The African keyhole garden was designed by CARE in Zimbabwe during the mid 1990s to encourage people to grow their own food

I built one of these with Dr. Deb, who is a very wonderful lady, a bunch of wonderful kids and a few teachers. We started at 9am and completed it at 3pm. It took us four truck loads of cardboard, it was amazing how much fit in there.

Does the center composer have enough volume to heat up and really work? At what volume and rate can you add your kitchen scraps? Thanks

I love this. Do you have to use manure?

You need a 3:1 ratio, 3 brown to 1 green.

Don't cardboard, newspaper and magazines contain abnormal amounts of chemicals used in both the processing and ink - even though they tell you that the ink, for example is "not harmful & environmentally safe"?
While there are about 3000 or so different types of chemicals which "can be used" in paper and cardboard manufacturing, in practice only about 200 individual chemicals are typically used, each satisfying a specific need.
A few examples: Silicate of Magnesia, Alkyl Ketene Dimer, Sulfate of Alumina, Natural Sulfate of Lime, Ammonium Zirconium Carbonate, Anthraquinone, Alkylphenol Ethoxylates, Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride, Barium Sulfate, Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Sodium Hydroxide, ect. etc. etc.
How could using these materials - without laboratory analysis of what is actually in each bed - then qualify for producing a truly "organic" healthful plant to eat? And then throw in the Chinese manufactured cardboard and paper - where they have little or regulation as to what can be used?

The level of the soil in the center around the compost basket should be about a foot higher than the level at the edge of the circle..

Why didn't they talk more about the mechanics of making it?

Excellent. All I need is $400 of pre-cast concrete block and a Central American border crosser to build it for super -ow wages and I can have $24 worth of strawberries in no time !!

Lol ... i thought the same thing ... I priced the number of cinderblocks I would need for the six foot diameter and it would amount to about $100.00 because a Nextdoor.com person gave away some cinderblocks and rocks free. Other sites talking about this method offer other ideas on how to construct this garden more inexpensively than this video. You know the African farmers used whatever they had on hand. I have already spent about $50.00 on chicken wire and stakes, etc. I hope not to spend anymore money and doing whatever I can to use whatever I already have on hand ...
