the smith brothers helped me a lot too on the Meyers e47. thanks for all the videos Jeff, big fan of your show. went back and mounted my switches on the shifter like you did after watching this episode.
I drove a truck pretty much like yours, back in the 70s it was a 71 GMC Stake truck 1ton, I put over 300.000 m[les on that truck, the company I dorve for overhauled it once, spent a lot of time in that old truck.
Back about 1988 to about 1995 we had a western and Myer's snow plows. My dad took both the hydro turn hoses and mounted on the plow rams. we would when unhooking the blade from the truck tuck them in to the springs to hold them up off of the ground. also he put trans-x oil in them. It was thinner and worked better in the below zero we get here in the St. Paul metro area of Minnesota. I don't know if your area of the country gets that cold. Just wanted to share.
Just bought my first plow its like this one but in much much worse shape and the pump supposedly didn't work and it's only the plow/a frame I'm sure I can still buy the rest. . Nice vids
My 15 year old E57 just stopped going to the left, also lost fluid, I topped up the fluid, still will not go to the left (goes up and down and right) but now squirts the hydraulic fluid out the top ( the small air hole which is supposed to just get rid of air) dealer says the system must be broken, should not come out the air hole under any circumstances??) However, when I use the trouble shooter it says the quick connects are to be replaced????
You have two separate issues. However, both could be cause by rust debris in the fluid. The ram being a one way, any fluid out the vent is getting past the packing gland/seal. Mine is 40 years old and never been apart and doesn't leak out the vent. If the quick connects are not cleaned every time you go to re-connect them, that can introduce dirt into the system. If the lift ram is all the way down and the vent is exposed to the elements, that can introduce water into the cylinder, causing rust to form, which chews up the seal. As an aside, Meyer recommends changing the oil every year. Inspecting the old fluid will tell you what kind of contaminants are inside the system. If you have never changed to oil, get some and do it while you do this procedure. The check your couplings, see if you can push the valves off the seats on both the male and female. You can do it in place, or take them off and do it in a vice. You have to relieve the pressure off the system first. Disconnect the pump motor, drop the blade to the ground and engage the left, right and up several times. Remove the couplings. Reconnect the motor. Raise the blade and put a block/jack stand under the frame. Drop the blade so the frame is on the stand and can swivel side to side. Just bump the left and right switches to see if you get fluid out of each hose. If you don't, you found your problem. Hoses can and do go bad and block fluid. The male end of a coupling can have either a ball or a pintle for the valve. A pintle comes to a point. Often they become stuck and someone will just smack them with a hammer to un-stick them. That smashes the point down and then there is not enough left to force the valves off their seats. There is a valve in each side of the coupling, so there has to be enough interference to push BOTH valves off the seats.
u may want to changer the hoses, check valves, oil. I run snowplows every yr, I don't want any problems 200 am in 20 degree weather in the middle of nowhere cant get help at that time of day and the cold to fix anything. nice job on the install I have 1 to finish this season yet give my other trk a break next time around.
you can get by with hydraulic oil in your plow there ? here in minnesota we have to use synthetic plow oil or areoshell in them or thay will not work oil gets very thick at 30 below
HEY JEFF GREAT VIDEOS..MY DREAM IS GETTING A UNIMOG TRUCK ONE DAY...I CAN ONLY AFFORD AN OLD TRUCK SO THATS OK MOST HAVE LOW MILEAGE CAUSE THEY ONLY DO 45 TOPS...
Another great and entertaining installment to this series. Have you ever said (you might have and was laughing at the time) why your putting the plow on Ol' Blue when you get so much liquid snow where you are?
Jeff , what are the overall dimensions of this awesome building ( your shop ? ) that you are doing all this work in ? Hopefully on of these years I will get my 30' × 50' Allied Steel Building up & be able to work away from the outside elements ... a heated concrete floor would be icing on the cake .... someday , someday 😊
You need to go back to the smith brothers site and see what kind of fluid is recommended. It's not universal tractor oil or trans fluid. They only recommend Meyers snow plow fluid. Why do you ask? Well the fluid is thinner and does not thicken up when it gets cold and yes it will get cold it's a snow plow not like you use it in the summertime. That and meyer or any good snow plow oil will have additives in it to help prevent freeze ups. You also should flush the pump and rams I think there is special flush fluid for it or you can use kerosene or diesel.
klosnoski Not at all..... trip blade vs trip edge. fishers have more angle and are heavier and much more sturdy No one runs meyers anymore unless its a homesteader min plow
That looks like a nice shop. You need one of those at your house! Keep cranking out these great videos. I love to see that old stuff come to life.

You need to use the meyers plow oil not regular hydraulic fluid.

Plow parts warehouse....
All that work for a crappy meyers plow.... Have to take the bumpers off to fit the dam things on your truck...
in that vintage... Men did'nt care if thier truck looked pretty. Just so long as it worked.
klosnoski Yeah the plow still sucks, bad design and a shitty product... hated the meyers on my old chevys, Fishers the way to go
meyer fisher... still the same
klosnoski
Not at all..... trip blade vs trip edge. fishers have more angle and are heavier and much more sturdy No one runs meyers anymore unless its a homesteader min plow
is that plain napa tractor oil???? That chit will ruin your day at -5 below. fishers NEED the blue smurf wizz.
