The dance which Lugh performs at the second battle of Maige Tuired served to not only encourage his kin but also to mock the fomorí. Holding one hand behind his back and jumping on one leg was in mockery of the fomorí's often amputated forms. They are ancient and primordial beings, seldom had they all their limbs or both their eyes
We are in your debt sir. This is no petty information. I have struggled to understand why there was not more written on Lugh and why so much was so vague. But I recognize the voice of the gods when they speak through men. You are a brave individual indeed. Which makes it no surprise that the God of bravery would choose such a one for his purposes. This was an absolute honour to listen to.
This was absolutely stunning. You've painted the most Full portrait of Lugh that I for sure have encountered. I see Him as the Genius of Life, who sends all things hurling toward their Destiny, and whose will for a thing to Be, binds that thing into Being. Rain and Lightning are just his more noticeable tools. This gives me a profound new take on the Sky God, the High King, and the idea of Gods _Altogether._ Writing them off as "the sun" or "a river" is an apalling misrepresentatin.
Completely agree. Natural phenomena are just the physical manifestations of metaphysical truths. That doesn't mean we ought to dismiss nature, tho, but people unfortunately fall too easily into the naturalistic interpretation.
Yes, it seems to me that the "God of" template doesn't seem to fit Irish or Wesh deities well. The deities seem far more complex and nuanced, the natural world (sun, rain, wind, lightning) is more like their tools or weapons than the description of their whole being. Often things are written in riddle form so it may point the way to their nature, to say "storm" or "sea", but those do not encompass them entriely. Skill was also far more valued culturally and that may have been the most fundamental description of Lugh. Another reason is that you very often find different deities with affinites for the same element. It's more of a Greek thing to neatly package gods as being "of" something. Then again, one reason for thinking of Lugh as a sun God is that being fostered by Manannan (the sea) and Tailtiu if you consider her to represent Earth may be a riddle for the sun setting and rising again.
I sadly do not speak Welsh, but know this, I fully support the dignity and ancient pedigree of the Welsh people, hopefully I shall make it there one day, where The Last King, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd fought and now waits to rise in defense of Wales.
@@Mohrlaen lol dude, is your culture so fragile that it’s just your blood that carries through time, and not actual culture, the stories, the little moments of worship to the old gods, the little people, etc? I feel like if there were actual globalists they would be doing other, more important shit than this.
@Cormac Mac donnacha Show me evidence of Celtic culture in Ireland ie pottery, weapons ect. When did the change in culture take place? because research shows that there was no change of culture when these so called Celts arrived on our shores. Also where were these great Celtic warriors that fought Rome for so many years? I mean if the came to Ireland surely we would have evidence of weapons ect. When the Norse arrived started raiding Ireland the Irish were ill equipped to battle the Norse. Fighting with a small round shield and spear. WE know that the so called Celts in Europe( Gauls, and Germanic tribes) had weapons such as swords, ax shield ect.
I love your content, you do a top notch analysis of Irish mythological topics. I think your channel and celticsource have the best content so far on this topic on youtube. I say this as a person who reads the translation of Lebor Gabala Erenn and other such texts and middle welsh poems and tries to make sense of them. I like how you have a fresh perspective that is grounded and goes deeper than previous analyses I have seen in research papers to this topic!
This was absolutely fantastic. I’d imagine the Odinic connections were left out because of the long rabbit hole it would lead down, this archetype is so very old within Indo-European Pernnialism. Excellent overview.
True. I'm now researching that "Odin" rabbit hole, and it's a doozy! The archetype/motif covers thousands of years and thousands of miles. Mind blown. ;)
Tuatha De Dannan came from Northern Greece via Scandanavia then Scotland before landing in Ireland, the Firbolg came from Southern Greece and that is why they were shocked to find that they spoke the same language. Probably also the similarity with Germanic and Celtic Myth
Ooooh, I have an early start tomorrow but I will thoroughly enjoy going through your videos when that’s all done. I’ve loved mythology since I was a child and you seem to have figures that aren’t often spoken of that I will happily learn about. It’s a joy to have found your channel, thank you so much for creating these. You’ve made what will probably be a bad day into something to look forward to.
Fascinating. Thank you very much. Have always been intrigued by Danu's pantheon & Lugh in general. There's just not enough DETAILED information & sources on Celtic mythology, compared to, say, Greco-Roman, Norse, Chinese or Indian. Bought 3 books on Celtic mythology in Ireland but they're almost impenetrable without the historical cultural context, & almost NOBODY knows for sure the historical sociocultural background of the Celts, unless you're a scholar devoted to multiple academic disciplines of archaeology, comparative mythology, religious studies, historical linguistics, etc. Seems like Lugh is a deity with dual characteristics like the pairs of Apollo/ Hermes; Odin/ Loki/ Amaterasu/ Susanoō; Osiris/ Seth.

@Carson Lee Couldn't agree more brother! Not only with Celtic but Germanic also, especially related around the cow in both Hindu and Germanic cultures.
Hey Mac! I had a flash back sometime in the 80’s about Lugh’s name. The Greeks said Apollo came from the Northwest, from the North Wind, from Hyperborea, the fruitful land. In Wales the word for son of Mac is (M)ap or Ap because of the Q & the P swapouts I believe, b’tween the Gaels & the Cruithne/Britonii/Pictish dialect. It doesn’t take much to see the resemblance of Lugh’s name to Apple Lou or Ap a Leu/Lugh, as in Son of Lugh. Avalon & other similar words for apples and Apollo in many languages. Many’s the time I’ve had intuitive insights about the origins & meanings of certain words that upon research proved correct that I’ve come to believe my intuition. Never could verify if there’s any actual connection with Lugh being the father of Apollo as there are major similarities to the rule of & qualities assigned to each as you pointed out b’ween Cian & Lugh. If you know of any connection on this let me know. As far as the diff dialects of IE have same sounding words with diff meanings, so this could well be the case instead. Comes to mind the first confrontation of the Milesian Gaels & the Tuatha De in which it is said they understood each other because though they spoke diff dialects of the same language, it was similar enough, perhaps as say Portuguese & Spanish. It is little known about the connection b’tween Druidic & Brahman/Vedic traditions, beliefs & societies, and to Egyptian/Sumerian as well. Or that Greeks such as Pythagoras earned their ‘shingles’ studying among the Druids, saying they were a major source of their science & natural philosophy as well as the Egyptians & the Chaldean/Magi. Just t’ought I’d toss that out to you Mac as to whether you’ve come across anything related to that possibility. Perhaps I’d need an actual Lamhfada of a fella like Lugh to determine that. Anyways, I subscribe to & enjoy your vids & its good production values, though I don’t always agree with some of your conclusions or theories, lol. And also you are the first person I know of to see the personification of Lugh in terms of Clouds on so many levels. A Cloud God! The God of Clouds! The first divinity to wield sunglasses or blinds as a power! lol. Papa Sun, he be get a bit hot ‘round de collar, mon. I love that analogy, it makes such good sense & is brilliant. Thank you. Trying to sort it out is a mess. There's a ton of overlap and conflation between cultures. Half the time it's a pain to differentiate between translations of names or honorifics. Baal, Belial and Satan all seem to be titles used for various entities, people and behaviors. Lucifer isn't either a name or an honorific. It's just a term that wasn't translated in specifically the King James Version of the bible and therefore came to be used as a name, for example. The use of those terms have created "The Devil" in most people's understanding. The devil, from what I can tell, is multiple entities conflated in to one and it makes it even more difficult that... and I don't know why nobody ever points this out... The conflation seems to come from these entities all being from the same culture, thus having similar capability across the board. Breaking them apart into specific aspects causes that fact to be lost in the minds of people who don't study any of it very deeply. Every ancient culture across the planet seems to have been influenced by the same "third party" culture and depicted their capabilities as they could. All similarly. There's almost always a God of the Sun or Sky that presides over the pantheon and a God associated serpents, Venus, water and/or wisdom who is at odds to some degree with that ruler. The Hebrew Bible honestly makes no clear reference to most the stuff people know about the lightbringer and yet. The one point it's referenced is actually referring to a king from way back. It being not translated from Latin in the King James Version Bible is how we all know "Lucifer." It's only used the once and it's literally in reference to belittling a king who'd fallen from his former stature. Otherwise there's "Satan," the dragon who attacked heaven and was cast out, but that's basically all that's said about that, too, and yet everyone attributes to the Bible this story from all these other cultures that the Bible itself doesn't even seem to reference. Kinda odd when you think about it.
@@Sunshine_Daydream222 the "snakes" that st patrick rid Ireland of is a metaphor. There is no fossil evidence of snakes ever existing on the island of Ireland. What I believe they were talking about was the druids and pagans that were there when they arrived.
Druids passed everything down via oral tradition. And I'm no fan of Patrick although he was made a slave by the Irish so you can see him having a grudge. And if it wasn't for the Greeks, Romans and especially Irish monks who actually had a deep appreciation for their heritage(granted they did flavor some of the stories with Christian ideals) it's very likely we wouldn't have what we have today.
I believe the bell beakers who arrived in Ireland came from the Netherlands. I wonder if the celts who took Ireland from these bell beakers inherited Lugh from them.

@@oniryu246 That's because there is next to nothing from ancient Gaul other than statues and inscriptions often pairing Celtic gods to the closest Roman equivalent. Many of the Celtic names match up with names in the Irish and Welsh stories. There are also a couple of quotes by Roman and Greek authors about Celtic gods so we can compare the Gaulish god Lugos with the Irish Lugh and Welsh Lleu and know that the Romans regarded him as similar to their god Mercury, who in turn is similar to the Greek Hermes. He means the original Irish and Welsh stories, translated obviously unless you speak middle Irish or Welsh. Most of those stories contain one or more gods in them but often in a dumbed down form as the stories are the result of pagan tales surviving amongst Christians for centuries before the earliest are written down. The story of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table are a medieval series of tales based on earlier Welsh/Breton tales with various add ons from European sources but many of the knights are dim survivals of earlier gods. Gawain or Gwalchmei has three sisters (triple goddess) for instance and his mother is given as Anna (possibly the same as Danu) or Gwyar (gore, bloodshed) and likely others. While it's disputed, in Leicester there is an area called the Dane Hills where a witch called Black Annis once lived. It's quite possible that the names Annis and Dane both preserve the name of the goddess. Black Annis certainly sounds like a good match for a goddess of gore. Another is the knight Giflet or Jaufre who comes from the original Welsh Gilfaethwy, also a son of Don (Danu). The names are the same but heavily altered over time. The other material is from other Indo-European religions and mythologies like those of the Norse, Greeks, Persians and Indians.

Wow, I'm hearing so many references that also correlate with many Bible stories. Learning of all this ancient mythology has helped me leave Christianity. I'm sure there's a reason there are so many similarities of ancient beliefs.
lugh sounds like he can be compared to Shu as he holds up the sky. Shu separated Nut and Geb in the ancient egyptian mythology. speaking as there are a few egyptian gods. such as Thoth, Ra, and Anubis (when he is weighing the souls of the dead.)
It always confused me when people say that Lugh is the Irish sun god. I always thought that the Dagda was a sun god because of this connection to Newgrange. Does anyone know where this claim that Lugh is the sun god came from?
ferno056 probably because Lugh was a sky god and had power over the sun, I assume just a miscommunication as the tales went through the ages as most stories go the way of a great game of Chinese whispers and Lugh is the god of sky and skill though his abilities and jobs were various they were probably confused with what he presided over as he was an incredibly accomplished god it’s easy to see where things start to get a bit complicated
So, if Lugh is associated or attributed to all of these things, what need did the Celtic people have for other gods and goddesses? It's something I could never quite figure out as I read the Celtic stories.
Yes, he has a great number of responsibilities, as do many other gods, such as the Dagda for instance. Also, other deities also perform the same roles and so there is overlap. Polytheism isn't about one god simply does this one limited function. The gods are energetic beings. You can wield a hammer, so can I, though we might do it slightly differently.
It just shows how little we know about the divisions of the gods and their attributes. Even the Irish sources are centuries old within a Christian tradition by the time the first are written down. The Gallo-Roman religion consists of artwork with often dual names but that doesn't mean much other than the local people saw some qualities in common with Gallic gods and Greco-Roman ones. So we get Cernunnos type seated gods with bags of money or cornucopia instead of holding a torc, or other gods who are mostly Greco-Roman with just a Gallic name to suggest where an older god might once have existed. There a few groupings too. We have Cernunnos, Mercury (Lugh?) and Apollo which some say represent the same deity. There is Esus, Toutatis, Taranis, the gods named by Lucan who describes their sacrifical rites as hang from a tree and stabbed, burnt and drowned in a vat respectively. Toutatis is also equated with Mercury and Esus with Mars. Another by association are Sucellos and Ogmios, both who are shown in Gallo-Roman art looking like Hercules though in the case of Ogmios there is a direct relation as he is compared to Hercules by ancient authors but rather than a god of physical strength, Ogmios is a god of eloquence - the strength of words. When you start throwing in comparative religion things get messy. Mercury amongst the Germans represents Woden. The Roman day of the week Dies Mercurii was "translated" by the old Germans into Wodan's Day - our Wednesday. Wodan, going by the Norse epithet for Odin is the allfather - the father of the people. This fits in well with Toutatis being Mercury as Toutatis means tribal god, related to Irish tuatha (folk/tribe). Odin had one eye after being sacrificed by hanging on the world tree and losing his eye in exchange for knowledge/runes. He also wounded himself with his spear. This is similar to how the sacrifices to Esus are carried out. So with a link between Esus and Toutatis are we looking at the same god in different guise or have attributes gotten flung about a bit over time and what perhaps related to one god gets given to another? There is another Celtic tie in with Odin and that is Eochaid Ollathair where Ollathair is cognate with Allfather. Eochaid is another name for the Dagda meaning something like The Good God. Dagda is portrayed as having a cauldron and a huge club he drags along the ground. He appears similar to Sucellos who carries a club when in the guise of Hercules or elsewise a large mallet on a pole and a small bowl. Sucellos means something like the good striker. Sucellos is also associated with Dispater, the god the Gauls supposedly descend from which is why the Irish epithet Ollathair fits well. So we're left with Lugh, Cernunnos and Sucellos all potentially being the same god along with all the associated gods to these names like Ogmios, Toutatis and Esus. Is this really so or are we missing so many pieces that we're covering too wide an area and some elements have changed over time but we think they've remained the same?
@@Catubrannos my advice to you is ignore things you dont and cant know. Who is Esus? Doesnt matter. The surviving sources present a coherent mythical interpretation without trying to drag up every name from every roman period inscription

Lugh is more similar to Varuna than Mitra imo. Varuna is the binder who enforced the laws laid down by Mitra. I think lugh has aspects of each of these deities but I’d say Nuada is closest to Mitra.
He has many similarities with Varuna, but probably more with Indra. There is no 1 to 1 equality but his roll is that of Indra not Varuna which is held by Nuada. What was prior to vedic tradition is pure speculation
The Celtic Sanctuary indeed, even within any given system gods and especially goddesses tend to bleed into one another. It should be noted that all three of these gods have been at one point the sovereign god or king of the gods. I think the vajra was like a symbol of authority and that is what lugh and even Odins spears represent.

@@Dice_rollerThere's certainly an argument to be made that they ARE the same god, with different names for each culture. Such as Mars/Ares being the same god in all real senses. The idea of the Celts and Norsemen having the same gods with different names makes tons of sense.
Thanks for the information. Also, i wonder if Lugus is your favorite god... Mine, in this case, would probably Bóinn. Also, the music you use in the background gives such a mystical feeling, i need the name XD
This gives me a profound new take on the Sky God, the High King, and the idea of Gods _Altogether._
Writing them off as "the sun" or "a river" is an apalling misrepresentatin.

Absolutely fantastic video. Very well done!
Well done! Loaded with information and expertly presented!

Can you comment on some of your source material? I'm looking for more reading material on Celtic and proto Celtic mythology
The other material is from other Indo-European religions and mythologies like those of the Norse, Greeks, Persians and Indians.

lugh sounds like he can be compared to Shu as he holds up the sky. Shu separated Nut and Geb in the ancient egyptian mythology. speaking as there are a few egyptian gods. such as Thoth, Ra, and Anubis (when he is weighing the souls of the dead.)

Really. I homeschooled mine. All graduated university. 😆😎🏁🔥
Huh. At 2:31 the profile with the hat, reminded me of Mesopotamian reliefs showing Enlil. He's shown in profile w a particular hat, much like this.
It’s a more modern interpretation. With the Dagda it’s not necessarily Newgrange but sources tell he has a harp that control the seasons
It's official, Messmer from the Elden Ring dlc is basically Lugh.
@Brennus of Gaul Yes Tyr and Taranis is Thor. Thor drove around in a chariot and one of Taranis' symbols is a wheel.
@@Catubrannos my advice to you is ignore things you dont and cant know. Who is Esus? Doesnt matter. The surviving sources present a coherent mythical interpretation without trying to drag up every name from every roman period inscription
Glass means shiny, but extension also river. So Glassford is river Ford, Douglas or dubglass is dark river, and gallowglass is shiny (warriors) from gallow (galloway)
lugh of the long arm-comet sky deity
...long arm = comet's tail!!!! U will like my book!!! Explains Balór,,, www.amazon.co.uk/DELUSIONS-IMPORTANCE-Confessions-Irish-Stone-ebook/dp/B077BX1DGN
Hi. I would like to know how are the efforts doing to build the sanctuary! For the moment I can't help monetarely, but would love to help elsehow.
Lugh is more similar to Varuna than Mitra imo. Varuna is the binder who enforced the laws laid down by Mitra. I think lugh has aspects of each of these deities but I’d say Nuada is closest to Mitra.
It might be, but there are many elements akin to Indra as well. Ultimately there is no such 1 to 1 equality
The Celtic Sanctuary in what way would you link nuada to Varuna?
Who is that God or so called figure that has a sun as a face and a human body
Pictish crescent and v rod on coin bottom right @ 24:30. 🍀
Thank you for your work
Phenomenal, thank you!
He seems very similar to both Odin and Freyr, like a cross between the two. Which is interesting, especially if he's the oldest of Celtic Gods.
Very informative. Thank you.
Hail Lugh. I pray to Him, that in Countries like Brazil He can is coming more easy, more softness. Here, specially in Rio de Janeiro is very every year. Is so hard hot And many people have suffered with so hard hot in Summer. And almost during all the year. But we know humans beings pollute our Planet. And in part is our fault. Sorry for my not good English. I hope your understand I wrote. Lugh and all the Gods and Goddesses bless you always.
I'm curious do you actually believe in the Celtic mythology or what you consider Celtic religion?
@@bacarrakris5432 I consider both! For me, Lugh is a deiity of the Sun. HE isn't the Sun. Reading about many mythologies we can learn about the Universe and about ourselves. But I believe, and trust HIM like an another Deities. For me The Gods and Goddess are Powerful Energies. I love search and read about Them, of course we don't understand and don't have such knowledge about Them and The Universe. Sincerily I hope that you understand my not good english. And I hope you can understand I said. Blessed be! ( I love so much The Celtic Religion).

The death of Balor and the following flooding has 2 Norse parallels I've noticed.
Ymir and Fenrir.
Upon their deaths, a flood is summoned to wash the Jotnar underneath the waves for the coming new world, each killed by Odin alongside his brothers or alongside his son, Víðarr.
I think Víðarr has unrecognized parallels with, not only Lugh, but Pushan.
The wide ruler whose home is a wide overgrown plain who likes to make and wear shoes
*insert George Lucas quote
Lugh of the Long, Sure and Deft Hand. My Patron.
Lugh, a very interesting Celtic deity. Christian Missionaries defamed him with the concept of Untruth, therefor our modern words LIE and LÜGE are based on him. LÜGE=German for LIE
Pls tell me of the relation between lu and "hu" nordic root later "hugh" ?

I wish you would publish this information. Like even just the transcripts of your videos in book for would be worth it.
Also why isn’t the battle of M.T. Translated into English completly yet?
Fantastic. Thanks a lot
#TH-cam it would be nice for channel creators to have an ability to Edit Closed Captioning of their own videos through this website's program. Not sure if at present, Nov 2022, they are allowed to change what the site auto-captions but it makes a world of difference. Especially when using other languages not exclusively modern English. (ie this creator spent years producing this content with Old English names and your website cannot even sound-spell it correctly.)
How is doing the sanctuary? Where are you guys?
Thank you sir 🥰
Hubris and ego are on point.
Yes, at some point I will redo this video and improve it in many ways. One will be to be a bit more humble, though I do not think I am guilty of hubris. Or do you speak of something else?
Good 👍
When Christianity came to Ireland it gradually belittled Lugh and turned him into the Leprechaun we know today
What? Really?
@@elizabethtangata326 Christianity had a practice of absorbing and discrediting former pagan deities along with adopting pagan festivals and equating them with christian ones, look up holy wells in Ireland and their origins as an example. Anyway, Lugh Lamhfada was the most powerful of the Irish pantheon, patron of the arts, crafts (including shoe making) and the Sun. Slowly but surely the idea of the all powerful Lugh Lamhfada was discredited and replaced by the fairy craftsman Lugh-chromain I.e. "Lugh crook back" or "stooping Lugh" who's nickname was eventually corrupted into Leprechaun, often depicted as a shoe maker. That's one theory anyway.
One could also say the trickster Sun god was twisted into Lucifer.
So Lugh is also Hermes/Mercury and Wotan/Odin.
No, they're different gods who have the same or similar roots.
