Absolutely amazing. Think I’m going to build one just like it for my Boa Constrictor. Only thing I’d do differently is to add a door to hide the tub on the end. Excellent work. Thank you for sharing. 🙌🙌
Thanks! Two suggestions if you're going to do a similar build: 1) I'd probably make the tub slide out the front, especially if you're going to make a door to hide it. I wanted it on the side but the front is a lot more practical, and doing it over I'd probably build it for front access 2) For a boa, I'd consider adding more vertical space, and I'd recommend planning an elevated hide. The light compartment gets very hot and doing a vertical heat gradient is easier than trying to project warmth down into the enclosure. My BP is old and arthritic so I didn't want him to have to climb very much, but with a younger, healthy, arboreal snake you could set up a lot of a really cool configurations

I’m happy for Snake😊 I've been using Arcadias Deep Heat Projector with my balls as a night heat source. They come out and bask every single night. They definitely changed their behavior after I provided them with CHE. I highly recommend DHP over CHE. I hook up my dhp to my herpstat 4 with no problems.
Interesting- thanks for the comment. The Snake does come out at night when the lights are off, I just don’t consider that basking. The Arcadia DHP was one of the heat sources I trialed initially with this setup and it just didn’t work very well for me - it seemed very similar to the CHE in output and then burned out within a few days. I may give it another shot if the CHE is struggling once it cools off. The heatwave in my area has been so bad this summer that keeping everything hot enough has not been an issue for the past 2-3 months.

Your one looks like a youngster, nice contrast colors 😃 In regards to basking (or rather no basking) and activity pattern, my young female behaves absolutely the same. No basking, moving between hides or ambush position in the dark part during the day, active after "sun set". Good luck and many more happy years for your BP.

Thank you for the information. I have one hardy ball python yearling who is doing well but recently I rescued an adult. He was living in the most putrid cage I've ever witnessed with zero humidity and only a regular light bulb as heat. Yet seemed okay but missed 2 meals. I cleaned his cage thoroughly. And put new clean reptichip in and THEN he gets scale rot. How he didn't get it in that rotten cage with 50+ separate poos but then gets it within a week in a clean cage with proper heat and humidity! So I'm thinking after it clears up, we are going to go to bioactive for both. Your build was AMAZING! I absolutely love my snakes and want them to have the best lives. Your information is great. Thank you.

The unfortunate reality is I just don't have the time to make this videos in a way where I am not reading from a script (and the lack of recent posts is reflective of the fact I barely have time to make them when I am reading from a script). Since I'm just making these for fun and to be helpful to fellow hobbyists I'm comfortable with my presentation style.
I agree with you, I'm specifically commenting on it because there's an odd trend on reptile related social media recently where primarily nocturnal species have been declared "crepuscular", and then where the newly "crepuscular" species get declared "cathemeral" and then you get a contingent of folks who think that these species are all basically diurnal baskers.

I have drilled ventilation holes with a hole saw into the back of the light compartment to threat the cords inside and then enlarged the holes in the mesh that separates the light compartment from the enclosure so I could fit the probes through those
This is the best, I love love all the educated info. I also have an older ball, more little aged currently. Fantastic enclosure, my 1 question, the water bowl, doesn't your ball like to fully submerge? Mine takes a bath like every 3 months. Swims a little blows his nose underwater. Again thank you
My python doesn't really soak unless the heat is excessive and he's trying to cool off, or if the humidity is too low and he's going into shed, and I have both parameters really carefully dialed in for this setup. He used to soak in his original sterile setup, but I think that's just because it would get too dry. The first bioactive enclosure I made for him before this build (I have videos of it on my channel) had a tub for him to submerge in, but after 18 months of him not using it I just decided to leave it out in this version.
I believe it was Home Depot but it might have been Lowe’s. It has worked very well, I would recommend it as a building material for snake enclosures (might be a bit too porous for insect eating species)
stainless steel wire - I cut it and bend it to make a little horseshoe shaped staple that can be pressed into the backdrop. Creeping plants will generally affix themselves eventually so as they grow you probably won't need to add more unless you're trying to shape the growth.
Lots of folks are claiming they aren't a nocturnal species these days. In my experience with this particular animal he does not like coming out when the lights are on. Not even partial exposure.
I will do spot cleaning as needed to remove urates, fecal material, and shed skins. The vivarium is bioactive so disinfecting or full replacement of the substrate is unnecessary. I do partial replacement of the substrate in the tub once in a while, but I have bioactive organisms there as well.
@ConnorLongDVM sorry, i did see you said dry lock. Dont get that where i live, though. I would like to find an alternative that may be available here. So what is dry lock?
Thanks to your altruistic narcissism, I discovered the hybrid vivarium. Very interesting. I am planning for the vivarium upgrade for my Brazilian Rainbow Boa that had a growth spurt the last 3 months (13 months old today) and its always great to see more ideas.

Well they are nocturnal animals so yes at night they’ll feed better and be more active

How did you heat the tub/hide, love the idea of a area that is easier to keep humidity up
It uses normal heat tape on a thermostat like an old-school rack system. The Snake uses it mostly when he’s going into shed now.
What substrate are you using and the normal/wild type ball pythons are more beautiful than those ugly morphs.
I’m using ABG mix mostly for the plants and then coco chips on top of that for the substrate The Snake is actually in contact with
I want to make something like this for my boa constrictor, yet how does one clean it? Also doesn’t the wood bark get moldy over time?
A bioactive vivarium is largely self cleaning due to plants and detritivores (isopods and springtails) that live within it
