arcade version it would be remembered a LOT more fondly than it is now.
It would have been awesome if the arcade version of Street Fighter: The Movie was ported on to the Sega Saturn and the PS1 back then.
Not too good graphically (it almost looks like just a 32X cartridge, with the characters suffering from reduced sprite size and detail), but it does play better than the arcade. You don't get Bison's troopers such as F7 and Blade, but Dee Jay and Blanka are back. I wonder if PS1, being less friendly to RAM hungry 2D fighting games, was the lead platform instead of Saturn.
When the movie was been film, we use live down the road. Our school bus dropped us off in the afternoons at the movie set. We got to meet all the movie stars and play a bit of basketball it was a highlight. One of favourite games of all time was been made in a movie. Unfortunately it wasn't very good and the manga version did it justice!
As usual Sega Lord X is right on the money!! I had my Saturn at launch and for the first few months was dying for some new games to play. This game came out at the end of summer before the holidays and since the was no other Street fighter game on the console yet it scratched that itch till Alpha came out.
the day Sega lord X reviewed Street Fighter the movie the game was the most important day of his life. To Raul Julia, it was Tuesday
I played that game on the arcades back in the day. I always thought it looks better then mortal Kombat at the time. I think the game was decent for sure, not bad like many of the other digitized mortal Kombat style visual clones
I remember seeing this game in the arcades and thinking Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter is definitely happening now! Unfortunately, we are still waiting for that an entire quarter century later.... damn I'm old...
I misread 5 Hit combo as "s*** combo"
SEEEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAA! Thanks Lordie!
Love the font, when it says "5 HIT COMBO" it looks like "SHIT COMBO."
Nice video as always. I totally dismissed this game back in the day... no regrets there, but maybe it's time to check it out.
5:30 I thought it said "shit super combo" at first
I met Damien Chapa (he played Ken),though most people remember him as Miklo from blood in blood out. He autographed my Ken funko pop
One of the few games I own for my Saturn lol. For what it's worth, I think this plays better than people would like to give it credit for and had an at least memorable attempt to do something different with the Street Fighter IP. This game made more of an impression than the 3 EX games did, for instance.
I think the EX games are all right.
It's just a shame we didn't get something much closer to the arcade with this at least visually. I think if they had been able to bring the visuals of the arcade but the changes in gameplay they did for the console at the very least it would have been a good more memorable game.
To be honest, i kinda like this game. I equate it to SF Turbo crossed with MK digitized characters. At the time, no SF home console game looked like it. The soundtrack was and still is very cool in an quirky way. It had an almost immersive feel to it. The movie battle mode was cool in that it let you pick your path based on events in the movie. I still like playing a few rounds of it even today.
I had the game when it was new too. I got it for similar reasons. I was able to get a new game at that point, and there wasn't a great selection, so I ended up with it. And it was a holdover until the holiday season, as you say. I enjoyed it for what it was at the time, but it was hard to go back after I had my fill. One thing I've learned over the years seeing these digitized fighting games is that Midway was way ahead of everyone else in making those graphics work. Not only did their stuff tend to have enough animation, they also understood what movements worked and what didn't. For The arcade version of SF the Movie, there's better color and animation, but it still looks ugly and stiff to me, with goofy moves. Whoever directed the motion capture didn't understand how to make some of the frames look good. Looking at Sagat, he's got awful key frames for a number of things, such as his crouching. It looks unnatural. Blanka looks awful in every way, from design to animation. Bison has a terrible flying stomp move. It was a sign of the times and developers and players had to learn what worked and what didn't. Considering how much animation was cut and how they took color out of the sprites for the home version, I suspect the game assets took up more space than one would expect for whatever reason.
Whoever chose the font either didn't know what they were doing, or knew exactly what they were doing, as "5 hit super combo" looks like "Shit super combo finish" and that's pretty funny.
5:31. I'm sorry but that reads "Shit super combo finish"
I had this, SF Alpha and Golden Axe: The Duel for the Saturn. I definitely played this one the least. Not that it was bad, it was just that SFII had been milked to death at that point and it didn’t add anything new from the last game (SSF2T). With the arcade version, they at least tried to innovate.
Street fighter the movie was bad but good just like the mortal kombat movie
i like how the burned animation turns them into m bison from sf2
5hit combo indeed
Even though this version looks uglier than the arcade version, it at least plays better and had better balance. Also this is the first Street Fighter game that finally gives Akuma his identity as his appearance in Super Turbo and X-Men: Children of the Atom didn't reveal who he is or his name.
Yes! I haven’t watched the video yet, I’m on the intro commercials. I just absolutely love this video game, there’s so much hate for it but yet it is a part of my youth and a part of life for me as a teenager.
Finally a review that is fair and doesn't shit on the game just because it's fun to do so.
I kinda liked it too. Wasn't really good, but wasn't by a long mile the worst I've played.
Got this for my PlayStation when I first got it. I didn't care much for the film, but the game wasn't half bad. For me, it was the controller that was the real issue. Sony desperately needed/needs a proper fighter controller that isn't hot garbage. Regardless, this is one of those games I want to re-add to my collection. I just have not be able to find a copy in the wild. I'd be happy with a Saturn version since I have both PSX and Saturn in my collection.
I kinda liked the Arcade version but after i played the game on a Saturn i almost felt in love with it
Totally agree it is a mixed bag that I go back to once in a while. Sawada was supposed to be a big deal though but they messed him up.
The arcade version is damn sexy. If I could own any cabinet it would be that one.
Imagine if we had gotten a mortal Kombat the movie the game. We should all be glad that we never did.
Ah yes, being a young SF fan in the 90's, watching a movie based on a beloved game and Kylie Minogue in a leotard... what's not to like?
Also, we used to make fun of how a 5 hit combo looked like it said "shit combo" just like at 3:43
Nice review, thanks!
Blade is missing in SF : the Movies consoles. (Playstation, Saturn)
Only in arcade !
Guile : Jean-Claude Van Damme
Cammy : Kylie Minogue
RIP for Raul Julia (Mr Bison)
When i was a kid, I honestly loved this game at the arcades, crazy combo and super flashy...well i loved the movie as well when it came out hahah
