Whilst I appreciate the enthusiasm and just wanting to get the job done, I have learnt the hard way you should always delay and get the right tools for the job. Your health is worth more than saving a few quid.

Awesome project! To anyone reading this who plans to weld, it’s best to fully cover your skin to shield it from the UV created while welding. It is far stronger than the sunlight.

Just pull off the rear bumper and apron and then disconnect the motor from the transmission while having the engine supported on the Jack and pull out. That is how I did my motor replacements. This way was way too complicated but much fun to watch.

I knew there was a simpler way, considering some people do it in about 3 minutes!

Not quite that simple. The rear apron is welded on.

Cool video! Also happy nothing went wrong with removing the engine, it had me worried with those jacks and bricks that you were pushing your luck a bit. I do not want anybody to get hurt.

Glad you guys are putting more content again. This is a carpentry adage but it fits here, "measure twice and cut once." Please be careful you have a wife and child to be around for my friend. I love how you are not afraid to just jump in and do something without fully knowing what you're doing. It is not an insult at all you can't know everything about everything you know. Just try to be safe my friend we need you around. Can't wait to see when you were driving this thing down the highway fully Electric

I appreciate that som people have nostalgia about the old powertrain.
But I suspect that a majority of the complainers about EV conversion, wouldn't mind a fosil engine switch.
Then its not about keeping it original, but about resisting the new and unfamiliar.
I think its a lot better to convert to EV, to make a reliable car to be used regularly, than to keep it as a continuous service project.

I am a welder almost done with school, and I just started to learn how to TIG weld! Good job on your first bead, great timing with your filler metal! It's difficult learning the foot peddle. I loved the van series, definitely watching all of the bug!

It´s always better to unscrew the engine without cranking up the complete Beetle.
The car will stand safe and stable.
Unscrew engine, pull it back and let ist slip down with heatexchangers finally resting on two wooden piles .
Remove wooden piles side by side.
Then you can lift the car at the back much more safe, then before.
    I did it many times.

A bit of wood board should be added under the jack, the bricks may break.

Great episode as usual! Word of warning on the jacking points, they are pretty much only for the original style jack. If you have a trolley jack the best place I’ve found is under the torsion tube cover. I saw someone jack up the jacking point and it went through the floor!
I’ve found a slightly less sketchy way of doing the engine is to actually drop it on to the floor then jack up the car after only to pull it out.

Super. Might be interesting to run the electric motor output to the transmission input, as I don't think I have seen that done before. There has got to be some advantage to having a choice of gear ratios to send the motors output through to the drive wheels. P.S. Teslas use one motor per wheel, not one per car. Good luck. 💙 T.E.N.

I’m all for EV but it’s still kinda sad seeing him mutilate a classic car that someone before had put a-lot of work into maintaining and restoring.

I agree 100%.. Newer generations who never grew up with these old VW bugs just won't get it though- I suspect they'll just see the old ICE motor as "dirty"... It's part of the character of these old cars, and PS: Takes a LOT less resources to build them, and they run completely without computers.. And, good luck trying to get a 50 year old Tesla to run when that day arrives. Mechanical devices, will run forever.

I was an only child until the age of 12. My father expected me to do the job of two men. He would buy a wrecked VW bug, replace the engine, repair the body and sell the car. On several occasions I was assigned the task of pulling an engine................or else. Other wise known as "motivation".
LOL, this video was a painful reminder.
I once told my memories to a man I had just met, as we had dinner. His reponse blew me away. "No man ever wants to hear THAT".

It only requires removing 4 bolts to remove the engine. Why did you not Google this? You made this much more difficult than needed to be.. Four bolts and the entire drive unit comes out. You then separate the engine from the transmission, you then attach the electric motor to the transmission and slip it back into the car. the whole process should have taken less than 1 hour.... with very minimal tools...

    • @doctorsatansrobot
      @doctorsatansrobot ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well that's not really true. 4 bolts... Plus gear linkage, clutch cable, heater cables, fuel line, accelerator cable, wiring, driveshafts...

It's kind of hilarious how many people actually believe that electric vehicles will save the environment when in fact it's actually worse for the environment because of all the mining and fracking that has to happen to get the minerals for the batteries and in reality you're not getting away from using petroleum products because anything that maybe plastic or rubber on the vehicle is made from petroleum you enjoy your electric vehicle I'll keep my gas-powered gas guzzler
