I think that was a mistake on Lindsay's part. Steffi's favourite shot was her inside out forehand. She often made more errors when she had to run for it. And low slices were going to be tough for Lindsay to play against since she was so tall.
Lindsay is a bit like Chris Evert in style, but more powerful. From 1998 onwards, and particularly during the 1999 Wimbledon final, she played Steffi's forehand more often, hitting it just as hard, if not harder! This brought her quite a few victories.
Steffi and Lindsay had a tough three-setter which Steffi barely won the week before this match in Indian Wells. Steffi said she changed her game plan after that match keeping her slice low to Lindsay's backhand which paid off in this match.
