Great to see these fabulous video-recordings appear this year. I was rivetted by the clarity of his Bach immediately on hearing him incidentally at a friend's house many years ago. I have the sonatas and partitas which I think nearly netted him a grammy. He has a deep spiritual association with the music. Note the fanned frets and sloped bridge on the Brahms guitar he and a friend invented. Reminds me I must get the lute suites. He seems to have travelled a great deal but if you do bury yourself in Brazil you won't be quite as well known!
I saw Paul Galbraith last night at Bennett Gordon Hall. There were about 6 empty front row seats. The average age of the attendees was about 75. Not much respect for a guy who completely re-invented the guitar (at the same level as Allan Holdsworth). U could tell by the stupid questions at the meet and greet that nobody knew who he was. It was truly sad, he played quite well (mind blowing) , the guitar sounded so warm, much better than in this video. No young people were there at all.
Yeah for $10 it was awesome, I would of preferred some more modern tunes, maybe next time. Bach: Allemande from Lute Suite in E minor Mozart: Allemande from Piano Suite in C major Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 17 in B-flat major Bach: French Suite No. 2 in C minor Scriabin: Four Preludes Albéniz: Mallorca (Barcarola) Albéniz: Sevilla (Sevillanas) Albéniz: Torre Bermeja (Serenata) I like his impressionistic CD the best Debussy, Ravel, etc...
Nobody knows who he is, the tickets sold out but place was pretty empty. I had front row seat and on my left side there 6-7 empty seats, I think the elderly are locals who got in for some discount price. Paul came out later and talked with people he seemed rather patient with every one. I've wanted to see him play for some time, just a bit shocked by it.
It’s a special gift to be able to play an instrument in such a manner as to move the listener emotionally…you certainly have it Paul. An Edinburgh lad too like myself! 👍
Such good Mozart. I don’t miss the piano at all. Finally the music can be touched by the player, by the heart. Just fabulous. A great thinking teacher and composer, Shlomo Carlebach, once said that the way you know that it’s good is when people don’t like it at first. 🌱🍀☘️🌻
SonicArchives I am 72, does that make me an idiot too. I have always admired Paul Galbraith. He is a true virtuoso. It would have been a huge honour to have been at his recital and I wouldn't have asked him silly questions. Age has nothing to do with music appreciation. Maybe his manager did not do a good enough job advertising his performance. Possibly that is why he didn't attract a younger audience.
Actually you can get a lot closer; fortunatelly, it's not the case, as one of the distinctive qualities of the guitar is the richness of its tone spectrum...
It's such a pity this instrument and player did not exist in Mozart's time: this is one of the most convincing solo performances of his music I have ever heard.
@superdeluxesmell Paul, so why do you play your guitar like this? Mr Galbraith: well, as a child, when I didn't practiced I always played when I was on my way in the school bus... and in the lessons.. and later at dinner🙃
It's called a Brahms guitar. It has 8 strings, an extra bass tuned to an A and an extra treble tuned to an A, usually. Also, there is a rod at the bottom like a cello as explained above.
This is lovely! Except for the intrusive and annoying advertisement that barges in at about 10 minutes. Totally ruining the flow of the graceful music.
@@raphaelreichmannrolim25 i read it just few minutes ago :-) Thanks. I also read that they (liuther, Gabraith) specially made this guitar for Brahms's compositions.

Most classical guitarists don't. Most hold the guitar so the neck is around a 45 to 60 degree angle with the help of a footstool or guitar support. Galbraith here is holding it almost vertically, the way a cellist would. That's apparently the most comfortable position for him, and obviously it works well. I don't think I could get used to that, personally.
that transient breathing sound destroys the recording. I can't figure out what the fuck that noise is, but it's not synced with the music and it throws off the whole atmosphere.
He's a guitarist sublimely playing a guitar, hybrid or not. Just enjoy the glorious music played by a master. And, frankly, I'd be surprised if anyone cared what you think about the instrument.
I'm in heaven when I hear Paul.
Thanks
Paul remains a true light in the plucked World. Well done!
Mozart would be so delighted to hear this !

how come so cheap a guitar recital concert charged by Paul Galbraith's organiser? Ridiculous ticket price $10 for a 1-2 hour concert.
very sad scene to hear that most attendees were elderly audiences for Paul Galbraith. WHat happened to the concert organiser or promoter?

Outstanding! ... Thank you.
Tear drawing playing. What an angelic human being and playing.
Mmmm....that ad was so well placed .....sublime
Incrível como Paul Galbraith extrai do violão tanta emoção. Uma peça linda numa transcrição impecável e execução ímpar.

Absolutely beautiful
A great artist and guitarist.
Sublime .... Bravo
His Bach playing is the best in the world. I think I heard one miss fingering on a recording and it was a beautiful artificial harmonic. Perfection.
Brilliant - musically so far beyond the average guitar virtuoso. And why don't we see this type of guitar everywhere - also a superior idea.
This is 6 years late, but I hope you've discovered Tim Henson and Polyphia by now. You'll enjoy it if you like this.
A guitar friend introduced me to your page, just yesterday and I'm so glad they did!
Welcome aboard!

very beautiful exceptional interpretation.
Could you please answer me where you get your high a string from . What kind of string is it?

I am 61 so not far behind you, my point was front row was mostly empty, Paul seemed like patient guy and didn't seem to mind.
This should be in Bestival!
Stunning
That is stunning!
Genial !!!
Heavenly.
Superb musician. How is the guitar supported, in " cello position " ?
Look carefully at the beginning.
Vertical. This is how Shawn Lane used to hold the guitar before the shred was unleashed upon the earth.
Brahms guitar
fantastico
A unique talent.
Divine!! Can you get any closer to a fortepiano tone on a guitar?
You can if you substitute the guitar with a fortepiano :P
Yes, dump a pianoforte onto a guitar, and there you have the tone.
Actually you can get a lot closer; fortunatelly, it's not the case, as one of the distinctive qualities of the guitar is the richness of its tone spectrum...

INTERESANTE TÉCNICA MUY SIMILAR AL VIOLONCELLO, FASCINANTE!!

Just a giant
Galbraith is Godlike on the guitar
Alguém sabe dizer qual a afinação e cordas que ele usa?
Wow!
Everyone: May we please see one shot that shows his whole setup and how he holds the guitar?
Camera person: Haha, no fuck you
haha Sorry about that, David! When the opportunity comes to record Paul again, we'll make sure to have takes showing it!
Eight string guitar is an essentially different instrument from the six string. Held differently and played vertically.
That's Paul Gabraith's way of doing it, essencially; in itself, the eight, or any other guitar, can normally be played in the usual positions.
@@raphaelreichmannrolim25 Not only Gabraith play this guitar this way: i think it's a Brahms Guitar
@@nicodanger13 You are totally correct, but, in case you don't know, Gabraith was one of it's inventors. I don't know why Brahms' name is in there.

When a cellist picks up the guitar
i wonder if being blind is an advantage for him musically
Why do classical guitarists hold the guitar that way?
Why it's optimal to do is something you could google
Hazemoky just say “I don’t know” next time, man.
Most classical guitarists don't. Most hold the guitar so the neck is around a 45 to 60 degree angle with the help of a footstool or guitar support. @@graytonw5238 also it has less damping because it not touching him, the box makes it louder too. It was way louder than normal guitar.
Because it will not go under the chin.

Question de goût, sans doute.
that transient breathing sound destroys the recording. I can't figure out what the fuck that noise is, but it's not synced with the music and it throws off the whole atmosphere.
