This is somewhat hard to explain but I'll try here...when we get the chance to watch these videos of people working on stuff (repairs, restorations etc) we get a lot more out of it than you may think, Jerry. You and other craftsmen offer up a small part of your life for our benefit. We get to see just how you handle the many issues you are confronted with and what your knowledge lends you in tackling those issues. Best part is...whenever we watch you do your work we all can take small bits and pieces of what we just saw and apply it in our own work (and lives)! I usually catch up early Saturday mornings and watch your videos and I'm never disappointed! I walk away a little smarter. I do have this same old Harmony 4 string Guitar!! i purchased it many years ago from a Guy in Ontario Canada, he said it was used in jamin Bluegrass "get-to-gathers when he and his wife would visit the America. I only purchased because it was a 4 string and it was a yardsale,it also has came unglued at one point in time by looking at it, ty for this great Video ,your craftsmanship and patience with this oldie. Just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your videos and music you add to them. I'm restoring a 1929 Dobro that's been in my family for years. I am the only one in our family that can play it and I've always wanted one, so it's really special to me. It was in horrible shape when I got it, but with the Lord's help, I'm close to finishing. That tune you played at the end, I haven't heard that since I was about 5 years old. My dad used to play and sing it. He got it from an american airman in North Africa during World War 2. Thanks Jerry that bought back a world of memories for me.
Another old classic brought back to life, thanks for sharing this repair Jerry. In my youth, Harmony, Silvertone and Kay guitars were among the accepted inexpensive alternatives to Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, etc. It's good to preserve the oldies from the dumpsters and very few get the repairs that you provide. Having owned and played quite a few of them I have a soft spot for them, even knowing their inherent "cheapness" they are very relevant instruments that taught huge numbers of young musicians! Jerry Rosa I recognize this Guitar it's an H1215T Archtop Jazz Tenor Guitar. The Tenor Guitar is actually a hybrid instrument consisting of a Tenor Banjo neck on a Guitar body, and it was originally meant as a Band instrument. These instruments came around the 1920s during the "Transition period from Banjo to Guitar" so that way Banjoists can get a Guitar sound without having to learn new fingerings.
Marvin Rainwater was from Wichita Kansas. He lost part of his right thumb in a work accident as a teen Agee and that ended his learning to play the Piano. When he was in the Navy he learned to play the guitar. He was half Cherokee Indian. I have come to on your work on repairing the Harmony guitar. It was a nice job. I have been watching a number of your video of repair jobs you have done. I have a guitar that one day I would like to have you work on. It is not in that bad of shape but the fret bird needs to be worked on. I bought it from AlCo in Salina Kansas in 1978. It was discounted because a tuner key was broken. I replaced it but never really liked playing it because it was hard on my fingers. Then later I purchased a used Aspen 12 String and that is what I play mostly. I took the six string into the Guitar Center and had it restrung and they must have put lighter string on it and it didn’t hurt my fingers as bad but the action is to high. It resembles the Gibson Dove guitar. Thanks for sharing your work videos. I really enjoy them. I also enjoyed you adding the music while you fast forwarded your work in parts. Great watching a real artist at work. I grew up listening to records my dad bought for our first record player including a Hits of the year album whose actual name I do not remember, but it had "Cherokee Nation" by Marvin Rainwater who as I recall from reading the album cover is a Native American. Thumbs up Mr. Rosa.

Nice work, Jerry, and a very interesting old Harmony tenor guitar. I inherited my grandfather's 1920's Gibson tenor banjo, and I believe that it tunes to the same notes as a tenor guitar. I had the tenor banjo professionally set up and it's loads of fun to play. It takes a little time to get used to it, but once you break the code (figure it out), they're fairly easy to play. You breathed another hundred years of life into that Harmony guitar, it will be enjoyed by several generations of pickers to come!

I was still in the 182 Mandolin build videos when I saw that you posted this treat, and had to jump ahead to check it out :) I have a Kay K36 6436 4-string Tenor guitar that I rescued and brought back to life, and it was a treat to see you work on its cousin! Mine came back to life pretty easily compared to that Harmony you worked on, but then again, my neck is held onto the body by mere compression lol. I have no idea how lucky I am that mine still plays and looks as good as it does. That Harmony looks like the mandolins you build, finish-wise. I know there are a bunch of different kinds of tuning, but for me, I had to stick with a very simple D-G-B-E since guitar playing is all I know. Easy to play, easy to remember lol. Nice work, Jerry! Now back to the land of mandolin building in the 182 video selections...

When working with cyanoacrylate glue I find that nitrile gloves won't stick to super glue. In fact the glue and the gloves contain the same ingredient. Latex gloves won't work. The blue gloves will keep your fingers from sticking to the work. Many good wishes
Back in the 1950's, a teenager named Brian Rankin had several friends also named Brian, so he used the nickname Hank. He later came up with the surname of Marvin, to honor US-born musician Marvin Rainwater, and the rest is history. Rainwater and his brothers and a sister were all musicians, and Marvin Rainwater went on to record several gold records. "Whole Lotta Woman" went to #1 in the UK. Rainwater was a popular country singer in the 50's & 60's. I got to play lead guitar for Marvin at a gig when I was just 15, and he made a strong, lasting impression with his style & delivery.

Cool, I have the six string model. The body is identical, right down to the faux flame maple back and sides and some of the same repairs. I had to fix cracks at the F holes and fix the back near the tail block. Luckily mine has real inlays though only round ones. I play it in Nashville tuning, sounds very nice.

It has a suprisingly clear tone for an f hole archtop. I would have had a hardtime putting that top back on without scalloping those 2 braces first. Lol. Great job Mr. Jerry
I'm not going to google this but I believe that a tenor guitar is traditionally tuned like the four bottom strings of natural tuning - in otherwords, D - G - D - E. I had a tenor decades ago and it seemed satisfied with that tuning. Having said that I used to tune a cheap mandolin like an ukulele. Cheers.
Really enjoyed the song and that "blues" rainbow thrown in at the end of it! 😆 That song's got potential with a bit of tweaking. Just sayin... ( listened to what I'm calling a "blues" emphasis singing of rainbow at the end more than 5 times; no lie; love it )
I like using John Pearse 450 Tenor Guitar Strings (13, 20w, 30w, 42w) tuned like an Octave Mandolin because Tenor Guitars tend to be tuned rather high at CGDA tuning, and tuning them down a perfect 4th really mellows it out which results in a nice mellow Jazz Guitar sound.
wow those are some heavy duty braces! I had the back off of an old Harmony archtop last week but didn't measure the braces but they didn't look this big. Harmonys are built like a tank! nice work Jerry!
I acquired a Harmony tenor exactly like this one when I worked at an instrument repair shop some years ago. It needed some serious fingerboard work, and I figured that I would have to paint the fake ebony afterwards. Under the paint I found ebony! Why Harmony thought they had to paint an ebony fingerboard black, I'll never know. I still have this instrument, tuned like an octave mando.
Rosa String Works The Archtop & Floating bridge gives it a pretty Jazzy look & sound, which is why they often call it a Tenor Jazz Guitar. You can actually add a Pickup so that recording is easier w/ it.
My Half-Century Silvertone approves. She wants a new nut, bridge and fret dressing. I tell her, "looky here, Geronima, I am no Jerry Rosa!" and she says "coward". Huh. Harmonies and their Sears spawn. I'll look for the "how to make a fret leveler and crowning thingie" video.
Rosa String Works cool video Harmony's are my favorite even though they always have issues some are higher on food chain Rockets Sovereign's are worth money seen those once sell for thousand dollars or more.
Rosa String Works Ever here of tbar truss rods? Martin's 1st truss rod's were tbar truss rods none adjustible then they switched over to tube rods. Sometimes when people reset old Martin neck they'll put carbon fiber rod in the tube rod make it even stiffer. Martin used to add ebony before they had truss rods. How good of quality is hide glue is there advantages to using hide glue?
Yes I've heard of the t bars. Hide glue is good glue. It's more difficult to work with. In my opinion it doesn't hold as well long term as regular wood glue. It becomes brittle overtime cracks and also deteriorates under heat very easily. So if you leave a guitar in a hot car, it may come apart.
Neat little guitar.. It's amazing to me, I have looked at some other builder's video's, and they have all types of fancy tools to radius boards and frets, and you use razor blades, seed oils, patience and skill... I'm sure you own other equipment/tools to use when needed, but I'm just so impressed. Your doing things the way it was done a century ago (without the hide glue).. Keep making these great videos..

A couple days after I saw this my wife brought home from her brothers the almost same Harmony that her dad had played. It has a single binding top and bottom. The tail stock is out of line with the center of the guitar and the tuners have been replaced. The tail stock buzzed on the top. I thought braces were loose but thankfully they are ok. It has been kicked around a lot but somehow still sound. Going to fix it up and see if I can play it. Also I have round inlayed fret markers instead of painted.

Rainwater and his brothers and a sister were all musicians, and Marvin Rainwater went on to record several gold records. "Whole Lotta Woman" went to #1 in the UK. Rainwater was a popular country singer in the 50's & 60's. I got to play lead guitar for Marvin at a gig when I was just 15, and he made a strong, lasting impression with his style & delivery.

Cool, I have the six string model. The body is identical, right down to the faux flame maple back and sides and some of the same repairs. I had to fix cracks at the F holes and fix the back near the tail block. Luckily mine has real inlays though only round ones. I play it in Nashville tuning, sounds very nice.
That sure turned out nice, it has an interesting sound too!

I had the 6 string version of this exact guitar, it was built like a steamer trunk and sounded every bit as good as one too.

It has a suprisingly clear tone for an f hole archtop. I would have had a hardtime putting that top back on without scalloping those 2 braces first. Lol. Great job Mr. Jerry

I'm not going to google this but I believe that a tenor guitar is traditionally tuned like the four bottom strings of natural tuning - in otherwords, D - G - D - E. I had a tenor decades ago and it seemed satisfied with that tuning. Having said that I used to tune a cheap mandolin like an ukulele. Cheers.
Really enjoyed the song and that "blues" rainbow thrown in at the end of it! 😆 That song's got potential with a bit of tweaking. Just sayin... ( listened to what I'm calling a "blues" emphasis singing of rainbow at the end more than 5 times; no lie; love it )
I like using John Pearse 450 Tenor Guitar Strings (13, 20w, 30w, 42w) tuned like an Octave Mandolin because Tenor Guitars tend to be tuned rather high at CGDA tuning, and tuning them down a perfect 4th really mellows it out which results in a nice mellow Jazz Guitar sound.

wow those are some heavy duty braces! I had the back off of an old Harmony archtop last week but didn't measure the braces but they didn't look this big. Harmonys are built like a tank! nice work Jerry!

I acquired a Harmony tenor exactly like this one when I worked at an instrument repair shop some years ago. It needed some serious fingerboard work, and I figured that I would have to paint the fake ebony afterwards. Under the paint I found ebony! Why Harmony thought they had to paint an ebony fingerboard black, I'll never know. I still have this instrument, tuned like an octave mando.
Rosa String Works The Archtop & Floating bridge gives it a pretty Jazzy look & sound, which is why they often call it a Tenor Jazz Guitar. You can actually add a Pickup so that recording is easier w/ it.
My Half-Century Silvertone approves. She wants a new nut, bridge and fret dressing. I tell her, "looky here, Geronima, I am no Jerry Rosa!" and she says "coward". Huh. Harmonies and their Sears spawn. I'll look for the "how to make a fret leveler and crowning thingie" video.

Rosa String Works cool video Harmony's are my favorite even though they always have issues some are higher on food chain Rockets Sovereign's are worth money seen those once sell for thousand dollars or more.

Ever here of tbar truss rods? Martin's 1st truss rod's were tbar truss rods none adjustible then they switched over to tube rods. Sometimes when people reset old Martin neck they'll put carbon fiber rod in the tube rod make it even stiffer. Martin used to add ebony before they had truss rods. How good of quality is hide glue is there advantages to using hide glue?
Yes I've heard of the t bars. Hide glue is good glue. It's more difficult to work with. In my opinion it doesn't hold as well long term as regular wood glue. It becomes brittle overtime cracks and also deteriorates under heat very easily. So if you leave a guitar in a hot car, it may come apart.
Neat little guitar.. It's amazing to me, I have looked at some other builder's video's, and they have all types of fancy tools to radius boards and frets, and you use razor blades, seed oils, patience and skill... I'm sure you own other equipment/tools to use when needed, but I'm just so impressed. Your doing things the way it was done a century ago (without the hide glue).. Keep making these great videos..

Sorry I don't know they're very old. I think they're just run-of-the-mill cabinet scraper set that you can buy at most any woodworking place
love that song just bought a old harmony lapslide 1940 looking forward to give it some love ,not sure if ill sell it yet may have to keep it ,nice restore Jerry looking forward to what you do to it,are you using leather dye?to fill in bad spots?
A couple days after I saw this my wife brought home from her brothers the almost same Harmony that her dad had played. It has a single binding top and bottom. The tail stock is out of line with the center of the guitar and the tuners have been replaced. The tail stock buzzed on the top. I thought braces were loose but thankfully they are ok. It has been kicked around a lot but somehow still sound. Going to fix it up and see if I can play it. Also I have round inlayed fret markers instead of painted.

To be honest I don't remember. It was too long ago. I would just suggest Googling it and you will see the most common tuning.

Not quite sure what you mean by Peg Heats I think you might be referring to the holes for the screws I just put in toothpicks sometimes glue
