•Story: Musicality runs in my family. I started to play bass at 10 years old. Lyn-Z from MSI was the reason I started. Eventually went to a music academy/college and was one of the few female bassists. But depression and anxiety got the best of me and I quit during my final year. I wasn’t as good of a musician I thought I was, I failed.
5 years later, I’m 24 now, I still haven’t picked up my bass and now my chronic illness has completely taken over my body and the small bit of life I have left.
I still am and will always be a musician and music lover at heart. I miss it so much..

Take care, Lilo. If you'd like, I hope you find the ability to pick up the bass again. Even though you didn't finish music school, I hope you find joy in the fact that you did get to play for those years and spend time on your instrument when you were able to. That's time spent very well. I'm 31 and have started playing bass six weeks ago. I don't think I'll every be 'good', but I want to do what I'm passionate about so who cares. It took me so long to get to a place where music is central to my life, bc I kept pushing it away bc I though my time would be best spend on my career or having an aesthetically pleasing physique. I admire you for getting in touch with that part of your authentic self so young. Hugs.

I got into bass for the same reason- it's underrated. I also picked it up because of Les Claypool and how cool he was. Ever since then I still kinda play Bass but I mostly write music with guitar now.
But I'm still a bassist at heart. Every time I pick my Bass up I get an amazing feeling whenever I make a jam.

I been playing bass guitar since I was 12 in the 2000s and I was told the same thing in rock there wasnt enough bass players so youd be in more demand as a bass player. Now I'm 24 and I make electronic pop/trap music lmaooo not what I pictured in the when I was a kid or even teen

Bassists have the best job security second to drummers. Whole reason I got into playing bass was because the only person I could jam with in highschool was a drummer and it sounded hollow whenever there wasn't low end to glue us together. He was a Rush fan so that was my intro to playing in odd time too.
You should check out the Kazoo, it's a fantastic instrument. I highly recommend reviewing the song "You on Kazoo", it's one of the best in the decade. I feel like whoever composed it must have been a god at music theory - they really remind me of like a Jacob Collier/ Danieal Ceaser type vibe.
Please talk about this sort of stuff more, I absolutely loved it, was so good to hear about your passion for the bass

The first instrument I ever fell in love with was the fireglo Rickenbacker 4001 bass, the sound of it is so punchy and in your face but can be smooth and silky as well
Especially in the hands of people like Geddy Lee and Paul McCartney (and countless others), that bass sound is addicting to listen to
Haruko from FLCL also uses one, which is how I found out the model existed. Only ever got to play kne in a local guitar shop I can't remember the name of. Sadly, the shop in question hasn't existed almost 7 years.

I got into the bass in a very similar way. I started as a drummer, and I'd like to think I was pretty good, but there was definitely a bigger demand for bass players in my local scene. But I always gravitated towards songs with interesting bass lines so it felt natural to me to pick up the bass. Listening back to some more recent music endeavors I've participated in I've noticed that a lot of the vocal lines end up getting written to the bass lines I wrote, and some of my favorite parts come from when I deliberately lock up with the drums tightly. I love listening back to that music we made. I'm also in a spot where life got in my way and I haven't been able to play my bass as often as I used to and it is very frustrating knowing that I used to be able to play more proficiently and that my fingers won't do what they used to do so it's hard to go back and practice the basics. Anyway, thanks for this video. It's exactly what I needed to help motivate me to get back to doing something that I enjoy, which is jamming out on a bass guitar.
Even though I usually like to play with my fingers, I can appreciate using a pick with the bass guitar. It can really add dynamics and clarity to a bass line. It worked for Yes. Roundabout anyone?
This is awesome! The first part of your bass origin is a EXACTLY how I started. Grade 9. Thanks for sharing! Guitar friend encouraged me to pick up bass. I can now play a few different instruments and music is everything. Started with metal and worked into filthier, heavier music but not just those genre, just my favorite haha

I was the bass player in a band me and my friends created called Bent. I never owned a bass and our only show we had booked got cancelled (thank god because I never had or ever owned a bass)
That kinda rhythmic control is one reason i play 7 and 8 string, like people shit on extended range guitars for being "djent sticks" but being able to lock in rhythmically whilst also being able to add melodic elements is awesome, fingerstyle is amazing, hearing the growling lows and singing highs.

This is something I can relate to. I didn't truly listen to music until I started playing bass. Trying to learn a bass line by ear requires good headphones. It's also a great way to meet people and make friends. I used to bring my bass to college all the time to just practice in public and I was approached by many different kinds of instrumentalists and I ended up joining a band for a while. I also met some people to play with by just going to guitar shops and playing bass there. Also met a guitarists at work and then we started to jam every week. Learning an instrument is a fun thing to do.

As someone who started playing music on a super technical and rigid instrument (oboe), I've had a lot of trouble "loosening up" when I try to play bass. I find it impossible to solo or noodle or really do anything that is not preemptively mapped out because my first 10 years as a musician were about perfectly executing exactly what was on the page with no room for improv. Any tips for someone like me who doesn't know how to play anything except what the sheet music says?
be okay with making mistakes. play what makes you feel something. experiment. trial and error. but yeah just play what sounds cool for you. keep doing it till it feels natural to explore it
Learn your scales, fuck them up and write them down. Study greats. The quickest way I've found to learn is to write, and then play, then I'll try to fit whatever lick I'm working on in a solo to a backing track.
Improv is not about making up new lines as you go, it's about learning enough that you are able to string together your vocabulary and make something new.
Music theory is a lovely little friend for coming up with ideas of what to practice, basic scales of course aswell as more exotic concepts. Like secondary dominant scales and all the cool things you can make with diminished scales.
Also, for bass, something that really changed things for me was not playing on beats 2 and 4. It really is the start of creating groove, I mean, just listen to the line on "What's the use" Mac Miller
I picked up bass for almost the same reason. All my friends played guitar and/or drums and i also wanted to pick up and learn guitar until my friend and current drummer of the band we later formed told me that i should try bass instead, citing similar reasons. I took his advice and have absolutely no regrets. Anytime any musicians i knew needed a bass player i was always the go to because i was (and am still) the only bass player they knew. My guitar playing friends cannot say the same. Also speaking of pick players i play with a pick because of my heavy influences from Tool. Never got why people shit on pick players, every way to play the bass is the right way.

One overlooked bassist imho is Nate Newton of Converge. He serves the songs they play so well, and his tone is absolutely incredible. Other favorites of mine are John Entwistle of The Who, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse and Jesse Keeler of Death from Above 1979.

As a bassist I can attest to looking past the surface intruments and finding more depth in songs and past layers of songs I loved that I didn't know was there and heightened my appreciation for music production.
