  • In this video, I explain the basics of keyways, what they're for, why you'd want to use them, and how to make your own. They're a great way to tranfer lots of torque reliably.

    This is the kind of approach I love. A seat of your pants method that seems to actually work. No expensive tools, just a bit of thought and common sense. Well done mate.

    Very informative video, just one tip. The keyway should be cut inline with one of the set screw holes to help prevent the key from sliding out of the shaft. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you very much for your usefull lesson ... i just bought a broach and its tools, i'm just learning as to eventually use it, i didn't know the trick to use it in reverse direction after each "pass". A nice trick ...

    I've never heard of keyway broaches. Neat how simple they are and how well they get the job done.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I always assumed it was a lot more complicated. A lot of people just rely on set screws, but they aren't terribly reliable.

    Excellent video; I've been wanting to get a broach set, but never have seen one used.
    One bit of trivia though - The 'keyway' in the hub or gear is properly called a keyway, but the one on the shaft is the "keyseat".

      In engineering we always called them keyways in both items.

    can you cut a slot in in the middle of a 30'' metal rod with this. This is for a adult tricycle axle for mounting the freewheel adaptor and chain spocket that uses a key.

    Very good explanation, but I have a question.
    How are the keys secured in place?

    • @anthonygarcia1762
      @anthonygarcia1762 ปีที่แล้ว

      The keys are secured in place by the setscrews on your sprocket. Set screws need to align with your key to hold it in place. I recommend using double set screw to prevent it from coming loose.

  • @Crookqt
    @Crookqt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: If I have just a key place on a flange coupling, does that coupling still need set screws to hold the shaft? And do the set screws hold the shaft or the keys? So basicaly I'm asking if the couplings are built with both key ways and setscrews and can they be built with just one or the other? If I just have the key there is no way it will slide along the shaft?

    Do the key ways that are cut have any sort of taper to the finished result?

  • @a000ab

    How do you get the gear not move alongside the shaft (when using keyway instead of setscrew)?

    • @jebsdaddy141
      @jebsdaddy141 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need a set screw directly over the key and that will keep it secure.

  • @rickeydenler2385
    @rickeydenler2385 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    what if you bore a shallow hole under the set screw in the shaft

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure what you mean? But set screws can easily shear or deform the shaft. I'm DONE with set screws ;-)

      Yes, true! That's a benefit, but it also tends to scratch against the mic, which ruins a lot of footage too, so there's a trade-off!

    Robert - cool vid. I didn’t know how keyways were made so this is nice info.
    Just curious - with your 440 you probably could mill the keyway slot in your wheels and gears, right? If you used a small (1/16”?) endmill (axis of wheel aligned with axis of mill) and then relieved the corners (so it would look like a half dog-bone) I think you could effectively make the keyway feature. Maybe that’s harder than just using the keyway tools but curious if you’d considered that or think that could work. Regardless, there may be a keyway cutting set in my future!

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is possible, but it's MUCH easier and better to just use a broach. doing the dog-bones would weaken those areas, which isn't what you want to happen, IF you're needing a keyway...

    do you have a balance issue with the key way? i know that its close to center but i have never used/done a key way.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. It would throw off balance if you are spinning at high RPMs. Thankfully, for the final output of the drive, it's only around 1K RPM, which isn't fast enough to create any balance issues. But if it was at the motor's shaft, which spins considerably faster, it could be an issue.

      Can i add my opinion ? After having cut the key, another piece of material would compensate its space, generally you cut off steel and again put a steel key ... no mass lost ... true ?

    Hello Robert, I have an urgent Turnigy 9x question for you. We have the Turnigy 9x with Orange RX module in it. We are trying to get it working with our lemon RX receiver (DSM2). Currently, we can bind no problem, but the channels are all mixed up so the robot is uncontrollable. We have tried switching from modes 1-4 with no luck. It is also worth noting that although we have a Turnigy compatible module, it does not fit the 9x. We were able to remove the case and get it to fit though. Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. It's been awhile since I used the 9X, but you should be able to re-map the channels. I'm not sure how to do it, but I did it on my old radio because I'm a lefty and switched things around a bit.

    Ok but how dose it stop it from sliding along the key

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a spring clip, set screw, or other methods. This is just for the key, so the two rotate together. For holding the two captive to each other, you need something else. Sometimes there's just a slot or channel milled in the shaft of the motor, which will hold the key. It just depends on your application. For MY stuff, I just make sure the component that goes on the shaft can't slide of the shaft, it's held captive on both ends of the shaft, so it can't slide off.

      You aren't wrong. However, I'm allowing people an option to donate because when I cancelled my Patreon account, several people still wanted to show their appreciation. It's simply an option. If you want to donate food and water, I'm not stopping you. But if people want to donate to me, that's their choice as well. Everyone has a choice with their money and they can certainly donate to several causes.
