Another Pro of Truckee - there are so many more lakes off the beaten path. Check out the free kayaks at Independence, Webber is another nice lake. And miles and miles of off roading….list goes on.- great videos!
I relocated to Truckee in late September 2020. Everything you said here is spot on. I’m a practicing attorney with a pretty good income and I find the housing situation here ridiculous. It’s nowhere near as expensive as SF (where I lived before) but just finding something to rent was a real challenge, never seeking something I’d like to buy. I also learned within days of coming here to buy all gas, groceries, necessaries, etc. in Reno. The gas alone is typically $1.25-$1.50 less per gallon. Groceries and other necessaries are normally 15-35% less in Nevada than in California, too. The tourists are the one really big downer to living here, in my opinion. Unlike the tourists I saw in SF and NYC, tourists who come to Truckee often display a certain unjustified arrogance and entitlement. This is just a playground for them and it shows in the way they treat locals. This is one reason, though not the most important one, why locals charge so much more than elsewhere for restaurant food, drinks, gas, skiing and sporting equipment, etc. Once you figure out the work arounds, this is a GREAT place to live.
exactly, I only ended up living there for 6 months, i moved back to south lake tahoe, i found Truckee to be beautiful but a little to sleepy for me. But, if I was an awesome skier, truckee would be paradise!
Thanks for the enlightening update on living in Truckee @GabrielleViola. I've been going to Truckee for years as a get away from the SF Bay Area and I absolutely love it there. As a part time resident in Truckee, I find that everything you mentioned in your informative video is true. Good job! ☮️🌲☮️
great job! its nice you mentioned its proximity to lake tahoe, because tourists from the bay always seem to think Truckee IS lake tahoe, and really its not anywhere near the lake. I think if you count second home owners and not real locals , there are actually more locals in south shore, and Truckee is more touristy to me, as everyone I know from the bay area goes to Truckee on highway 80 vs the south shore, but all of lake tahoe is super touristy for sure. thanks! great videos! glad things are working out for you.
Hello, great video! I stumbled on it. I have lived in Truckee a long time. The “abandoned “ buildings have different fates. Some are historical landmarks that have deteriorated over the decades in our harsh environment. They will be rehabbed at some point, but finding the ‘right’ person to take that on takes time as it’s a huge and expensive responsibility. There are some small cabins, sadly, that are destined to be demolished. The land they are on will be used for other purposes. Many old cabins are just not good candidates for rehabilitation. It may be in the town plan to allocate the use to other purposes.
thank you for the explanation! I noticed a lot of deteriorated buildings near the hilltop restaurant and along river street which seems like the heart of Truckee..
I'm considering moving to South Lake Tahoe this summer, what are the pros and cons of Truckee vs SLT out of curiosity if you have time. I have a family of four, a 13 and 15 year old, if that makes a difference and I will have the Epic pass for skiing. Great video! And why did you decide to move?
loved the video! what is your favorite town in the region so far? Im going to be a remote mental health therapist and was looking for the best one. thanks!
Hey ! Have you been to Bar Of America in the old bank building especially on Weekends when they have entertainment? Ben awhile ! I was in a car accident and just getting back in the swing of things. How is the family?
Great video, but it would be even better if you disclose some numbers such as rent, gas, avarage grocery check etc. compared to Reno for example. What is your advice, as a permanent resident, where is the better place to live, NV or CA side of the Tahoe? I think it could be the topic for another video. Best wishes!
The boarded up "abandoned" dwellings you filmed have historical designations. The Town of Truckee already has a difficult permitting process for any changes of use or remodel, but historical designations are even more complicated. I never say never, but many people have tried and many people have failed. I tip my hat to anyone who does the homework and succeeds.
Being a native newyorker, I love the natural beauty of the area. If Truckee was in NV , I would live there myself. Alas, it is California. I'm never living under the communist again.
I'm just glad Reno is in Nevada since it is close to the border. Truckee is a 30-45 minute drive away. Hopefully some day I can move back to the Reno area.
@1ouncebird Communism means an oppressed working class, as demonstrated by the C.C.P. Communism means starvation and brutality, as demonstrated by North Korea and Cuba. It means the working class and oppressed minority people are unable to resist corruption. It means parents have their children taken by the state. It means gulags and concentration camps. It also means endless infighting. The Stalinist kills the Trotskyist who kills the Sandinistas who kills the Marxist who kills the Socialist. However, they all collaborate with the Capitalist to kill the anarchist.
Bring bucket loads of money. Our son sold his house on Donner Lake and moved his young family to Reno, NV. He said it was like getting a 15% to 20% raise after years in CA.

Out of the locations you’ve lived so far in that area , is one more affordable than the other ?
I would say carson city and reno are more afforable, and Truckee is the most expensive for sure ..south lake in the middle
The harsh winters is a Pro! Everything else was on point.
The good definitely outweighs the bad on Truckee, although it depends on the person. Thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you for watching!
Nice to hear and see. I think overall you are fortunate to be there. Seems like a marketing job suits you.

I’ll be retiring out in Truckee, thanks.

Thank you!!...I actually moved back to South Lake since making this video 😃
Nice voice and wonderful video. Truckee is very pretty. Definitely be my plan B as world conditions deteriorate.

Id like to know about those boarded up homes too. ..Who pays property taxes boarded up houses?
most likely just foreclosed homes or vacation homes that rich people forgot about

Some of the high pricing apart from housing is driven by proximity to Marta’s Camp.
that makes sense for sure and all those other neighborhoods like schaffers mill etc
loved the video! what is your favorite town in the region so far? Im going to be a remote mental health therapist and was looking for the best one. thanks!
I think I enjoyed living in South Lake Tahoe the most if I had to chose, your right there in Lake Tahoe and theres a good amount to do

Maybe they're boarded up for seasonal use

How long have you lived there now? And how much longer do you think you'll stay? Finally, where to next? Thanks.
In Truckee for about 6 months, and idk, ive been very curious about Washington its so beautiful there!

What is your favorite activity there?
I love catching the inversions on Donner Lake in the morning or driving up to Donner Lake Overlook..it so pretty

Ah. Yet another person who doesn't know what the word communism means.
@1ouncebird
You worship the Marxist dialectic, realistic conversations are impossible with cultists like you.
Have a nice day, comrade.
