Hi there. 2 thoughts:- 1. A good definition of animism comes from tying animism to the word "animate". So, here goes ... animism is the belief that everything is animated by spirits. For example you have tree spirits and mountain spirits. 2. There is nothing wrong with valuing different people differently. You would have to be a nasty person not to say value your mother above a complete stranger. Me, I value myself most highly, then family, then countrymen (who gave me my culture, my environment, just as my parents gave me my early enivronment), etc. And that hierarchy comes about because I am capable of love and loyalty. Only a cold person would put a stranger from a far away land above their own family.
Awesome, thanks for chiming in! 1. I like your definition because it aligns with my worldview somewhat, and, it also limits animism to people who believe in/acknowledge a 'spirit world'. I'm also really enjoying the concepts of vibrant/vital matter (Jane Bennett) and agential realism (Karen Barad) that offer non-spiritual options to also understand animism. Tim Ingold and Donna Haraway are also great in this space (all drawing on Latour, and Deleuze). 2. Yes, I think it's how most people are wired in terms of 'in-groups' and 'out-groups', and preferencing those who meet more of our core needs over those who don't. I wonder though how animism would or wouldn't change practices of oppression. Someone being of lower personal priority doesn't have to justify oppression. In terms of 'being cold' if you put strangers above family, I don't so much agree with that - I think there are some people who are deeply called to serve humanity and to follow that calling means they somewhat neglect those closer to them. It's not a life I'd want, but I wouldn't describe them as cold, just wired a bit differently.
Could ANIMISM be explained as a human projection onto all other beings so that the former can attempt to understand the latter? Just a thought about anthropomorphising.
Yep, the difference between animism and anthropomorphising is the topic of my next video - it's a really good question but of course a bit colonial. The concept of projection is a cultural concept so very reasonable to use it as an analytic in cultures that use it, but problematic to sit outside a culture and describe what they are doing as projection if it's not part of their epistemology/ontology. I read it that the issue of subjectivity is at the heart of your question - how can we know or come to understand 'others' that seem so unlike ourselves? One way is to imagine they are like us. I think this is the epistemological challenge of animism/posthumanism - can/how to know something about an 'other' without making it similar to us. I think anthropomorphism is partly clumsy animism in a culture that lost its animist-know-how.
Hey there !, I am analyzing your TH-cam Channel. You are a struggling creator generated from your TH-cam channel. I got same issue, 1. If you do SEO on your videos then it is expected to be very easy to rank your videos. For example, your video views, likes, comments and subscribers will increase day by day.
You have a lovely, melodic voice. And I fully agree with your point of view here. Cheers!
