After picking apples for 25 years,I've learned a great way to tell if apples are ripe enough.Apples ,just like peaches, have a green BACKGROUND color. When that background color starts turning yellow, the sugar is there and you can pick it..This is an outward inward process on the trees. So picking size and color increases yield.outer limbs first then inner limbs later.
If there's a lot of space between trees, you can use cones around the trunk to prevent climbing. You can also try netting if they come from other trees nearby. Installing barn owl boxes can help create habitat for natural predators and reduce the squirrel population
@@burntridgenursery591 tree grows under phone lines and cable tv next to other trees and along a fence i tried net it was hard to seal, and they snuck in we have hawks, but they seem to like the doves and other birds also lots of rabbits around, so they are easier than squirrels to eat I suppose i could try an owl box not sure if i can attract one and might have too much other prey to bother with squirrels I did have success putting orange juice bottles over apples, but it is a lot of trouble and looks silly having bottles all over tree LOL
I feel your pain, mate... hard to understand how he has all these beautiful apples out in the open. Here in Australia, rats, possums, birds, everything attacks my crop, even with netting...
Thanks for pointing that out! I'll try to figure out how to fix that. It should have ended at 3:46. Perhaps you can tell I'm an orchardist and not a professional video editor :)

isnt it because the sun hits harder on the outer limbs first and thus they get more sweeter?
@@dns_error yes. And usually the sunny side of an apple will taste better.
Great info, Thanks from Woodinville WA
Excellent info!
I notice you put landscape fabric down where fruit trees are grown. Is that necessary

Good video, could use some work on the editing with the long sections of black screen and silence
