Live Planted Bioactive Kingsnake Vivarium

  • In this one, I make a new live planted bioactive vivarium for my Blotched Kingsnake, Whodini. It can be challenging to do a setup like this for an animal of this size, but I think I came up with a good solution. He's been in it for a few days now and it seems like everything is holding up very well. Hopefully, it stays that way!
I'm so excited to finally have him in a setup like this. I've been wanted to for years, but I knew it would only work in a large enclosure. That's why I did this setup in a custom-built 72x24x28" (210 gallon) enclosure.

One of my short term goals was to get all of my existing animals into proper enclosures before expanding the animal room. Whodini was the last animal in that group, which means that I can move onto some big things I've had planned for a really long time. I can't wait to share all of that with you. Stay tuned! Until then, enjoy the video and have a great weekend!

The periodic tank updates that you have done for your king snake has probably done more for his mental health than anything. Giving a creature a new habitat to explore is stimulating for them. As a personal opinion. The way you have the tank set up does look pleasing at least to my eyes. It gives you a semi woodland appearance. Thank you for the video; it is an inspiration to all of us animal lovers.

@@Alice-D-23 What's the alternative, put down every animal in the pet trade? You can't release them to the wild. SerpaDesign seems to treat all his pets with great care and consideration for the need of their species.
If you're against the terrible conditions too many pets are kept in through sheer ignorance and the fact anyone can walk into a pet shop and walk out with any animal they see and like, then advocate for more licensing (which should be easy and reasonably priced to apply for) so people have to prove they know how to keep an animal happy and healthy before they are able to purchase that species and can't make impulse purchases of pets with no idea what the animal needs.

You nailed it on this set up. It literally is as close as possible to a natural setting for a Kingsnake as can possibly be in captivity and not outdoors. It quite literally looks like you cut out a section of habitat, lifted in, and placed it in the enclosure without changing it in anyway. WELL DONE MAN.

    • @Leadvest
      @Leadvest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

everybody starts somewhere, at first you don't know enough to know what mistakes you're making, or what you need to learn. But over time as long as you keep at it, things will start falling into place.
It also helps to go back and forth between doing and learning, the text(documentation, textbook, advice) won't make sense without the context of actual practice. If you work without reading you'll waste a lot of time.
Thirdly write stuff down, plan and document your work. There are so many benefits to keeping a hobby journal, and no downsides thanks to all the time it will end up saving.

Have a good spring starting weekend and i love the tank for your snake. I love seeing animals put in as close as possible to a native area.

The planter basket idea is brilliant. And I love the water bowl 😍

    Love the new build.
And I think it should always be the animals needs before ours. It is still possible to have great looks and healthy home for critters, and you show that with every build
    Thank you

Outstanding! Have always wanted to do one for my hognose and bearded dragon but both need arid environs so harder to do anything that isn't basically a desert!

I just made a comment on the community page about this! My bearded dragon destroys all of his plants in his bioactive and I haven't put my hognose in one yet because of logistics (burrowing, risk of respiratory infections, etc). Hope you figure it out!

@@emilymarie9796 haha great timing! They're such awesome reptiles I really feel they deserve as naturalistic environment as poss. My beardy is on sand with lave rock and cork bark around so natural but not bioactive. Damn we clearly need to buy another more tropical reptile for the collections! 😀👍

@@sumpop420 actually I’ve heard that having beardies on sand is really bad for them. It can cause built up an infections.

@@themute9354 this is indeed a concern used to have him on calcisand which I was concerned he did eat now I use zoo-med reptisand which I really like. He also has loads of wood and lava rock he spend most of his time on. He's nearly 18 so clearly loving it 😀

I really like what you've done and it came at a perfect time for me as I'm making a bioactive setup for an E. rubripes centipede.
I was figuring out how to put the plants in and keep them alive since these pedes love to burrow as well, I got to thinking about putting the plants in pots and burying them in the substrate but what you did is next level!
I can't wait to get it done, thanks for all the videos ☺️👌🏼

Long time follower of your work and I appreciated this video! I have been wanting to do a bioactive build for my corn snake who is currently 4 years old and as long as his enclosure. Thanks for being a source of inspiration!
