  • Jason uses a Barreto 712 Trencher in this first part of a French drain installation. With 150 feet of French drain to install, digging by hand wasn't really an option so we rented this Barreto trencher from Home Depot. Make sure you hit subscribe so you can catch the rest of this French drain project.

    Excellent. Just what I was looking for as I take on a waterlogged property in need of several trenches. Also like Robbie T's suggestion of a truck, I suggest a 5x8 utility trailer, more room than the average pickup and much lower cost.

      A trailer would've helped immensely! Although cramming the thing into my car provided more comedy, especially for the guys working at the Home Depot rental center. I'm sure someone lost money betting that I wouldn't get it in! :p

  • @TraumaIllinois
    @TraumaIllinois 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    ive seen other videos say that the 6" trench that most trenchers can do may not move enough water and you should build wider with an excavator. What do you think about that? Id rather DIY with a trencher than an excavator. seems a lot easier and cheaper to rent.

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, I suppose it depends on how much water you need to move. 6" seems to be working fine for us but if you're in an area with high water issues, you might need something more robust...

    Thanks for the video. How close with this trencher do you think you could run along a sidewalk if the sidewalk is straight? Do you think you could trench an inch or so along the sidewalk and have one sides’ wheels on the sidewalk (so the saw part is right next to the sidewalk)?
    Also do you think cardboard can be put under the other sides wheels so the dirt would be spit out on the cardboard and not on the ground? Thanks for any help on this.

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would go through smaller tree roots, maybe up to half an inch in diameter. I ran into some larger ones but had to cut them out by hand. It's ok to do as long as the roots you're cutting through don't cause a tree to become unstable.

      Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective!), we were happy enough after painting the cabinets that replacing the counter-top became a lower priority. We need to close off a few other projects before revisiting the kitchen, mainly the yard drainage, our laundry room makeover, and a Murphy bed build in our office so we have a spare bedroom when needed. It's still on the list though; we'll definitely get to it at some point! Thanks for watching.

    For a newcomer - needing my hand slightly held 😅 how did you measure the depth in which you dug as you went? Also, can you not trench on slopes with the machine? - have about 150-200 feet to dig.

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just dug the trench and measured the depth afterwards with tape measure (or more specifically a level I have that has measurements on the side). You'll need to make multiple passes to get the depth and width you want. You can trench on slopes but the slope I had to dig on was far too steep to do it safely. Use your judgement and err on the safe side. This particular unit will dig 150-200 feet quite quickly if you don't have a lot of roots and/or rocks (or chunks of concrete in my case...). Good luck!

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This particular trencher digs a 4" wide trench. Your pipe should fit, but you wouldn't have any room for gravel around it. If that's what you want, it should work for you. Good luck!

    Nice video. To get to the desired depth do you trench a certain depth and then go back to the beginning and set it deeper and continue until you get down to 18 inches or do you set it to 18 inches from the beginning and try to do it in one pass? It looks like you did multiple passes to keep from overloading the machine, am I understanding that correctly? Thanks

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the late response. You are right; it took multiple passes while lower the depth a bit each time to get it to the full depth.

  • @griff0612
    @griff0612 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for the video. how realistic do you think it is to use this in rocky soil? we live in Round Rock, TX, which is probably the limestone capitol of the world, right next to the quarry....And we have a very rocky property. I bought a jackhammer recently and used it when replacing fence posts. So, in my head, I imagine using the trencher for 30 seconds, hitting rock, shutting it off, breaking down the rock with the jack, and trenching again. You think this is realistic? Or it would destroy the trencher?

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the late response; just getting through some older comments now. That does sound like it would be pretty tough to work through. You might need to get something like a Kubota. I know for the first thirty feet I had to do, there was a lot of concrete buried under the soil and I had to stop every 6 to 12" to dig something out. It was painful!

    I want to understand the pace of these things.

    • @Handyverse
      @Handyverse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really depends on what the ground is like. It took me about two hours to go the first 25 feet but then it only took me about the same amount of time with the trencher to do the remaining 125 feet. It was really slow when there were large rocks and/or chunks of buried concrete. With softer ground, it rolls through relatively quickly. I also had to spend some extra time widening the trench as it's only a 4" trencher and I didn't a 6" ditch. Keep that in mind when you're looking for one. Good luck!
