If you're trying to lay out stuff tight, you can save a lot of time and effort, and increase accuracy, by attaching a bipod to your prism rod. For some reason most of the people I work with put the bipod legs on their side of the prism rod (that is, the side away from the instrument) but I have found that it works much better if you put the bipod legs on either side of the line from the prism to the instrument. This also has the advantage that if the prism rod starts to fall over it falls toward you, maikng it easier to catch before it hits the ground.

Yes, in a clear space is waste of time try level the pole. Just use it upside down. (Just be careful to not step on or kick the prism)
