Styling A Juniper Bonsai With Josh.
Welcome Back To Bonsai-En
In todays episode Josh works on some raw material nursery stock which is a Juniper Squamata or sometimes known as a green mound juniper or juniper nana.
When working on this Juniper Bonsai josh takes the first initial steps from taking this tree from raw stock to Bonsai. This includes some initial deadwood work and also some basic wiring to set some branch structure on the tree. There is a few precautions taken though as a lot of foliage is taken off during the deadwood work so some extra foliage was left on the tree in the final result to help the tree recover, however the tree will be reduced some more in its second working after the tree has recovered.

Thanks mate, Yeah it was a lot of work for an initial style. Im looking forward to the second working so i can take a bit more foliage off and begin on the Shari Work.
Love your videos, just got my, first Juniper Bonsai as a gift and I plan on creating more from stock as I learn. Question what size is that wire looks really thick and is it very hard to get it off when the wood dries out and is more brittle?

josh when or what month is it best to cut branches and prune im in brisbane and should i repot in spring
Need to add deadwood down the trunk and delineate a live vein(s) and I'd also thin out all the little deadwood up top...or most of it. It's to busy with all the little pieces. Also, I don't find wiring deadwood after stripping it really works in the end. Adding new tissue growing in the desired position first will ensure the deadwood stays before stripping. Liked it vid tho. Keep it up bro
A Shari is coming after the next growing season, due to the amount of foliage removed from the tree we don't want to stress it to much. Also with wiring deadwood it will have a wood harder applied to help give it rigidity in its place.
I really like how you wired the deadwood. I have not seen that before! I really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. My question is about wiring the Deadwood. How long do you need to leave the wire on until it is trained into the position you wanted? Is it less time than it is for a regular branch? Thanks!
Hi Tia, The dead wood wont need the wire on too long, If the dead wood needs a little extra movement i will generally wire it in too place right after i strip the bark while the branch is still flexible with moisture in it. Then i will allow the deadwood to dry for a few weeks and at this point it will harden off. At that time i will apply the lime sulphur to stain it bone white.
You do have to watch it doesn't cut in though 😜

It's called a crean mate. We stock them at Bonsai-En and they usually sell out super quick. Hopefully I will have more in stock soon.

My friend I looked up Fly Ash and it says its almost like concrete when mixed with water. Is this the material you are talking about?
there is a similar product to Fly Ash which is called enviro Aggregate which is crushed concrete, Fly Ash is a by product from power stations. We are lucky to be able to get it clean and in small particle sizes, when buying from anywhere else it will need a good wash and will generally be much larger particles. id suggest finding something else like scoria or perlite.

How long does it take to go from this to a bonsai pot?
i will be able to pot this up in the coming spring, in fact it is the only move now as the tree has reached its growth needed on the trunk, main branch and deadwood. Now once we move the tree into a Bonsai pot we can put it in an in organic substrate and grow a finer root system and start refining the tree. the work performed in this video was merely setting the basic structure of the tree. Id say 4-5 years and it will be a show tree.
