Freedom has a totally different ring to it in 2022. We started working on this dance in early 2020 unaware of what laid ahead. When dance classes resumed in the fall of 2020 we held classes outside and finished creating this dance.
The dance was created to express what freedom means to us as an organization. For us being free means being able to speak our truth without feeling invalidated, intimidated, or misunderstood.
Speaking truth against institutional racism is not always well-received. In fact, we felt unheard and unseen up until the fateful day when the world watch George Floyd's murder. It seems since that moment, the world was finally ready to listen to what we have been saying for many, many decades.
We hope that our voices continue to be heard and that change continues to happen so that we can all experience true FREEDOM.
