Hi everyone! I hope you like the new video. A note on one of the comments in the video: In the video I give the statistic that oil accounts for 40% of GDP and 80% of government revenue. Apparently this is too high, and the usual % of GDP is more like 10-18%, obviously depending on the price of oil. I'm looking into the source of the stat, but I suspect it's a very out-of-date number, and maybe the record highest % of GDP.

When you spoke of the old kingdoms, you omitted the Old Benin Empire. It it worthy of note that, the old Benin Empire was the last Kingdom in Nigeria to be defeated by the British. having a good old globe or using different projections is very useful to understand the geographical challenges over the world. I remember an old book presenting the Cold War with a polar projection, as a teenager it was mindblowing.
@@PainterVierax That’s pretty cool. It makes sense that the would use a polar projection for the Cold War since the two superpowers at the time were the United States of America and Soviet Union.
Nigeria is way bigger than shown on the maps as he said. It takes days to travel by road from the South to the North and hours by air.
It's so diverse too with so many different cultures, languages, way of life that moving from one part to the other is like being in a different country.
In a way, they are different 'countries' cos pre colonial times, today's Nigeria was made up of different kngdoms, empires and states that were lumped together by the British into one big country, hence the diversity and sometimes friction

Nigeria is an amazing country, and what I've seen of it the people are very enterprising. Maybe I'm wrong, but one of the main things which seems to hold the country back from success is government corruption. That's a shame, but I wonder what can be done to change that? Thanks for the video by the way, as usual with all of your videos, entertaining and informative!
Is now the 6th most populous country surpassing Brazil, and very soon will be the 5th one. Nigeria has a higher birth rate than the countries with more population than them, and Pakistan (the 5th now) has a mininal difference in population (they surpassed Brazil little time ago too). Nigeria is an universe inself.
I’ve seen projections that just Lagos could have a population of up to 100 million by 2100. I can’t quite comprehend that.
I don’t think it will get quite that big, but it will be multiples of what it is now.
@@GEOfocusChannel you are not far from the truth...Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria by landmass, very small indeed, but still the most populated...For over a decade now, some real estate buffs have been creating man made islands along our coastlines, to make more room for investments and contain population explosion. The only alternative is for other states, especially Ogun state, which is the neighboring state to Lagos, to develop fast and relieve Lagos from imploding from within...unless that is done, i foresee a serious issue ahead.

@@eduardocajias5626 yes, the very first successful man made island were Victoria Island, done during colonial era, the Banana Island, worth billions of dollars per a few square meter, owned by an indigenous Nigerian entrepreneur. We also have by far the biggest man made island, which is the now completed Eko Atlantic City, then the newly inaugurated Island, known as the Ocean city Lagos. All these are humongous and extremely valuable real estates, being created to provide more space for Lagos and her economic growth. Below are some links for your view:

Well, there are very few stock images available for Nigeria compared to most other countries, so I have very limited selection of images to choose from. I can't just use any image I find on the internet; I have to find stock images and properly license them. I always do the best I can, and I did in this video.

@@dvchel Well, you can, but someone might sue you, and it could be a big licensing company that sues you. Sometimes people might be happy if you use their image and give them credit (for example an image of their shop or product, because they get some free promotion), but it's a risk (unless you get their permission).

Minor thing on the borders corresponding: The actual first time this occurred was 1 June 1961. After WW1 Cameroon was ruled under a League of Nations mandate under which France controlled most of modern day Cameroon and Britain controlled a thin strip of land to the Northwest which they administered as "Northern Cameroons" and "Southern Cameroons". In 1 January 1960, French Cameroon got its independence. Nigeria acquired its independence in 1 October 1960 and a plebiscite was held on 11 February 1961 to determine the fate of the Cameroons. The north voted to join Nigeria and was annexed on 1 June, and the south voted to join Cameroon and was annexed on 1 October.
I also wasn't aware of this for a long time because it looks roughly the same shape on older maps, but a key difference is that before WW1 Nigeria was "thinner" and its border with Kamerun was a straight line for the most part, whereas modern Nigeria's boundary is more natural.

Before the video, I know that Nigeria have many ethnical groups, like Igbo and Yoruba (in Brazil, my motherland, Yoruba was a important ethnical group cause the slavery period). I still wanna to travel to Lagos or Abuja someday. Travel to your neighboor countries as well (Ghana, Togo, Benin, Senegal) to see what´s like.
I love Nigeria and its people. Their music is fantastic and many of the films can be really funny and entertaining. Please, do a programme on the Igbo language, it's very musical, as it's a tonal language.

what i know about nigeria are
(1) Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe....in 1977, this book was one of the my form 4 english literature class (i am from sarawak, malaysia)
(2) akeem olajuwon is Yoruba and is from nigeria
I am also a fan of Hakeem Olajuwon. He inspired me

In Peru the film industry/celebrity world is called "Chollywood" From "Cholo" and "Hollywood". "Cholo" being a word that tbh deserves its own video as has widely different meanings across Latin America and in peru in particular can be used as derogatory term but also one of affection. Can be used with Pride but also with shame.
Interesting. In the US, "cholo" refers to Mexican gang members.

BUT can also be used with pride or as a term of endearment/nickname so its very context dependent, there is a whole documentary on the word in TH-cam

Mr Paul,you did a nice job here as always. As a Nigerian, I can testify that Nigeria is naturally blessed--productive land, good weather conditions, almost no natural disasters. Our major problem in Nigeria is bad government,very corrupt politicians who doesn't consider the grassroots, that's why the Igbos are relentlessly fighting for separation
I won't comment on the fighting for separation, but I do hear a lot about severe corruption in Nigeria.

Excellent video but devastated by the lack of concern for the environment especially the Niger delta. This had the only unique type of ecology of its kind in the world with its mangrove vegetation large numbers of hippopotamuses, rhinos, leopards, crocodiles, gorillas, chimps, monkeys and forest elephants, unique birds, and butterflies that were studied here for centuries. The international oil companies drove those animals into extinction by destroying their natural habitats and polluting the rivers and creeks.. the peoples lives of fishing and faring but alas there’s nothing left to fish and the farmlands have been destroyed or taking over for oil exploration to fuel the cars and factories of the West.
I think that might be a topic for separate dedicated video at some point. Country profiles like this are quite general and condensed, so every section is thin on details.
In India there are more than 400 spoken languages of which 20 languages are scheduled languages and Hindi and English are the official languages.

Poorly researched video of Nigeria in 2022. It is unbelievable to say that Oil contributes 40% of gdp when it actually contributes less than 10%. It is incorrect that Lagos city is 8million in population.
The oil stat is already corrected in the pinned comment, with a stat that covers a range of years.
8 million is the population of Lagos city proper, not the metro area. Some sources give the metro population without clearly specifying that.
Some sources say 9 million, etc. The population statistics are ALL estimates.

Is there a specific order you are doing this in? Or just the ones you want to do?
I made the list of topics and decided the order based on what I want to do, but with a balance of different continents and regions, and with a balance between topics with more potential popularity and those with less. I'm hoping that keeps as many people engaged as possible. If I focus on a specific region for several videos in a row, people might stop watching when that series is over. And if I do all the big topics first, people will stop watching when I get to the smaller topics. And if I do them in alphabetical order, I'll be doing what another channel is already known for.
Great Video with Facts. However I would have loved better pictures of the country. Most of the pictures used do not represent the actual beauty of some of the areas stated.
Unfortunately the selection of stock images from Nigeria is very limited. There aren’t many photographers taking professional photos in Nigeria and selling licenses for them through stock image services. I wish I had a much bigger selection to choose from.

Nice video. I would like to ask: Which language is most spoken in the capital city of Abuja and in the other main city of Lagos?
Mostly English because they are both large cities and English is needed for inter-ethnic communication
In Lagos the most widely spoken national language is Yoruba, if I understand correctly. But because people move there from all over the country, lots of languages are spoken, and the lingua franca is normally Nigerian Pidgin English.
Abuja is even more mixed, since it’s a recently built planned city, so almost its whole population came there from somewhere else. Like in Lagos, the most common language of the streets is Nigerian Pidgin English.
My knowledge is second-hand, though. If any Nigerians want to comment or clarify, go ahead! 🙂

I'm a fan of both langfocus and geofocus so thanks again for this educational content. Best wishes and hope you keep it up 👍
I hope to do them, but I’m not sure when it will be. Langfocus videos are huge projects and I have to struggle to get them done in a reasonable amount of time, which means I end up pushing back the topics that are harder to research. It can be quite hard to find sufficient materials for languages of Africa, and it’s hard to find people who are willing to help with the recordings and have good enough recording equipment.

I agree that the Benin kingdom was a great kingdom but the nri kingdom had it's great moments too and it's said to be the oldest kingdom in Nigeria Dating back 900AD

I'm actually from Nigeria, most people think that we are a poor country, but thats not actually true, we have the largest economy in Africa, and the 27th largest in the world, we are also the technological hub of Africa, most of the problems if not all, are actually mainly in the Northern regions where the population are relatively poor compared to the people in the south

Being the 27th largest in the world does not mean a lot really. Nigeria has one of the lowest income per capital and has a high inequality rate. I live in Nigeria my whole life and I can tell you that things are getting worse lately.
