This was a very enjoyable and detailed documentary. I'd only want to add this little addition from my own home region: The Royal Navy blockaded the entire coast of Finland during the Crimean War. The Finnish population indulged in regular blockade running and conducted lively illegal trade with Sweden; trying to stem this behaviour, the British Navy regularly bombarded Finnish towns along the coast. At Kokkola, the British tried to land a detachment of troops, an invasion that was met by fierce resistance by Russian regular soliders in cooperation with Finnish locals repelling the invader. The defenders captured a British landing craft, which was then put proudly on display and was the only Royal Navy vessel in foreign ownership until World War One. It's still on display at Halkokari, Kokkola, Finland. The Brits have occasionally asked for the boat's return, always refused by the Finns lol

Wonderful series from a Russian perspective , I always knew we were not being taught the true historical facts on the Crimea in history class ayt school in Britain in the 60's. My Grandpa was a coal miner and avid communist used to tell me stories but I thought he was just exaggerating, turns out he was right all along. R.I.P Grandpa.

It's good to see another perspective on every historical event. Soviet Storm WWII was great documentary, Same goes for Romanov. This one is also good. On "west" side of the globe most people are still thought in schools that USA and UK liberated Europe in WWII which is of course false. There are few that actually know that Europe was liberated by Red Army and Soviet Union with their millions of casualties, while USA had 135576 dead soldiers in Europe war theater. In these kind of movies we are able to see other side of the coin that were hidden from us for years. The more people on "west" watch Russian side of truth the more they will be able to understand their actions (like integration of Crimea) and less likely we will watch documentary about WWIII.

I think the only reason the allies invaded Normandy in 1944 was because they were afraid that the Russians would not stop at Germany and take over the whole of Europe.

Could you give a reference to the English version of the Crimean War? Most likely, they talk only about "great victories" and underestimate "defeats", in principle, like others. But still it would be interesting to see.

Most UK history books sing the same tune as you described. I studied Advanced Level Pre- Uni History and now those text books ALL leave me feeling as if I had been filter fed only a slanted portion of what happened. Cant remember the name of the text book. It could have been written by T R Owen but not sure as I read it years ago

That has started after the 2014 crisis. For instance, 2011 Great Patriotic War (or the Soviet Storm as it is known in the west) was very well made and objective series.
Romanov, World War One and World War Zero series, all made post 2014 crisis are everything but objective with strong emphasis on myths, Orthodoxy and nationalism with very careful word choosing and selective reporting. I consider them great propaganda actually.
In Romanov series you can hardly see any criticism of the dynasty - everyone was great and beloved by his people. There were just some pesky rebels in late 19th century and foreign agents that managed (unexplained how) to turn the entire empire against the beloved emperor/s.
In World War One, everything was great. Every loss was described as tactical withdrawal, Russia entered the war because of poor Serbia avoiding to say the truth - Russia joined out of economic reasons - majority of its trade was going over Black Sea ports fueling its industrial growth so once again Bosporus was the reason. And everything was going well for the Empire until, out of the blue, some traitors revolted and beloved empire fell.
That series was particularly important in its message as that was the year of great crack down of all "unpatriotic NGOs" that were presented in Russian public as foreign agents and traitorous so a strong "We were going well against the enemy until someone betrayed us" message had to be sent.
And now, presenting a Crimean war as a World War Zero, just because it had three small naval battles outside of Crimea shows the subjectivity. If anything, World War Zero was waged at the beginning of 19th century (1803-1815) - the time of Napoleon, US-Britain war and many other around the globe. Crimean war does not even qualify. That scene in 3rd part with a sailor swimming to take an icon so that ship could sink - I facepalmed so hard. Many evocations of God, Russian righteousness in everything and "we were the first, we were the best" mentality makes me wanna puke - and I come from an Orthodox nation (and Orthodox family) that is strongly Russophilic and actually hates the guts of the west (you can deduce by my name where I am from). Yet even I cannot close my eyes to painful subjectivity and nationalism of the recent series.
But once again, the series comes as well timed propaganda tool, just like Mihalkov's "Sunstroke" a year and half before. With the Russian annexation of Crimea, Crimea themed series and movies are flooding the media. And when ever you make series for propaganda reasons, the historical accuracy suffers. Historical perspective is one thing, I am always for it, but not when you omit something and sugarcoat the rest.
But with excellent production value (the result being a lot of money being thrown at propaganda for the last two years) makes these series watchable and those less inclined for historical accuracy actually take these series as historical documentaries - a thing they most certainly are not. Imagine the outcry if Germans made a documentary series where they tried to picture themselves in WWI as good guys (oar at least as bad as everyone else) and WWII where they try to relativize their role in the war.
That is the same thing Russia does now. The last good thing that came out of there was The Great Patriotic War, in terms of historical accurate video format (documentaries, series, movies). And it was not only good, it was great! Shame for everything after that.

Make your own series if you're such a "professional historian" LOL!
_"With the Russian annexation of Crimea,"_
Gotcha! No actual russophile would say "annexation". Because every russophile knows that Crimea left through peaceful referendum and not a single shot was fired. Now fuck off!
