Well I've met Ian brown three times once near Midland hotel, other two times near afflecks Palace. Can honestly say he's always been seriously nice guy he was interested in what I was saying my autistic brother was getting an Ian Dury album signed and he was fantastic to my brother. So everyone can have different experiences.

      .lol..
in all fairness the punk tuneless approach you exhort didn't really apply to The Stone Roses who singer excepted great players.....and when I saw them back in the day playing live..(.i was lucky enough to catch them before they kind of ground to a halt.)..there was nothing punk or tuneless about Reni ,Mani who were a super tight but at the same time masterfully elastic rhythm section and John Squire's guitar was channelling all sorts of influences from hendrix to johnny marr to jimi page....at time he looked lost in what he was playing and the great sound he was coaxing from his guitar...a Gretsch country gentleman and a strat. ..into 2 yes that's 2 Fender twin reverbs ...When I saw his band the seahorses ..(who would have surely gone on to greatness had they held it together)...he worked the same melodic magic...but with a guy who was a good singer and could play guitar so it was even bettet.....as for the examples I gave (tom waits van halen Suzanne vega) been arty ...maybe......to be fair Van Halen lyrics were pretty brain dead...but much like the Roses I didn't listen to Van Halen for the Lyrics or Dave Lee Roths singing ... come to think of it ...DLR was like a rock version of Ian Brown...all swagger and pout...lol...I dug the musicianship of the guys who could play instruments ....
Hey man I loved The Stone Roses....I'm happy that I'm old enough...(actually im old enough to have seen The Jam play at Sheffield Top Rank lol )..to be around to see them play Live and others of the era..like The Happy Mondays....Inspirational Carpets...The Charlatans ...Punk...well before my time...I retrospectively enjoy The Sex Pistols 1 album and the clash...but that's kind of it...see I do so like a catchy song...

Have either on you been to one of his recent gigs? I went to Brixton, I wasnt expecting a great show due to the wave of bad press however it was one of the best gigs ive been to this year, I liked him up there on his own, his stage presences was colossal, his choice to not play roses songs is a good thing in my eyes, even with a band they arent going to sound as good as the roses.
his solo stuff is different, its got a lot more electric style beats and has a big hip hop vibe, which i love.
the videos online make him look awful but when you are in the crowd its just great!

I was at Brixton too. I tried to sell my ticket beforehand, but couldn't shift it, so I went, expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised. Started off better than he finished and I question some of the set list, but he really does have a great back catalogue. He was also incredibly engaging, connected well with the crowd and, surprisingly, came across as a sound guy who cares about his fans, which is almost the opposite of what I've always expected of him.
I do however agree with the notion that if you make a lot of noise, you've got to be able to back it up. And it's twice as bad if you proclaim greatness but produce cr@p.
His political stance, however, is very dividing and I have to choose to ignore it for fear of losing some of my favourite music. Unlikely to see him again though.

I've read a lot about John Squire being difficult to work with. I think Chris Helme echoed what Ian Brown got annoyed with when playing live, in that he always wanted his guitar up so loud that nobody else could hear themselves.
Who knows where/why they lacked motivation as a band, but I always got the impression that John Squire was so talented (as a guitarist and an artist) that he's happy to work whenever. Like he doesn't need to prove himself, and doesn't necessarily need loads of cash/success to demonstrate his ability.

Oasis stopped doing c*ke after Be Here Now, and there was a noticeable drop in quality with their following album, and 90% of the rest of their career (which contradicts the point he is making).
I remember at the time, everyone was saying they shouldn't have given up (half jokingly of course).

I'm not sure about that criticism. While I don't agree with everything folks such as Ian Brown or Morrissey say, I do enjoy the fact they upset the apple cart. That was always something that made musicians fun to watch. The Sex Pistols often talked a load of old cobblers, but I liked the fact they did that. It's depressing to me that in this era of stuffy political correctness, many people are quick to jump on bandwagons and hate people. How boring that we are expected to 'like' musicians who fall in line. What did Brown ever do that was that bad, and I mean highly unethical, totally prickish? Not much, but we are expected to dislike them now. And as for talent, some of the most offensive people in history have been highly talented. One of my favorite authors is Louis Ferdinand Celine, and man, did he publish some rotten literature (his pamphlets), but his anti-war writing is unmatchable. Brown is fine, IMO, and I certainly am not going to jump on the bandwagon of hate because popular culture, the slaves to morality, think I should. It's this kind of tribalism that leads to horrible things happening in the world.

I've seen Ian Brown quite a few times live in Dublin. When he's on form he's fantastic, saw him in the Olympia when he was doing a tour in 2005. He had a nice mixture of solo and Roses songs (first time he started playing those songs since the band first broke up_ in the set list. His band were great. Then saw him at Dublin Castle the following year for Heineken Green Energy Festival. And he was awful, his voice was shot and he was doing a few Bob Marley covers in the set.

He had to do it himself. Sure he could have had a live band, but if you can't see why, after his public statements, why he felt he needed to do those gigs, on his own, from him to his loyal fans, then you need to rethink it.

I don't mind him playing to a backing track BUT he should have made it clear that was the plan before selling the tickets and he definitely should not have been charging the money he did. The stone roses first album is one of the best albums of all time imo, but they spend 5 years fukkin about after ir was released and never got near that quality with second coming.
