Now the real question is. Can Lockpickinglawyer pick it? Edit: Let me just give all of the people who liked this thanks, and I’m not one to say this but thanks for 69 likes. And *NICE*
6 pin not insanely percise in order to make something really hard to pick 1. what kind of lock do we dont use? WAFER locks they are shitty and dumb as fuck 2. tolerence if you can get it down to a milionth of a mm then you got a dificult thing to get expensive and hard to pick 3. dont use keyed alike (unless you got a reason for it)
I subscribed a while back when you were got your excavator. I am going back through your old videos and really enjoy watching them. This is an awesome build. It appears that you have many talents. Working night shift in a control room, your videos get me through some long nights. Thanks
I'd say nothing under 10k$ though it's hard to know exactly how many hours you worked on this. for art projects the best way to price is (your hourly rate)*(hours worked on the project)+(materials cost)+(shipping costs) never price your hourly rate under minimul hourly wage obviously.. that should give you a rough expectation of what to charge at minimum for it. For novelty art items such as this it should be notred that up-pricing can be a selling point to wealthy elites too.
Shipping costs shouldn't be in the price calculation but the number that the rest of that sum comes too should be multiplied by a percentage, say 10% to give you a profit. (well that is what business do)
No! He's not selling a peace of furniture!! That is art! I would add a nother 25% to the hourly rate, and then at least double the summ based on your formula. And the buyer has to take care of the shipping himself.
$10k would be my minimum price, but honestly i would set it higher. You are already at 5 figures so don't be shy. How many hours have you put into this? 500? So around $15'000 with an hourly rate of 30$ seems fair. If you wanna go for a cool number you can do the whole $12'345 If you think its too expensive and only a millionaire will ever buy it, go with the memes and make it $69'420 and hope a certain guy sees it.
Hi John, I would start the bidding at $400 due to time and ingenuity of knowing how to replicate at a much larger scale! I've seen your Channel on TH-cam for a couple years now and I'm sorry to say I didn't watch now I'm hooked and can't stop! What a talented man you are coming from a 71-year-old guy. God bless and take care from California.
minimum cost would be time and materials... * time being the total hours of planning and building together, with a reasonable hourly rate for your expertise and location * materials should not assume scraps, but buying new from a local store. did you say how many hours? if not, i"ll assume 50 hours of design at 60$/hour, and 150 hours of construction at 40$/hour, and 500$ in materials. that puts us to 9500$ minimum, and I have very low confidence in those first 4 assumptions... but that's just to get our minimum. assuming this is a custom commission, it's fitting that this would have a premium price to ensure that the craftsman is well compensated. I could see a quote being 12,000$-14,000$. but that isn't what this is. what's the demand for a product like this? this was built without a customer in mind. so the people that are interested should not be expected to pay time and materials, since they are going to offer what it's worth to them, not the cost to manufacture. it's worth is determined by what someone will pay for it. if Abus wasn't interested, and if you couldn't find an eccentric millionaire, what you can actually get for it might be closer to 4,000$-7,000$? 4k might be optimistic, but every time i see one of these videos and an auction follows, I'm surprised by the numbers I see. it seems there is actually a market for wacky and unique things like this. i hope someone is really excited by this, and offers a fair price.
Oh, it’s (lotta work) coming across extremely precisely in the video. The obsession is tantamount to Klaus Kinski’s in Fitzcaraldo, moving an old river boat over a mountain. Totally poetic. Totally artsy, totally self-deprecating, and totally informative and amusing. Should be in a museum. Move the hell over, Claes Oldenburg!!! You never had the skill or dedication to do anything like this. Shame on you, Claes!!! Priceless !!!!
Regarding your question of how much the lock is worth monetarily: You're thinking about this the wrong way. You should put all the ABUS branding on the lock(don't upload any of that footage to TH-cam), which is the lock's manufacturer your model is designed after. Then contact ABUS and see if they'd be interested in buying it. It's an old German company. They'd probably put it up on display somewhere. Perhaps you could CNC their logo on to the key and lock itself. If not, switch the branding to another lock manufacturer, Master Lock for example. See if they want to buy it... Hell, this is the kind of sh*t Jimmy DiResta gets paid to do and it wouldn't even need to be functional.
ETXAlienRobot201 No trademark infringement here at all. I’d bet if you took a Master lock apart you’d see the same type of internals, so it would be impossible for a company to claim a trademark infringement. Besides, as it sits it has no company name on it.
I loved it. I’m in awe of your work and work ethic. I think you should sell it for whatever a good psychiatrist will charge you to fix whatever it is that made you start a project like this in the first place. Thanks for the great videos.

Materials used + Time spent on build + Power used + Tools degradation factor = True Fair Price -> That only you can know what it is worth!!! Great work ;D

I would also like to add this channel has become my favourite to watch, so keep up the great work. Cheers,Dale.
As one of the greatest things to come out of 2020 so far...it's probably worth 50 Gs.
You said that was a total waste of time was the best part. Amazing is not a big enough word to describe the work or finished product of what you have created.
Now the real question is. Can Lockpickinglawyer pick it? Edit: Let me just give all of the people who liked this thanks, and I’m not one to say this but thanks for 69 likes. And *NICE*
The tolerances on he core, not to mention the materials, ought to make this pretty easy to pick. I mean, apart from the sheer scale, anyway.
6 pin not insanely percise
in order to make something really hard to pick
1. what kind of lock do we dont use? WAFER locks they are shitty and dumb as fuck
2. tolerence if you can get it down to a milionth of a mm then you got a dificult thing to get expensive and hard to pick
3. dont use keyed alike (unless you got a reason for it)
Shimmable design :)
I think you could pick it woth your bare hands
I subscribed a while back when you were got your excavator. I am going back through your old videos and really enjoy watching them. This is an awesome build. It appears that you have many talents. Working night shift in a control room, your videos get me through some long nights. Thanks
I'd say nothing under 10k$ though it's hard to know exactly how many hours you worked on this. for art projects the best way to price is (your hourly rate)*(hours worked on the project)+(materials cost)+(shipping costs)
never price your hourly rate under minimul hourly wage obviously.. that should give you a rough expectation of what to charge at minimum for it.
For novelty art items such as this it should be notred that up-pricing can be a selling point to wealthy elites too.
Go big or go home, big lock big price 25k
Shipping costs shouldn't be in the price calculation but the number that the rest of that sum comes too should be multiplied by a percentage, say 10% to give you a profit. (well that is what business do)
No! He's not selling a peace of furniture!! That is art! I would add a nother 25% to the hourly rate, and then at least double the summ based on your formula.
And the buyer has to take care of the shipping himself.
I don't have a clue what it's worth, but what an advertising piece it is. I love it.
Regards Peter
Easily over 10K in work alone, but as art. 20-30k.
Agreed
Doesn't happen often, but I do love when youtube recommendations gets something right. Subscribed.
That’s gotta be worth $10k - $20k as a piece of art
Extremely entertaining video. You should keep it for your grandkids.
$10k would be my minimum price, but honestly i would set it higher. You are already at 5 figures so don't be shy. How many hours have you put into this? 500? So around $15'000 with an hourly rate of 30$ seems fair. If you wanna go for a cool number you can do the whole $12'345
If you think its too expensive and only a millionaire will ever buy it, go with the memes and make it $69'420 and hope a certain guy sees it.
Considering a poorly trained auto mechanic can charge a billable rate of $80/hr, yeah, I'd aim high. :)
nice
Hi John, I would start the bidding at $400 due to time and ingenuity of knowing how to replicate at a much larger scale! I've seen your Channel on TH-cam for a couple years now and I'm sorry to say I didn't watch now I'm hooked and can't stop! What a talented man you are coming from a 71-year-old guy. God bless and take care from California.
minimum cost would be time and materials...
* time being the total hours of planning and building together, with a reasonable hourly rate for your expertise and location
* materials should not assume scraps, but buying new from a local store.
did you say how many hours? if not, i"ll assume 50 hours of design at 60$/hour, and 150 hours of construction at 40$/hour, and 500$ in materials. that puts us to 9500$ minimum, and I have very low confidence in those first 4 assumptions... but that's just to get our minimum.
assuming this is a custom commission, it's fitting that this would have a premium price to ensure that the craftsman is well compensated.
‘Wacky and unique’, this guy made an art piece to put it simple. Lock companies would easily pay $10k for this, i have no doubt
Hell, this is the kind of sh*t Jimmy DiResta gets paid to do and it wouldn't even need to be functional.
the way trademarks are so abused these days, that sounds like a very bad idea....
ETXAlienRobot201
No trademark infringement here at all.
If you actually use this people aren’t gonna steal the object that being locked, there gonna steal the padlock
work of art. your resourcefulness keeps amazing me. you should be one of the first colonizers of mars.
Contact ABUS. They could be interested.
I would say no less than 12,000$
Incredible work, your 3 d mind skills and hand eye skills are fantastic. I think the value of that lock is priceless as one of your kids/grandkids ( I’m now Bapa ie grandpa to 9) will want this and the video to always remember the patience, work ethic and skills of their GRANDPA.
$20K if someone at ABUS commissioned it for a promo
Materials used + Time spent on build + Power used + Tools degradation factor = True Fair Price -> That only you can know what it is worth!!!
Great work ;D
Your attention to detail is quite remarkable. Well done....
This is one of the most impressive videos I've ever seen
Worth as much as the guy wants to give on the day you sell it. Great project. Not too crazy about the digital camo look of the shacle.
no less than a grand!
it's a nice conversation piece. schlage lock would buy it, i recon.
thanks for the video.
You are quickly becoming my favorite mad scientist!
$8 - $12 thousand easy for the padlock. What a one of a kind beautiful piece of art. Your an incredible Master Woodworker!! Hands down!!!
Hey John, it was great to watch you create something so useless but so educational at the same time. You are indeed a skilled woodworker that is the 'key' to it. it was really entertaining to watch 😁👍👍👍👍
Is not a waist of time,is are the say!Great work!
A pretty penny. It's awesome dude. You are sitting on an artistic gold mine. Might as well make another. I love it.
I agree with the people saying you should sell it to a lock company. This would be something that they would be proud to own. This is a masterpiece of woodworking and I am impressed with your skill
First off, I'd be making a plaque with Farmcraft 101 on the front so Every one knows where it came from, then I'd be selling it to someone with an insanely large barn, or someone that's nuts about locks. Surely you can get upwards of 10K for this.
All the materials, the time, the Labour, the sweat and whatever else...
Nice work, man! Big fan of this lock mini series, and your channel generally
Easy $10,000. You constructed a one-off piece of woodcraft. Excellent artisan technique.
Priceless museum worthy piece.
Nice job John! Impressive and great content. I seem to learn something from you most of your videos. You would have been a great shop teacher 😊
It’s definitely awesome! Now I’d like to see you make a giant wooden chain, so you could lock up one of your heavy equipment. Wish I had all those bada$$ tools you have in your shop! Nice setup bro! 😁
Newer seen projects like this one before. Well done John.
Wow, you saw the whole thing through. Clever work all the way.
Put it on online auction. This is not just a simple lock. This is hard work only a carpenter can imagine.
I just discovered your channel. Wow ! You are a true artist. No matter if it's a hydraulic piston, a carburetor, removing a king pin from a wheel direction, or to find a way to do something you really got it. Really great videos. Thank you ! 10 k minimum for the Padlock. So much work and thinking in that.
Workmanship at another level - brilliant! Such craftmanship! Value - I do not have an idea, some mention 5k, I could believe that. Talk to Abus.
How oh how am I just finding this channel? Beautiful project! My swag is $12,500-$15,000.
Loved watching you create this piece of art. You are very talented. Not only is it beautiful, but is is one of a kind. I would think it would fetch a handsome sum of money. Shouldn't start any lower than 10K. with the sky being the limit.
This is genuinely a work of art no less than $10000 for sureeeee
I would say with the amount of work and engineering that was put into this should be worth north of 10k US. Albeit a niche market, I think a true collector of unique art would pay it. Is a beautiful piece of work, you should be proud of. I would have a hard time selling if I put that much time into it.
