Yeah that is amazing. Some players adapted this into their own playing. Ynqwie malmsteen for example. Richie was his inspiration through his entire guitar progress.
Blackmore has a touch that is immediately recognizable. Many have tried to imitate him, but he remains inimitable because in addition to the touch there 's soul.
If you close your eyes and just listen to if you want a hundred guitar players, you can and of course you will know when RITCHIE BLACKMORE is playing. God of the Strat. No one can give a Strat that tone......JUST RITCHIE BLACKMORE !!!!! MY HERO in the past, the present and in the future.... LONG LIVE RITCHIE...
+Riccardo Colman Guitarists of that era (Pagey as well) didn't grow up listening to just one style, so they have more depth to draw from. Listen to these guys, then one of the later generation like Hammett and, good though they are, the depth just isn't there.
Hi Michael You were really lucky :) Excuse me if i'm bothering you right now, but do you remember the year and the venue of those two concerts? Thanks a lot :)
I saw them in 1987 House of Blue Light tour in the Birmingham NEC with Bad Company supporting. I saw them a couple of times (Birmingham and London, Brixton Academy, on the Battle Rages On tour. I only saw Rainbow once - on the last tour with Dougie White, again in London but at the Hammersmith Apollo - Ritchie gave me a beer that night, and I still have the cup!
He’s underaged from the aspect that he isn’t as well known. Deep purple isn’t as popular as zeppelin, or Hendrix, or Clapton. But Blackmore is every bit as much a player as page and Hendrix and Clapton. He stacks up! A monster!
As Brian May of Queen said around 20 years ago - “No one talks about Ritchie and I don’t know why” Eddie Van Halen never credited Ritchie as an influence yet he played Purple songs in cover bands in the mid 70’s. Eddie said his main influence was Eric (Old slow hand) Clapton. That doesn’t ring true. The first guitarist I thought of when I heard Eddie was Ritchie. They share .. speed, precision, great tone and dynamics and are great showman. If the most high profile guitar wizard of the 80’s blanks you, the next generation aren’t going to know why you are so great. Ritchie is head and shoulders above any hard rock guitarist of his generation IMHO.
Now that is one bad ass guitar player. I've seen players copying Ritchie, but none express this beautiful essence that expression he has. And I would not expect anyone to. He is one of a kind. peace&beatles
He helped create metal with Deep Purple, then invented the subgenres of prog metal and neoclassical with Rainbow (which also introduced Ronnie James Dio to the metal world), and now he plays renaissance music with a hint of rock. Is there anything Blackmore can’t play? He really is a god.
Rykehuss Black Sabbath wasn’t the only band that helped create metal at that time. You could argue that with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin helped write the blueprint for metal.
Deep Purple In Rock came out before Black Sabbath debut album. Check out hard loving man it's on the album In Rock first heavy metal song really. Whole album is much more aggressive than Sabbath's whole career and trust me I love black sabbath but fast and aggressive music rubs me better so to speak
88 HH Deep Purple In Rock influenced future pioneer heavy metal, Judas Priest especially. But they didnt create it, the sound is hard rock. Black Sabbath s/t was the first metal album, and the first doom metal album. Whether its aggressive or not is meaningless. Just different genres.
Everyone must be hearing the backing track to think it sounds like Santana. Solo sounds 100% like Ritchie Blackmore to me.Uses some of his signature descending runs and his unmistakable vibrato and tone. This isn't his recording project. It's for an album Pat Boone did, called, "In a Metal Mood".Kind of looks like Ritchie had this,"let's get this over" look, but still delivers a pure class solo.
No one else can come up with more musically superb phrasing than Blackmore. Yngwie, Vai, Satriani etc. can play more notes than Blackmore, but a single note played by Blackmore tells more story than a million notes played by a shredder.
i love his music. i got introduced to him when someone told me i was related to a Rockstar. i asked him what he meant and he made me look up deep purple then i found Ritchie Blackmore. my last name is Blackmore
This is something the shredders will never understand . I saw him on the strait between the eyes tour. I miss guitars players with a feel for the instrument . Guitar playing now is more like a magic trick .
And this is an example of why he was and is the best!!! On a separate note I can imagine how brilliant a Blackmore/Santana collaboration would be for the people who enjoy tasty, soulful and emotional guitar playing!!!
ONLY Ritchie Blackmore could play the Solo and bring legitimacy to a Pat Boone "LIZARD LOUNGE" version of Smoke On The Water. Unlike Eric "Clapton is GOD", NOBODY has to be told Ritchie Blackmore is a Guitar GOD because EVERYONE knows it already!

Yes, Ritchie is definetly one of the best rock guitar player. It does not matter not included in top 3,5 guitar player also. He play beutiful prase without garbage note to shred. and also show tension with fast & narrow vibrato and unique tone.

What a sweet tone and melodic solo from a true guitar god. On his day Blackmore can wipe the floor with any guitarist with the possible exception of the freakish Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck.
Depois que blackmore saiu do deep purple pra mim a banda acabou , stive morse é um grande guitarrista mais a lacuna que blackmore deixou nunca foi preenchida.
So simple but a major point you've made bro, though i'm still in love with his music and being studying it deeply almost 18 years, along with many different styles and players obviously, but always come back to Ritchie due to his nuanced fret work wich squeezes the same old notes everyone has but with a flavor only of his, wich shows how much of a gifted player he is. I ve covered 10 years ago at home rising album note for note, but smoke on the water without his hands it's like child playing, yes, it's an easy tune to learn and stuff, but extremely hard to convey if you're not familiarized with the nuances that make this famous chops such a legend we ve all being spawned after. Thats the ghost of Blackmore wich separates wannabes from quality players, pro players from legends, fairly proficient players from geniuses, it's a gift, bet even Steve howe, a very versatile bloke on his own right, can't make an enjoyable legendary version of this tune either, Steve morse fail on that, and morse is an extremely gifted player for christ sake. Like u said, it's definetely Ritchie s tune. A tune thats hard to make yours no matter how good you're at guitar, a tune everyone s having a hard time to do it justice. A curse only his music has, and quite a rare feat since his music isnt the most difficult to perform.
How is it that this guy is left out so often in "greatest ever" debates?! Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Slash... that's all I ever hear. I realize there are different styles, but come on, Blackmore is amazing!! In my opinion... he's the best!
I saw a couple of the lockdown videos Blackmore and his missus did , I was amazed to see Richie playing left handed just as well as he can right, he really is a master of the instrument.
He wasn’t playing left handed in those vids. Candice was using selfie mode during the livestream which caused a mirror image effect (right is left/left is right).
Ritchie is the Father of Neoclasiccal trade. He is the first adopt from classic to rock. Next time you know the name neoclasical metal and yngwie much touch it.
The main theme sounds a bit latino style and therefore his solo sounds like Santana , but generally he played it in his own style ! All the licks and bends were as always as he does! Great Ritchie !
9 changes of pickup position settings in the course of one solo is a very Ritchie thing to do
I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. Wow.
He changes mid-note, and back again. XD And he manages to have it make tonal sense.
Yeah that is amazing. Some players adapted this into their own playing. Ynqwie malmsteen for example. Richie was his inspiration through his entire guitar progress.
It’s all for show
And its crazy because his strats only have 3-position switchs.

I was lucky enough to see the classic MkII Purple a couple of times - Blackmore and Lord together were amazing.
