"Middle-class attitude is the best attitude for survival"
I'd like to carry that with me for rest of my life.
For me, middle-class attitude essentially means less show-off, more humility and live with certain amount of frugality no matter how much you earn.
Tamil people’s culture and humility that is discussed here comes from thirukkural- the 2 liners that tells how to lead a life. All the mental health issues will vanish away if everyone follows Thirukkural as a way to live. Also aathichudi, only 13 lines of moral values inculcated in tamilians. These are those 13 lines from aathichudi
1. Have desire to do good deeds
2. Calm your anger
3. Help others in whichever way you can
4. Never stop others from providing charity
5. Never boast about what you have
6. Never give up hope/ enthusiasm
7. Don’t underestimate the power of math and literature
8. Begging is shameful
9. Share food with the needy before you eat
10. Act morally
11. Never stop learning
12. Never talk ill about others
13. Never cheat on matters regarding food
If someone asks me what I follow in life, I will say thirukural and aathichudi. I don't know most of the thirukural, but among the 10-15 thirukural I know I try to implement it. Among the first 10 aathichudi I try to implement 5-6 of them. 1 out of 10 I know it's wrong and I still do it and then be cautious about it. Don't prick your teeth with sticks. It means gums... Likewise. If your doing something wrong, atleast you should know that is what I think.

The south indian low key lifestyle is not just limited to Tamilians or Malayalis - but it's probably the entire belt including Karnataka. Some good examples are Narayana murthy/Sudha murthy, Azim Premji, the Kamath brothers of Zerodha, the film actors (say Yash), the Pais of manipal, the late VG Siddhartha of coffee day etc. I don't know if it's good or bad - i guess it's neither good nor bad. It's just that from very young, we are constantly told material success doesn't mean much if you are not educated, well behaved and respected in the society. The most celebrated kid in the school is the one that scores great marks, not the one whose parents own a rolls royce. The most celebrated film star is the late Puneeth - who was humility personified, never got into controversies, was a devout family man etc. It's changing a lot because of internet and young people wanting to emulate who they see (basically the whole world) - but generally people here don't like showoffs
