Pastor James T. Meeks is the founder and senior pastor of Salem Baptist Church of Chicago, which has been recognized as one of the fastest growing megachurches in the United States. Salem is the largest African American church in Illinois with over 15,000 members.
In 2002, Pastor Meeks successfully ran for Illinois state senator. His win made him the rst Independent legislator ever elected to the Illinois Senate. He served three terms, where his major focus was on educational equity. He has also served in positions of leadership including chair of the Education committee as well as joint chairman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. Pastor Meeks currently serves as Chairman, Illinois State Board of Education.
In 2005, Pastor Meeks led Salem in the building of the House of Hope, a $50 million, 10,000 seat community and worship center which is the largest facility built from the ground up for the purpose as a worship venue in the United States.

I believe that Christians are quitting church because a lack of Christian love. Some are showing up in hope of recieving from God and others are showing up to go through the motions.
Quite often neither group is leaving satisfied even after the Word of God is preached.
We say and emphasize a lot in our preaching but left untouched by our actions and unnoticed in our living. There are no examples on display so how can they hear?
This question needs to be asked to people OUTSIDE the church and not of insider who have not quit the church. That’s one of the reasons former church people have left. They have been long since alienated.
@@MrJoepusateri I can definitely relate to the alienation that some may deal with by being the example but it's buy the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us to still stay for the sake of the gospel message that transforms. It hasn't been easy. I personally feel that progress is being made in my life as a believer and the prayer is by the living word will also affect the whole which is always in consideration as well.
Also we must believe in the institutional church in the way Jesus Christ set it up to operate. We quite often will abandon His word in favor of what may be comfortable or convenient.
The wheat and the tares(weeds) the real and the fake.....the fake love and the real hate......The favoritism the division oh and the jealousy.... For those that really love Jesus and want to do the Father's will this is heartbreaking.... I really had to cry out to the Father because you get tired of the attacks and the foolery. The attacks that come from the world then you go to God's house and it's full of devils and witches! You really have to be filled with Holy Spirit! I have learned and is learning how to do battle in the spirit and I thank God I press and not throw in the towel!
Christians are not quitting on their relationship with God (in fact many times that is getting stronger when they turn completely to him) but they are quitting the concept of "church" which in many cases has become an organization that seeks to control their money, time, energy, emotions and seeks to replace God. Believers are fed up with seeing ministers and leaders living sinful lives and being Christ intimidators rather than Christ imitators. God is doing a major reset of what His people (the Ecclesia) need to be focused on, sometimes this comes by pulling away and spending time in His presence.

Unless this behavior has major exposure and consequences that will lead to the shift It is necessary for we whom have these concerns stay serving within the current structure by first being inspired in word by our own living and then by the ministry of God's word creating opportunities that will move others in a positive direction as well.
So many are entering in not by their own fault without the proper guidance and will settle for whatever. These are ones we must encourage to find their place that in turn will encourage the whole. It is the church of Christ, not man.

There is a reason why those who teach the Word of God will be judged more harshly. We are called to more than the reading or recitation of the word but to model the meaning in terms of the love we have for God and for one another which love by the power of the Holy Spirit has the ability to transform.
In agreement with everything you have posted regarding why more Christians are leaving church. You have to be called to the ministry of reconciliation, the ministry of the Word of God and know that you have been called to stick and stay engaged through the contradictions. Even with that said for some it still can be very difficult to stay with the process particularly if you have hands on approach. As for pulling away to spend time with God if we do this as often as the need presents we would not be so engaged with doing more than we should which is what Pastor Meeks points out in the sermon. Burn out is the leading cause of people leaving churches.
Genuine question: How do you suppose those who leave the "organization" accomplish the mandate of coming together and all of the "one anothers" in the bible?
Too much foolishness in the church. Too many preachers preaching their opinion instead of the word of God. Too much entertainment. Just wondering when the church started having all these movie screens, disco lights, etc. Church has become more worldly and it's a turn off. So hard to find a Godly, God fearing church these days. So much of the Lord told me and He hasn't said anything. And now everything is virtual so people have become comfortable and don't want to come back to the building.

Reading Hosea 4 today and totally got stuck. When God talks about how the priests and prophets did not teach the Word or help the people to know God and how the people were being destroyed for a lack of spiritual knowledge. My goodness!!!!!

I don't believe the true believers are leaving church,they are leaving their pastors church but not the church of Jesus Christ,God is doing a new thing in his body where he is separating sheep from the goat and he is gathering his last day relmnant,to do great exploit, without being confined to the 4 walls anymore stay strong sons of God.

Church back in old days was Spiritual than today that why I quit on church but not the words of God still filling me.
We have to still maintain all the Word of God.The teaches us not to forsake the assembling.There is purpose in the fellowship of other believers.So we must balance truth not feelings,emotions.

The Bible teaches in the last days there will be a increase in knowledge. Knowledge is here now. Most people know no who they really are. I stop going to the church building so much and began to seek God for myself . At the end of the day when you stand before God it’s you and God and no excuses. The Bible also teaches that there will be a great fallen away. Therefore it is already prophesied. A lot of churches have no power and preach watered down messages. Some teach that Jesus is white and we all know this is not Biblical. There are many many reasons why some of are leaving the church . All I can say is God of creation have mercy on us all. This is my opinion and l am entitled to my opinion. Amen 🙏

I believe it's MOST likely because they are not seeing any change in their lives, and I believe that's because there are not many preaching/teaching the FULL gospel. You hear early on that Jesus Christ came, lived, ,died and rose from the dead ,,but not very many teach that Jesus ALSO ascended and seated at the right hand of The Father, and ALL that it means for us TODAY in the new covenant.
Not to mention they never ever mentions any of the teachings where Jesus talks about Hell, Heaven, end times or living in obedience to God. They never speak on the evil things He rebuked either

My wife stop going to church because of Cliques and being treated like a outsider even after being a active member in the church for 4years . The Paster knows about the clique issues. New people coming to the church should be treated with the same love .

Everyone who says they are christians are not, many had never known God personally or never had a relationship with God. They felt a chill in the church building and became emotional, cried and called themselves christians.
A born again holy spirit filled person is not and will not leave Gods house. They understand the importance of being in the house of God. According to the word of God he says," forsake not to assemble yourselves together more so in the ending than in the beginning." This is a command! We also know there is strength in numbers, that one will chase a thousand but two chase 10,000.we understand the power of Prayer of agreement, and the corporate anointing and out pouring of Gods spirit in the church can not be experienced at home alone.
No matter how bad things are I will never leave the designated meeting place of God. If things are not right then you pray and intercede for the Pastors and Leadership, until God changes the hearts of his people but you do not leave where God has placed you. Bottom line I am going to stand before God, and I do not want to go to Hell because I left God for someone else's actions. For someone else's disrespect and disobedience to Gods word. People backslide and leave God therefore they stop assembling in the house of God.
I "USED" to call myself a Christian. But after Studying the Bible for myself, not just the 66 books but the other books that were left out, I finally know who I am. By blood I'm a descendant from The Tribe of Judah, my heavenly father name is not God or his son Jesus, Psalms 68:4 his name is YAHWEH or Elohim, his begotten son is Yahusha. Sister by blood you are an Israelite, but ofcourse that will not get you into the kingdom. We must obey the Laws, the churches are not teaching this.
@@rodimuspm I will not debate your comment but I am not an Israelite because I am not a Jew. I am a Gentile. Who was grated into the family through the death of Christ Jesus. I also am no longer under the law of the 10 Commandments Jesus said that he came to give us a new covenant. To believe in him, he did all that needs to be done on the cross.
He became a curse for us so we are now blessed. He became poor so I can be rich and inherit the kingdom as an heir with Christ Jesus. He took all my punishment severe whipping and was beaten and bled , and with his stripes I was healed. He went to Hell for my sins so that I do not have to go to hell. He rose from the dead on the 3 day and got up out of the grave so death can no longer hold my body.
Jesus is now seated in Heaven at the right hand of his Father and mine. He said I could call God my Father and Jesus is my Elder Brother. Elder older because I now have many brothers and sisters. Noneof this was done by me keeping the law but by the son of the living God he made my freedom from sin possible. He changed my life not by the law. But by his love and unmerited favor that he chose to give me.
The Jews called God, G-d and Jesus Yahweh because of fear they would not say his name. The name Jesus means Emanuel which translated God with us. What we call him does not mean we know him and you have to "KNOW " him in a intimate and personal way. Jesus has to live inside of you through his Holy Spirit. He has to be your Lord and Saviour. Through confession of your sins to him ask him to forgive you of your sins and wrong doing of rebellion against him Ask him to wash you clean in his blood and come live inside of you, ask him to fill you with his Holy Spirit. If this has not been done no matter what name you call Jesus you can not be saved. And he don't know you! The keeping of the 10 Commandments can't and will not do that for you, that's why Jesus came to earth to bring us a better way. Did you know if you break just 1 of the 10 Commands you were considered Guilty of all 10?
No one could do it not even the Priest. Therefore Jesus done away and do not hold us accountable to the 10 Commandments any more. Hallelujah !!! Thank you Jesus.
As far as the "other" books of the bible. Since they were not "Originally included" in the bible text, I have no need for them. If God would have wanted them in the bible he is All Powerful and would not have let them be removed from the "Original Bible." Please, find you a Spirit of God filled Church and go to Bible Study it will teach you about Jesus. Amen. ❤ Without the Spirit of God you can not Understand the writing in his Bible because he does not think like us, Gods ways are Higher than our ways. Therefore, the Holy Spirit living inside us is key to our Survival, and understanding. He is key to our living right.!

Why I will walk away is when my pastor uses me as an example of what she preaches as bad, I’m tired of seeing as bad or being judged as not holy enough for the masters use. It's all in the Bible, a great falling away, but in other parts of the world,, great revivals. God is still.in charge. Some believers may just begin to fellowship in small groups and love each other and do whatever God will lead them to do without large human structures but simple fellowship and services of love.
What made me walk away is to see someone like trump curse, lie and insult people and so becoming of misconduct in a person , yet to see people reference him as if he is the second coming of Christ . Then to see the Gospel networks support him and his misdeeds , just opened my eyes to church and politics! To see so many seasoned prophetic teachers of the gospel tailor Christianity to fit racial ideology, it made me lose faith . I guess the new Christianity is loving from a distance .

This is really easy to answer. For generations, you were what your parents raised you as. When you had questions, there was little place to go for information. Once the internet came into play and the fact that you can Google everything, people were armed with much more information. This information created more questions. People weren't just relying on what their priest or clergyman was telling them or preached from the pulpit. The really difficult questions starting coming into play and most clergy were ill-prepared to handle. Example, if God wanted people to be saved and said that this was the most important thing in your life. It's not how much money you make or having a family or how high up the corp ladder you go, the point is made that your salvation and where you spend eternity is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING in your life. Ok, so one would then expect that the way to get to heaven would be made very clear. It is not clear. When you ask questions about the bible, it is because the bible has undergone thousand of changes as well as being translated over and over again. In addition, the bible is incredibly cryptic. If you were trying to explain something to someone and that something was extremely important, wouldn't you make sure that you weren't cryptic? Wouldn't you make sure that everything was explained clearly?

....you don't really see miracles happening .not very many at all, and I believe churches should alot more time for testimonies, which are important in giving glory to God and to encourage their brothers and sisters in The faith...
The average service last two hours or less.Praise and worship and collections last longer than most sermons. What do you suggest eliminating?

Because Jesus is not exalted some display their families,wealth and self worth leading followers to near worship them while the gospel of the precious love of God to salvation and eternal life is rarely preached.

I quit my church because the pastor quit on his assignment. The pastor actually maneuvered the sell of the church, to his benefit. How? Don't know, but the saints are now leasing the same building. I can't pastor Ron of Cleveland. I just can't!
We're leaving the buildings that pervert the holy things of God. The place ran by scribes and pharisees, not the true shepards of God. Folks are dealing with way too much to entertain the foolish that goes on in a lot of churches. That's what people are leaving. Could it be God telling us to get out?

Preachers have compromised for the almighty dollar. They stopped preaching against sin and Let down the standards. The world has crept in and Holiness is gone.The devil has crepr in unaware. Get back to the old paths preach the true word of God. Show them the true love Of God. Teach them they must repent of all their sins. Turn from their wicked ways, and walk in the righteousness and Holiness of God. Saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost.
What does being a prayerful Christian have anything to do with leaving a church? Being a church member is not a fruit of the spirit nor a sign of true Christianity.
Amen, they believe that because that's all they know. The Bible teaches that once the spirit of truth comes, we no longer need any man to teach us the Holy spirit will teach us.
We need teachers not preachers. And we need the teachers to be anointed by God. The false teachings of the church have ran rampant for a thousand years. In a present day all we have is people yipping and hollering mentioning an occasional scripture and not teaching anyone anything. Every Sunday people leave the church dumber than when they came. By and large almost everything Christians think they know or believe to date is inaccurate. All Christians need to stop putting their faith in one man to teach them and ask God to show them the scriptures. God/Yahweh asks us to sanctify his name which in English is Yahweh, almost no modern Church even mentions his name. Yahweh's name was removed from most of the Bibles in over 7,000 places and replaced with God or Lord.
Church is a mess. I'm tired of the hollering. Teach us the scriptures not what you think or better yet what God gave you and sometimes I wonder if God told you to preach such nonsense. I want to hear how to survive in todays world!!! Not what happened 1000 years ago. Lol
As Jesus said, my Father's House is a House of Prayer! "Teach" by rightly dividing the Word of GOD! EMPHASIZING "TEACH" the entire context of the Word, (not just a verse with a theme) and explain how it is to be applied to our lives today!!

it's because of leaders not called by my heavenly father, he himself, not man teaches his anointed to teach his people, and it's the same thing he taught his son, the gospel of jesus christ, which my father taught him to justify his people,Paul tells us in Roman's 1chap,verse 16thru17, for l am not ashamed of the gospel of jesus christ,for it is the power of God unto salvation to the Jew first and also to the Greek, for therein is the righteousness of God,revealed from faith to faith, most of the leaders are ashamed of the gospel,jesus spoke out against the leaders of his day, and it's the same thing with the leaders in the church today ,jesus said in Matthew 23chap,13,verse woe unto you scribes and pharisees,hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men, (preachers want preach what he preached,for ye neither go In yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in, that's why judgement is gone began in the church, my father is gone take down all the false prophets, who only care about the money and not the souls of men and women.
Because these Wicked Sunday Churches has nothing to do with the Bible (which is not a religious book). The Bible clearly calls Pastors “greedy dumb dogs” because they don’t know the word of the Most High Almighty (the Creator) and they focus on Money and not souls. They are leading people to the slaughter with them because the word says that destruction is coming to them. 🙏
I’m not going to say that I know everything but I do know this.so many preachers and pastors and Christian do and say the same thing.and that’s God is going to do something like heal them,deliver them or fix some sort of problem that they are dealing with.But God has done everything he’s going to do through his son Jesus Christ and his son sat down at his right hand and said,it’s FINISHED.God has done everything you need to live a prosperous and victorious life on this earth not after you have gone to your other life,but in this life,he’s done it through Jesus Christ and he ain’t going to do it again because he’s already done everything.all you have to do is receive it by faith and not hope because when you say what God is going to do,you’re in unbelief and that’s not going to work.faith is the substance of things hope for,the evidence of that which is not seen.hope said I will get it someday but faith said it’s mine now.mark 11:23-25 tells you that when you’re here faith for something believers should believe you receive it and you shall have it,not going to it’s yours now and it will come into manifestation and that’s the gospel truth.he’s already done everything you have a need for.praise the lord.y’all do it and see for yourself not try it,do it

Lets not forget brothers and sisters Jesus came for the sick not the well. Church is like a hospital and the ones who come have all kinds of sicknesses and disease. Some have been raped, molested, beaten physically abused with now low self esteem, and rejection, some full of pride, some rebellious. Some murdering spirits, others lust, some whoredom spirits and perversion, others lying, some full of hate, anger and rage others jealous, self- centerdness, think they know it all, they are unteacheable, some revenge and etc.
These are all things we come to the church house carring. We call them issues but they are spirits that we must be delivered from. Deliverance can only occur when you want to be free therefore with some it takes years with others a few months, others a few weeks, others a few days. According to how much you pray, read the word and seek God. And these spirits operate in all from the Pulpit to the back. So now, you know what's up in the church which cause people to act out, cut up, and etc. So we all need to stay in church and at the alter until we individually get our help and deliverance. Could it be that the leaders of today's institutional church have gotten so caught up in other things that the power of God is not moving? God is not asking any leader to 'entertain' believers and make them happy, looking at the words of Jesus, Jesus wanted all of His people to GO and make disciples of all the nations, Jesus wanted His people to love Him with all their heart and soul, Jesus wanted all of His people to be ready for His return, Jesus wanted us to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth and through it all He said He would love us and not forsake us, He would give rest to the weary and show us His grace and mercy. God's word, which is the truth we should be staying with, said we are to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all time handed down to the saints. It does not say 'plus what ever you want to add' or 'if you want to worship me in your own special way', believers if it is not in God's word, don't make it part of your worship and service to Him.
To us it seems that leaders are caught up in how to fix America and so many other things. Jesus called out certain believers to be leaders so that they would preach as He directed. Instead, we have leaders selling or buying books, devotionals, programs, trainings, conferences, merchandise, etc.; focusing on youth groups, Sunday school classes, VBS, singles groups, recovery groups, grief groups, men's groups, woman's groups, etc.; making sure they have board meetings and church votes, following the government standards, not paying taxes and calling it a blessing from God, even though the church of satan does not have to pay taxes either, sending out tax statements (yet pretending they don't know who gives the most money), making sure their building is beautiful, etc.; focusing months on holidays set up by the catholic church not by God, bringing in secular 'holidays' right into the worship of God, such as mother's day, father's day, thanksgiving, the fourth of July, etc.; setting up denominations that get hung up on one thing or another and believing they are the only group doing it right, AKA, I follow Cephas, I follow Paul, I follow Appolos. Absolutely none of this is in God's word yet leaders focus on these things anyway.
Why, why can't leaders and believers see how they have gotten off track? Every Christian believer seems to be thankful for what Jesus has done in their life, but not thankful enough to rid themselves of what is not in God's word. Why?
Remember Jesus said, when He returns will He find faith on the earth. Jesus did not speak frivolously, Jesus spoke many time about such things, being ready, following the narrow road which few would find because they are on the broadway, Jesus is warning His followers, that they will be led astray, yet even when you point out the most common ways they have gone astray, they will not listen and get back on the narrow way.
Is there anyone out there that will purify how they serve and worship the Lord? Do leaders and believers understand that when you add to God's word, you make your worship and service lukewarm? Do leaders and believers understand that for centuries God has put up with this lukewarmness and He has given us the message that the time of His vomiting this lukewarm church is approaching very, very quickly. These messages are warnings to His people that you need to heed the knocking on the door and come out from the church that 'does it their own way'. Do not fall for those that say Revelation 3:14-22 is about 'fake' Christians that were never really saved, God sent an angel to each of His churches because they are His people.
We have been preaching the messages from God as a warning to His people. Time is running very short and you will be without excuse. He who has ears to hear, please hear before it is too late! Last Days Message - Even Though Today's Leaders Say It, We Are Not Called To Straighten Out The World. We Are Called To Reach The Lost! Christians are not called to fix the world. Remember whose kingdom you are in. Human effort cannot save the world, only sharing the gospel can help people. Jesus and the apostles never involved themselves in the Roman government, their focus was the lost. Jesus is looking for followers that keep His word with no added traditions and ways of man. So much through the centuries, continuing today, has been added to God's word, that God is holding back His power looking for followers that will get back to the purity of His word. Believers dump all the added 'extras' that have been added to the worship of God and you will see the power of God move to change people's lives. Believers you MUST serve God as He desires, do not serve God as you desire because those ways are not in His word, and He is not pleased with them. Man-made 'programs', 'classes', 'books', 'conferences', 'devotionals' and traditions are holding back the power of God. Only God knows everything that you've been through, and man will never know it. Believers spend time with God rather than doing such things that are the ideas of men. Man got off track shortly after Jesus went to sit at the right hand of the Father and believers need to recognize that and get back solely to what is in God's word. Nothing else is needed. Pay attention to the knocking on the institutional, mainstream church and come out from among them and get back to the purity of God's word. Does anyone out there have the ears to hear this message and make those changes? If you don't, you are in danger of being part of the vomit that Jesus speaks about in Revelation 3:14-22 which is soon to come to pass. We earnestly ask you to examine yourself and the leaders you are following.

you will most likely hear responses like these:
“I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I
have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been
baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good
and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually
knows the gospel that saves them. These useless phrases don’t describe a thing about what
the gospel is and has left a devastating effect
of people not knowing what it is that they are
saved from nor how they are saved; which
leaves a more serious effect of people questioning their salvation.
Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salvation that is in Christ with vague church
sounding phrases that do not communicate
anything. But rather present God’s word with
clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel:

Sin was passed upon all men by one man
Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin
(Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of
condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of
this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good
works one might do we are still found sinners
in the sight of our Creator God. And all unrighteousness and those who follow get indignation and wrath. We cannot be found
righteous for by God’s law we are found sinners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even
one law we are found guilty.
It is for this reason of not being able to
create our own righteousness and being born
in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus
3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in
the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross
2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath
and judgement that was intended for us sinners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial,
and resurrection on our behalf that we are
able to have peace with God and forgiveness
of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good
news is unto all but only those that believe in
it are made righteous in Christ (Romans
3:22).
It is then after we have heard this good
news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit
and we are now part of Christ’s body the
church (Eph 1:13)
There is nothing that we need to do, no
good works that are required, and no bad
works that can separate us from our new position in Christ (Romans 8:35-39).
Faith and belief in this information from
God’s word is the gospel.
The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your
heart. The gospel is not making him lord of
your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not
being baptized with water.
So next time someone asks you if you are
saved. Give them the clear assured answer
