I completely agree, it is the most beautiful part of the mass indeed ! So beautiful and full of mystery ! And the only part, where Beethoven actually used an old church mode, the lydian mode, to evoke the old style of Palestrina, whom he considered the greatest of all composers of sacral music. The flute with its wonderful thrills symbolizes the Holy Spirit descending upon the Blessed Virgin Mary giving flesh to the divine redeemer.
Stupendous music. I hadn't heard this Missa Solemnis before now, and I'm glad I have heard it now. I very rarely listen to Beethoven , as although I love the music of at least 300 classical composers , I tend to dislike Beethoven's music, and it's a sort of illness of mine. But, I am fighting to get over this strange aversion, and this Missa Solemnis is probably the best cure. It really is fabulous, and I'll try and listen to it again.
I was just reading that apparently it's one of his most atypical major works as it doesn't develop any themes, it's just one continuous unfolding, so you might be right that its the best way to start. Other ways in might be 'the late quartets' and the piano sonatas as they are not 'thunderous theme hammers' unlike some of the symphonies, which I think you can enjoy only very occasionally after a while!

Magnificently beautiful. This great music is miraculous. Indeed, considering it was written by a deaf man, it a miracle in every sense. Hail Beethoven! His music will live until the Universe ceases to be. How truly great he was and still is and will always be.
This was Beethoven's Op. 123. I think his choral writing in the Missa Solemnis was a factor in his decision to add vocalists to Op. 125, the Ninth Symphony.
This is a giant masterwork, no question. How much is it a religious work or a gigantic choral symphony is for the experts to resolve. The Benedictus seems to me to recover the old JS Bach religious atmosphere; the solo violin playing up there against the choir and the soloists seems taken from some of the liturgical cantatas, the celestial atmosphere, the humility of humans confronted with the divine, the majestic benediction from the Holy Ghost onto the human herd, it is nothing less than a work of art of the highest magnitude. Thanks for this wonderful music and splendid video.
Someone in the classical music recording biz once told me Leonard Bernstein said this was the greatest piece of music ever written. I wish Bernstein had left some kind of analysis of the mass that explains that opinion (if this is true).
Nothing in Beethoven's missa solemnis has any thing to do with Bach.... where Bach is a predetermined Christian while Beethoven a Free spiritual Genius who has created and expressed his own spirituality using his music regardless the traditional text he used to achieve that
Prof. jason- , absolute clarity professor? That first part-if taken literally-is preposterous. Just because the church controlled western music pre baroque and throughout the baroque period doesn’t mean it’s composers didn’t influence music of the romantic period. It’s everywhere. Rather the nature of music: all music is influenced by music. I hear what Jorge is hearing. Consider the Allegro energico e passionato from Brahms 4. A symphonic passacaglia.
Professor Jason, thanks for your comment. It is true that Beethoven was not a devoted religious man, agree 100%. However, that was precisely the gist of my comment, that asked if the Missa Solemnis was in fact a religious work rather than a giant choral symphony. We do know that Beethoven while composing the Mass studied Bach religious compositions. Beethoven fugues are clearly inherited from Bach. Nothing to be ashamed about; music is a long story fo heritage and progress growing on the shoulders of older musicians.
So beautiful and so passionately performed ! 2016 was an important year for many Folks , including me. While as an oldster I prefer the attitudes and tempi of mid-20th century, I am convinced that Beethoven and other Greats yet RING TRUE.

A remarkable Masterpiece! What made it even more remarkable was that in 1818 were the first signs of deafness and worsened by the time Missa Solemnis was completed in 1823 by which time he was totally deaf! To pay tribute to the greatness of Beethoven, this Orchestra, Choir and Conductor have done just that!
The chorus in St Petersburg was a magnificent one, with a grounding in Italian bel-canto. That explains the challenging choral writing -- it was not composed with an "average" chorus in mind.
“No compassion for the range of singers,” is an interesting comment for someone to make about anything to do with Beethoven, As an amateur violinist, I can tell you the same can be said about him with regard to his works for violin. But then, those of us who love and have come to know Beethoven’s opus know of his ferocity, even in quiet episodes in his various works, There is passion, a tautness, of barely contained energy that we know is going to erupt sooner or later. Beethoven composed not to coddle his musicians but to evoke from and with them that which is sublime, at the limits of the soloists, the choruses, the orchestras, the ensembles that dare to try to bring his compositions to life
The Maestro conducts a great performance. About as meticulous as one could hope for in a live performance of this piece. The Singverein, to my humble ears, sounds greatly improved over recordings under Karajan a few decades ago. Great depth and tenor section never sounds too strained. The composition seems to say everthing there is to say (although that can't be right, it often seems to me that way when I am in a receptive mood).
When Beethoven was composing this glorious work, a friend who was a painter (Joseph Carl Stieler) wanted to show him holding the score of his Missa Solemnis. He asked Beethoven, by writing down the question , so we have that record, which page he wanted it to be open at. Beethoven's emphatic answer is there for all the world to see: 'Credo!' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven
Kloster Eberbach is never an ideal place to perform such a magnificent masterpiece. But all performers have done their best to dedicate their respect to the greatest and absolutely incomparable composer.

Your right. The flautist is absolutely brilliant! Maybe your interested her name is Clara Andrada de la Calle. Check her out doing a flute concerto of Sibelius with the same orchestra. You would like it.
You could check Clara Andrada out performing Nielsen flute concerto
I had inadvertently said Sibelius concerto. It should be Nielsen concerto

No doubt the way these events are filmed is a work of Art on itself.
Does anyone else agree that the section beginning at 33:00 is possibly the most beautiful music they’ve ever heard? I don’t know if I’ve ever heard anything more beautiful.
Definitely an astounding moment : "Incarnatus est"and what follows up to the 'et resurrectus est" is extraordinarily moving,
Yes I was literally just thinking that. So beautiful
"Missa Solemnis, I just do not know higher masterpiece in whole Music". Lorin Maazel
The Greatest Mass of Humanity
The Adagio...I'm speechless!
QUANDO L'ASCOLTO, MI SENTO CHE SALGO NEL PARADISO. GRAZIE DI QUESTA MERAVIGLIOSA MUSICA.CHE CI A DATO, IL GRANDISSIMO LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN ❤❤🎉
Sublime!!!, Grandioso!!! ...'it is not the ear that hears, but the mind'...Ploetinus- Credo Amen,et vitam venturi saeculi, Amen¡¡¡
As a 100% Atheist, I must admit I love this. Thank you Beethoven. It's an honour to be able to share this beauty.
Me too💕

MultiCappie. I'm not an atheist but severely tested on my faith almost disintegrated so
..I can see how one can become Atheist as some talked of Beethoven
as an Atheist too much suffering can turn one that way ,i dont think
he attended Church in the strict way but Beethoven Catholic by Birth
, but certainly his inner souls knowing and expression talks to one from the heart
of some divine majestic being of creation
But yes In agreement .with you with reference to this musical
masterpiece a totally sublime works indeed 🌟
Thank you for your great sacrifice born out of much earthy
suffering yet you rose above it dear Beethoven💞
and again I give grateful thanks to you 💞
For me, the Missa Solemnis is Beethoven's Magnum Opus. And this may well its finest performance!
Merci mille fois! Thanks to all! 🙏🏼
I am deeply moved by your respect for this piece , which always strikes Awe in me 🙏 ... send me your email address and I will send you my Christmas 🎄 Card which celebrated his 250th birthday on Thursday (12/17/1770). bachgolf@gmail.com. With All Due respect 🎻🎶🎹
Jorge Urzua Urzua , my God Jorge. How I’d enjoy a beer with you. Forget the experts. Who is more feeling and eloquent than you, man.
Nothing in Beethoven's missa solemnis has any thing to do with Bach.... where Bach is a predetermined Christian while Beethoven a Free spiritual Genius who has created and expressed his own spirituality using his music regardless the traditional text he used to achieve that
Prof. jason-
, absolute clarity professor?
Gran compositor, gran Coro, gran orquesta, gran director, gracias por compartir esta maravillosa obra de arte!!!!! Es sublime llega al alma,‼ saludos desde Chile🎶🎼💚🇨🇱
Fantastic music and amazing interpretation. Thanks Beethoven for this moment!!!
This makes me weep! All the performers were great--Steve Davis Lim at his best! It was my great joy to have met him some 25 years in Sydney Opera House--he sang Strauss's 4 last songs, etc. We were both from Malaysia. Dear Steve, we are all waiting for your memoir! It will inspire present and future singers.
Excellent! Thank you...
The first signs of deafness in Beethoven occurred long before 1818.
Your right. The deafness began in 1798 when Beethoven was 28 years old. 3 years later in 1801 he lost 60 percent of hearing.
Thanks for correcting me.
Sublime soloists... just delightful!
Beethoven wrote with such intensity but had no compassion for the range of singers, but nevertheless, the power of his music always comes out!
The chorus in St Petersburg was a magnificent one, with a grounding in Italian bel-canto. That explains the challenging choral writing -- it was not composed with an "average" chorus in mind.
Caroline Unger said he was a tyrant of voices.
Beethoven composed not to coddle his musicians but to evoke from and with them that which is sublime, at the limits of the soloists, the choruses, the orchestras, the ensembles that dare to try to bring his compositions to life
well said!!!@@Geoplanetjane
That’s old Beethoven for you -asking for fortissimos at breakneck speed at the very top of your vocal range -no slouchers please.
Wonderful acoustics and video direction. Music also taken at exciting tempi.
Realmente divino. Beethoven é incomparável.
Sobrenatural!
Beethoven e suas divinas obras e inspirações......
Grandiosi non ho mai ascoltato una esecuzione a questi livelli.
I really that piece of Beethoven, that was the first song in Beethoven's movie Immortal Beloved, very beautiful
It seems most appropriate for Lent.

This works of Beethoven truly transcendental. like the transfiguration 💞
Beethoven's Magnum Opus, in my opinion. And that is saying a lot, given the quantity of great music he produced.

Only comparable sacred works I know are Bach's Bminor mass, Mozart's C minor Mass, and Monteverdi's Vespers.
What about Brahms Requiem

The Gloria is just magnanimous!
Muy buena música, muchas. Dios los bendiga.
When Beethoven was composing this glorious work, a friend who was a painter (Joseph Carl Stieler) wanted to show him holding the score of his Missa Solemnis. He asked Beethoven, by writing down the question , so we have that record, which page he wanted it to be open at. Beethoven's emphatic answer is there for all the world to see: 'Credo!'

Admirable interpretación. El "Dona nobis pacem" sobrecoge.
Kloster Eberbach is never an ideal place to perform such a magnificent masterpiece. But all performers have done their best to dedicate their respect to the greatest and absolutely incomparable composer.
Can you explain why?
Probably because of horizontal stricture of this historical cloister.
The acoustics in Eberbach is an absolute desaster. Nice for plainchant from the middle ages but not for anything complex or polyphonic
Why have they chosen it then?
+ShorkGamer Good question. its part of the Rheingau Fesival.. They lack locations with adequate acoustics.. its a beautiful basilika but just no good at all as a concert venue.
Wundervoll💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏
Hora y media de pura maravilla.
Immensely beautiful but so intricate and at times outlandish that it isn't for everyone. In today's world of tweets and compromised attention span, few are the lucky ones who experience the exquisite pleasure of listening to all of it. Truly speaking, it's my favorite Beethoven work, his choral and orchestral cenith, superior to the 9th symphony.
Yes, it is superior to the wordly, anti-Christian IX., though a magnificient musical work in itself.
Carlos Bas .. I agree
