patty do the smocking is beautiful I hope to do some dresses with the smocking it looks clean tidy and easy to watch it being sewn I can put the dresses on my stall in April and what a lovely top the lady wore thanks lorraine

This is a good tutorial, but it is NOT smocking. It is shirring, a perfectly good technique in its own right. It has`some superficial visual similarities in appearance to the first stage of smocking, but no more.
@charanya11 no one is suggesting the tutorial isn't clear and useful.... but it is definitely not a tutorial for smocking. It is shirring. Smocking is embroidery and was used to gather and decorate fabric long before showing elastic existed
Hello! It was stated here that we need to decrease the needle thread tension but my sewing machine doesn't have one like yours. It does have a tension button but no numbers and I avoid fiddling with it because it messes up my sewing and is hard to fix. Also, my sewing machine only have one stitch, a double stitch. Can I also smock using my sewing machine?

I would highly recommend this tutorial for anyone who has basic sewing machine experience. Her explinations are very thorough and clear.

How do you ensure that your elastic thread lies flat on the bottom? Mine wants to bunch up no matter what settings I put it on...

You should shirr first before taking measurements

yes, it can b done by a simple machine as well. some 40 years back, our mothers also used to do it.

Cute video, but this is shirring... not smocking. Smocking can only be done by hand. It involves no elastic thread either.
