Four-way Switches & How They Work

  • Four-way switches are used any time when more than two switches are needed to control a light. This presentation shows the internal workings of the four-way switch and how it works with three-way switches, allowing a light to be controlled from three different locations. As for the software used, it was something I created for the occasion. When I can't find what I want, I usually will write my own. I was still using Windows... some at this time. I am now 100% Linux OS user now.

You published this about 14 years ago, and in 2 minutes 32 seconds, you have covered so much that other videos, books are taking tens of minutes, tens of pages to cover but not getting their point accross like you are doing. I especially like the way you give example of 100 switches and how they should be...THANK YOU so MUCH...

This is the best explanation without pre asking for 2 minutes to subscribe and notify and then 30 seconds of instructions of what you're going to explain and then an intro graphic with annoying music.
    Love it! Thanks!!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I've been trying to learn this for 20 years. I got it done just guessing. This finally helped me understand the inner workings. Your "xray" view of how it works made ALL the difference.

I first considered a tutorial on wiring 3-ways and 4-ways and saw that others have already done that. Then I realize what was needed was an explanation on how and why the switches work as they do. Once people understand this, the other tutorials on actual wiring become more clear.

Thank you for this video. I work at a hardware store, but find myself unable to wrap my head around this concept when my boss explains it to me verbally. With your visual representation, I can now explain to customers how exactly these switches work. I also watched your video on three-way switches prior to this, which was also wonderful and easy to understand.

Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I've watched a bunch of others that show how to WIRE for a 4-way switch but none of them showed how the switch actually works internally. Now that I see this video it is 100% perfectly clear to me how this all works. Now that I UNDERSTAND how it works I don't have to memorize how to wire it. It just makes sense now so I can wire it based on my understanding rather than based on memorizing wire colors/positions. Thanks again!

I do love to teach but I am actually an industrial electrician. My father always told me if I put the cookies on the shelf where four graders can reach them, then I don't have to worry about intellectuals understanding me. I am an analytical type of person who tends to visualize everything and I always try to find metaphors when explaining things. I been told all my life I should have been a teacher. I believe my ability to visualize and my background in electronics etc has help me a lot when it comes to troubleshooting in my trade. Interesting fact, I am not good at auditory input. If you call out a phone number, you may have to repeat it several times but I tend to remember what I read. I suspect if the brain is wired for one strength, it may often come at at a cost at another ability.

THANK. YOU. I am currently attending a Trade School (GI Bill FTW) and my main class is dealing with basic safety and electrical basics. The homework my instructor gave included pictural schematics of common electrical components with directions to WIRE them from a CB source. Most of them are some combination of plugs, switches and a lamp. But three of them are this kind of switch set up. There was nothing in the book specifically to this and although the UGLY's book had the schematic layout, they don't specifically explain WHICH POSTS get which wires, which was driving me nuts (I just wasn't SEEING IT). I'm not 100% certain I drew it correctly, but I at least understand it more in a functional manner. Again, Thank. You. Sir.

In the UK we call this two way switching, the logic being that the switch has two positions, common to 1 and common to 2, 1 and 2 being the travellers/strappers, or you can have a switch in two positions ie at the bottom of a stairs, and one at the top [switching in two positions] the 4 way switch we call an intermediate switch. you call it a 4way switch [by using 2 -3 way switches combine] therefore using your logic name, it should be call a 6way switch!
    However the names don't matter!
