Like there can only be one kind of woman who raps. She's an incredible storyteller, rapper, and so to limit what she's doing to being the best for half of the population is so weird. What she does is better than what most MCs do. I agree she's light years ahead of most other male rappers (and in fact last year I started called men who rap "male rappers" just to point out how silly it sounds when we break up rappers by gender. Just because there are such big differences in the vocals between most men and women's voices. I tend to prefer female vocals over male but this is obviously not always the case. But I also think of my favorite vocalists in the way that you are speaking of. I honestly think it's partially to do with how much I enjoy making categories and lists lol.
While I understand that she speaks from the viewpoint of a woman, to me as a man, this is perhaps one of the most relatable love songs any rapper has ever written. The reflection. The admittance of naivety and the "hurt people hurt people" vicious cycle. The finding of self. The acceptance of scars. Thank you, Jean.
One of the most beautifully written rap songs ever. The way she subtly switched from speaking in the third person at the start of the song to first person by the end, which helps signify her coming to peace with all the heartbreak. Amazing. A masterpiece of a record

When the writing hits on all cylinders as on this song, shifting perspectives at ease, the creative license she gives herself to contradict, the stark relatability by telling a specific story- this is what this fucking genre is about. Most "rappers" spit words to a beat. What Jean did here was glide over it. So smooth, so dope. She found a way to make a painful song beautiful. Classic.
She should be up there with the greats in terms of exposure, her lyrics and story telling are top notch. Really surprised that no major label took a chance with her and gave her freedom to do whatever to make the record.

Returned to this project recently. It still sounds great. Mixes sure are dirty but it's raw and honest and emotionally affecting. Her writing is so non-technical in the best way. You don't even notice how little she's rhyming cause of the way she uses rhythm. Really a unique and original artist. Beat is fuego too, love them old soul bangers
