    Hi, I love your plasma cutter.
    I have built a MPCNC, with RAMPS 1.4 and Marlin firmware.
    I wanted to ask you, what programming do you use to make it do the down and then up motion before it starts cutting.
    I have used this one:
    M106
    g4 s0.7
    M107
    but I have not been successful :(

    What's the thickest steel you've cut and at what speed? You should do more videos of the cutter. Nice work.

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've cut 1/8" with it at 25ipm. The limit is in the HF plasma cutter. The specs say it should cut 3/16" but I haven't tried it yet. The machine will go much faster than what the HF cutter can cut. Would be nice to get a Hypertherm some day but the cost is too much right now.

    So how did you implement the floating axis? I just build a table myself, with a floating Z-axis for the IHS. But I haven't the foggiest idea on how to tell cnc to sense the height before each cut. Hope you could help me with that. (The "probe-in" signal is connected and responding in the hal meter)

    Thank you for the videos. I quite enjoyed your build. I do have one question though. I'm looking into building my own amd I have found that there are plasma cutters listed as CNC compatible, yet they don't say what makes them CNC compatible. Do you know what makes a plasma cutter CNC compatible and how to tell if a plasma cutter is CNC compatible? From what I have researched, you can fry your electronics if it's not.

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really sure.

    • @MOUNIROU60
      @MOUNIROU60 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's late, but the answer is that the CNC compatible ones don't have high-frequency arc start, which could interfere with the electronics. they use another technique called blowback start

    • @kd6507
      @kd6507 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Off the top of my head you might be able to implement it in the gcode. Before each pierce home z with G28 Z, then rezero z with a known offset like G92 Z##.###

    Nice build. How do you determine the end heigt vs. the microswitch hight?(how does it know the hight after it backs off? ) I See that you have less "waste" travel on this build

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a switch height setting in configuration I downloaded from the Proma web site.

    • @DKadventurer
      @DKadventurer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read the whole page.. it is still unclear to me how the floating height is set? Have you measured the height from torch nearly touching and to activation of the switch and put this dimension into the macro or code. Or is it more some sort of probe/contact between torch and material, and then the switch is only to tell that it is detecting?

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you load the .ini and .hal files in the Proma download into LinuxCNC it will create a bunch of new fields on the right side of the screen. One of those fields is called switch height.

      Mine have not meted. They have actually held up quite well. The heat stays at the torch tip, not up where the clamps are located. If something ever did happen to them, I can always just 3D print replacements.

  • @chopperg2142
    @chopperg2142 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    so is this floating axis taking the place of the THC?

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. It touches off before each cut. The reason for this is that the metal can bend from the heat which will cause the Z-axis zero point to change as the cuts are made. This will ensure that each cut starts at the same height. The THC will change the height of the torch as it moves across the metal to keep the torch the same distance from the metal while it is moving.

    How accurate are the holes made by the plasma cutter?
    Or are you better off making a separate CNC drill to run along the back side of the gantry for drilling starter holes and or larger holes? I guess then that the problem becomes one of rigidity within the system. Any thoughts on the matter, anyone?

    • @MakingStuff
