Hello Steve, just discovered your channel which is great . I carry a Mamiya C220 with my kit. Mainly to use for night photography but I use it now and again. Love film cameras to a point where I wish digital had never been invented ( hours in the darkroom puts hairs on your chest) Great stuff. Barrie

Hi Steve, great vid. Rain over here stops play quite a lot too. Soggy bellows and swollen woodwork are not good mates. I use an App on my phone to preview phots. Its called Artist's viewfinder. You put in your camera systems and focal lengths in. When you open it and point it at your comp, it superimposes a grid of your chosen focal lengths. If I see a phot I like when out and about working, I can take a snap with viewfinder. It records the scene with focal length grid and positions it on a map so I can find it again. You can convert it to Mono as well. Worth the money I think. Cheers Diz

I like the idea of your pocket camera for a trial against the format you're going to shoot. I've been trying the ViewFinder - Mark II phone app setting up my 1x1, 6x4.5, 6x7, 6x17 for medium format with different focal lengths assigned based on the lenses I have. So far so good. Goes without saying but I will, you are doing a real service for new photographers by putting these videos out as many viewers are without film knowledge. Looking for your B&W and C41 development videos in the future. Thanks.
I must look at that iPhone app Stuart, the screen is so big it would give a better idea of he final result. I keep promising to make a few videos on developing but I never seem to get round to it.

I loved the first image of the tree and roots, but the other image was excellent as well. I also use the identical light meter but my point and shoot is the LX10. Thanks for sharing, I certainly enjoy your videos

Hi Murray, glad you enjoyed the video. In answer to your question I would indeed meter exactly the same for colour negative material. Ensuring sufficient shadow detail is paramount whereas the highlights are rarely a problem. I always take two frames of each scene and add an extra stop for the second in case I’ve misjudged the area of shadow detail I want to see clearly.
I love your videos Steve. I'm a digital shooter but I enjoy your approach and the pace you do your photography. It seems less rushed. Ever considered a video on how you process? I'm curious about how you get from film to digital and then process in Lightroom. Anyway, great video as always.

Loved your first B&W shot. I would not have seen that outcome from the scene as I saw it in the video. Looks wonderful in B&W also. Clearly a great eye for composition. Is your Bronica an S2? I loved this one and learned a lot. Thanks for your efforts!
It’s an SQAi Erich, very easy to use and completely reliable too. I preview with my iPhone and would not be able to predict the outcome if I relied on just my eyes. I find my hit rate is a lot higher than when I did not use a preview device.
Hi Steve, You said that you opened up your exposure to bring the shadow detail to Zone III. Do you not mean that you closed it down? As I understand it, the meter will set the trunks at zone V. To place them at zone III you need to reduce the exposure (i.e. larger f-number, smaller aperture or faster shutter speed). may be it is a matter of terminology ? Great videos.

I too spot meter the shadows, however I leave them at Zone V (I've been flamed over this) and for some reason, they still come out around Zone III. I'm getting ready to have my film tested. Appreciate you putting in the effort to make these videos!
Thanks Spencer, I love Sekonic sport meters too. I noticed you placed your significant shadows on zone V but then again with 8x10 and even 4x5 there is the sheer luxury of such a large amount of information to play with it doesn’t harm the final result. I often overexpose heavily and enjoy the wonderful open shadows this gives but the negative can be a bit dense and harder to scan in the smaller formats. I took some FP4+ 4x5 shots last year and made an error in exposure with the first image 1 stop under and second 2 over yet both looked almost identical after the scanning stage. In 35mm and to a lesser extent 120 I like a thin negative to reduce grain and enhance sharpness. My current developer is HC110 which I like due to its economy and long life. When I shot exclusively in B&W I used Xtol but I never manage to use up a whole batch now.
A brilliant and very informative video, personally I get so much out of the details you go into. I’m presuming you are using the Zenzanon PE lenses with the quality of your images? Please may I ask what developer you used? I really like HP5+, it’s my go to film. Thanks for such a great video I got so much out of.
Thanks Mark. My lenses are a mix of the earlier S and later PS models, I’ve just switched to a 150mm S as it is smaller and lighter. The film was developed in Kodak HC110 for 5 minutes at a dilution of 1:31. It is a very economical developer and seems well suited to HP5+.

Best advice for woodland is to use longer lenses Paul. Wideangles are very hard to work with and I typically exclude as much sky as possible.

Thanks, I prefer the 1:1 ratio and find it very easy to compose images with this aspect ratio.
