    I’m Canadian and as a kid we would always have a Sierra when my dad took me to see my grandma in Manchester. Fond memories of taking them on spirited drives into wales and I love Sierra’s to this day.

    The Sierra had significantly different underpinnings from the Cortina in one important respect. It had independant rear suspension. I still love the Mk2 Cortina. But I love Sierras. I had a 1993 Sierra 2.0 GL auto, bought at 3 years old. One of the best cars I have ever owned.

      I love Sierra's too. I had a 1992 Sierra Sapphire GLS nearly 20 years ago. I loved it, I was 23 and had a 2.0 with a Cosworth spoiler, (secretly all GLS's had the Cosworth spoiler) I couldn't afford the insurance of a real Cossie.

    When I was five years old in 1978, my parents decided to move us as a family back to the U.K. Dad had just left the merchant navy. He got a job as an engineer for an insurance company and had a couple of Cortina’s as company cars. Then, in October 82 I went to school aged nine excited as I knew that when I got home dad was getting a new company car that day. When I got home there was no new Cortina on the driveway. There was a new spaceship as far as I could tell. A shiny new Sierra 1.6 GL. One of the earliest. It was so unusual, kids from my school started to walk down our street to just see it.
    Obviously the novelty wore off as they became more common. Dad had a Cavalier next but then in 87 got a Sapphire 1.8 LX.
    I loved the Sierra. I loved the Cavalier too and in general all cars from that era. Part of my youth. The Mondeo was superb too, dad had a couple and bought his last company car off the company when he retired.
    As Mondeo production has now ended forever in Europe, (they’re launching one for China only), I for one will always mourn the passing of the Sierra, the Cortina, the Cavalier and the Mondeo. RIP family Fords.

    Sierra really was turned into an excellent product by the mid 80's, had a 84 and 89 both absolutely fantastic and remembered fondly, 89 Diesel was still going 11 years on with 175k on the clock.

    The mk1 cortina was the first production car to have an ‘air flow’ style cabin. Air came in through the front and exited the cabin through the C pillars. So they were ground breaking. They were ‘ground breaking’.

    My older brother had a modified Mk2 1600E Cortina in the early 80's in metallic purple. It had a jacked up rear end, and slightly bigger rear wheels, and a boot spoiler. He loved that thing! He did end up selling it though, to a neighbour, and not long after that, some a-hole set fire to it outside a pub. I was just a young boy at the time, so was yet to own my first car, which was a Mini City, 850, around 1992 when I was 20.
    In later years, I bought a Sierra Saphire 2.0i Ghia, and I loved it for a few years. It was just the epitome if comfort for me back then. Happy memories 🙄

    My first car after passing my test back in 1975 was a Mk2 Cortina, followed by two further Mk2 Cortinas. A brand new Mk4 Cortina Estate in deep metallic Apollo Green with a black vinyl roof. Then a Sierra Estate in Crystal Green metallic followed by a Sierra XR4i. Happy days!

      The XR4i was the car I always secretly coveted, but never got to own. The closest I got was a 1:23 scale model in white, which I kept in its box for years. I just loved that three door styling with the double whale tail spoiler, they looked awesome back then. 👍

    I remember my father being unsure about having electric windows and central locking in his later Montego and complaining when they did go wrong and he had to reach round the open car door to get parking tickets. He would still rather have manual windows even today in his current Freelander 2. That window comment is my father to a tee 🙂.

    Yeah, funny how your boyhood memories colours your judgement. The Cortina was a little before my time, but my older siblings waxed lyrical about it. I remember the Sierra though, and despite its shortcomings would still be a decent daily (the Cortina is more of a Sunday car now?).
    I'm going to risk a tidal wave of abuse from angry Cortina fans, but I would take the Sierra😯.

    • @hermanmunster3358

      As a daily, the Sierra would be the more sensible choice. Even a Mk5 Cortina should be allowed to retire gracefully, like the Concorde, or Intercity 125.

My friend recorded us driving down the motorway with him standing outside the sunroof. He used to play it at his discos. I still have a copy now transferred to dvd. I later had an f reg singlecam sierra did 150k before i sold it. Really was a fast car, totally reliable. New Fords do nothing for me.

    I knew someone who went into a showroom to discuss the Sierra, then quite new. "I can see the plus points," he said to the salesman, but....it's so HIDEOUS! How did a company that made Cortina after Cortina, each better looking than the one before, come up with this monstrosity?" The salesman said, "ah, but when you're in it, you won't see what it looks like!" An American car salesman of the fifties would have a heart attack hearing such words.

    I wouldn’t call the Sierra a re-bodied Cortina by any means; the only things they shared were the engines and gearboxes (a bit like calling a Focus a re-bodied Escort). The suspension was totally different, the Sierra getting independent rear suspension similar to the Granada’s (and totally up to date), and a front Macpherson strut setup, a big improvement in handling over the mk5 Cortina’s wishbones.

  • @berwhaletheavenger
    @berwhaletheavenger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Sierra was anything but a rebodied Cortina - it had McPherson strut front suspension and a very good IRS so it handled well and rode superbly. The Cortina 3/4/5 used a very heavy double wishbone front end and a live rear axle. Very live in fact as it was so badly located. The Mark II was probably the best and Ford should have kept it going until 1972.

    Interesting that at launch and for a number of years later, none of the Cavalier, Sierra or Montego had all three body styles available.
    Montego never had a hatch; I wonder how many more sales it would have gained if it had.

    • @hermanmunster3358
      @hermanmunster3358 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know the Mk1 Cavalier came as either a 2 door or 4 door saloon and coupe. Then the Estate came with the Mk2, at which point they dropped the coupe from the Vauxhall line up. But Opel kept the coupe going for a few years as the Opel Manta.
      The Sierra Mk1 Estate came a couple of years after the initial launch I believe, and the Saloon came with the Mk2.
      But the Montego was only ever available, as you rightly said, in saloon or Estate versions. They had the Maestro which was based on the same platform as the Montego, so I guess you could say that the Maestro was the closest thing to a Montego hatchback. This was at a time when BL were trying to rationalise their model line up in an attempt to cut costs, so I guess it made sense not to have too many models, from their perspective at least. The Montego never came as a van neither I believe, but the Maestro did.

    That Blue Mink Mk2 is a very pretty car BUT those ridiculous wheels! Why on earth would you put them on it? I sold Sierra Azura’s new - a base model in silver or blue with GT alloys and a spoiler, some had really odd specs as Ford used up Sierra parts in the run out, Some had CVH engines but others had Pintos etc they were popular, but the Mondeo was a huge leap forward at the time.

    The rosiest of rose tinted spectacles there. The Sierra is undoubtedly the better car. Handles better, performs better, more comfortable, more refined and far better built. As a 90s vs 60s car should be. Thing is in this late model guise the Sierra isn’t miles away from some cars you could buy today in terms of appearance, ergonomics and general feel.
