The crazy part is those kind of fenders used to be cheap and in every pown shop in the 80s and early 90s. That’s why Kurt used them, Everybody only wanted the Stratocaster’s and telecasters. Grunge bands made theses guitar popular therefore made the value go up. And it’s been that way ever since
I'm right there with you, I hate the gatekeepers who say that "true" Nirvana fans are supposed to hate Teen Spirit 🙄 It's in my top 5 Nirvana songs, maybe even top 3!
You really did analyze a lot on the way how Kurt played Smells Like Teen Spirit, especially on how he strums it differently around the outro and you played it accurately. You made me like the song all over again and i’m starting to love your channel a lot more than ever! Thanks for the cover by the way! I got so excited a couple of days ago when you announced it to us.
And question, while recording the Nevermind album, did he use a DS1 pedal or a DS2? I know around late 91, he used a DS2 but I’m not entirely sure. Do you know?
Thank you so much for the kind words! Trying my best to play it as close to how Kurt played it 😃 It's widely believed that Kurt used a DS-1 on Nevermind
@@user-ib3gj3ty9khe used a DS-1 on Nevermind (with the exception of a few songs like Lithium, Territorial Pissings, etc.) and a DS-2 (set to Mode 1) on In Utero after he broke his DS-1. However, on In Utero he also heavily used a Sans Amp Classic.
This is the video I watch when I need to remember how to play this song. You've taught me so many nuances to the solo that I just cannot imagine missing these days. Thanks for all the great content!
Wow man, I’m really impressed. You even captured all the little subtleties. I love the end of the solo where the note just feeds back - sounds just like the record.

truly have the ear for it. I think the only minor differences i can hear is the equipment recording kurt. maybe even the room acoustics playing the small difference. Its like you have the exact sound but theres something so small and miniscule missing, maybe an overdub or something.
watching your cover of it and have also played this song for a long time i always find myself looking back on the diffrent versions of the Verse and Solo tabs out there, ive mixed and matched the verse. to clearify NG is using G5 B6 for the verse going in, ive prefered going into the verse with B1 E1 then in the (hello hello howlow) i slide up to B6 G5 as it sounds more on point from my own point of view. i always love hearing everyone's take on this iconic song and NG is up there as one of the best.

Also where can I find a eastwood hi flier? i'm really obsessed with that guitar, i'm a lefty btw but i think that the guitar itself is pretty rare, a lefty hi flier would be the double of rare haha Sorry for my bad english btw, have a nice day! I really loved this cover
Thank you so much, I'll check out your covers 😊 I would check Eastwood's website, I heard they are bringing back their hi fliers but I am not 100% sure
I know this is an old video, and I'm not entirely sure if you'll see this, but something I noticed while listening to the isolated tracks of Smells like teen spirit the solo has power chords during the "Hello" part, and NO ONE (atleast that I've heard) has played them
That's the reason why les Paul players can't make this tone because they don't use a mustang your cover is fantastic because you used a mustang ( I'm personally a great Nirvana fan. ) Deposit using ss mustang instead of hs one ( the song was originally played on Kurt's hs mustang ) it sounds really great.
Hey Eric, I have a technique question. When you switch from the clean tone to the distorted tone for that main intro/chorus riff, how are you getting that almost engine rev sound? Are you just playing through the riff normally and the distortion is just doing that on its own? Or are you doing something sneaky with your left hand technique? Been trying to get that for ages and can’t quite seem to nail it.
@@NirvanaGuitarsDidn’t Kurt use a strat on the album version of Smells Like Teen Spirit? For some reason I have a vague memory of hearing Butch Vig say that’s what Kurt used.
You have some great videos! I don't think anyone on TH-cam has this much information on nirvana guitars lol I view you as the expert. So in your opinion if someone had a budget of $1,500 and wanted to buy one used guitar that you could play the most nirvana songs on and sound the most like them, would you recommend a strat or mustang?
It would be awesome if you could have tabs somewhere on the screen in the future for us to play long and jam. I cant afford the set up but I can afford the practice
I do have to say, while your cover sounds really good it's not really that identical In my opinion. Kurt's guitar tone was a little more dry and incased, your tone sounds more open and is a little more crispy like something I'd hear from a Hendrix guitar, if that makes sense. I'm not too good in describing things haha
It does sound nearly perfect HOWEVER I think it would sound even more accurate with thicker strings. What ones are you using, regular slinky? Maybe ones like Heavy bottom would sound more dried and less modern and more identical. Regardless, great cover, I really appreciate the time and the effort it must have taken!
I can’t afford a guitar pedal so when I cover the song I do the intro on the bridge pickup turned down low and then I switch to the neck pickup which is turned all the way up
We’ll unfortunately never know for sure, all we can do is speculate based on the little info we have and guess by listening to isolated tracks. You’d think that for an album as monumentally important as Nevermind, that’d we have concrete info on what gear was used on what 30 years later but nope 🙃
@@NirvanaGuitars well kurts mustang at the time still had a single coil in the bridge. I can tell by ear (ive listened to the isolated track several times) its a full sized likely seymour duncan humbucker just by how tight the distortion is. Ive also gotten extremely close with my HSS strat with a JB in it. In my personal opinion - a mustang is too tinny (atleast with single coil pickups) to have created that tone, especially layered. But thats just my opinion. Like you said, its really hard to know. He could have also used his jag, but i feel like the tone is too bright to be that
This is awesome! If you could help me out, I’m not sure why but my ds2 somewhat “lowers” the volume and sounds muddy when I use it with my small clone. For my amp I use a mesa dual rec. What could be the cause of that muddy tone? I also use Kurt’s settings for the clone and ds2.
