      The captain does nothing while the rest of the crew work like slaves. Captain also pockets the budget for food whilst the crew eat adobo and ramen every day. Interesting stories from inter island ships in the Philippines or inter south east Asia shipping.

    Finding a good "team" is the most important part of any success. Whether it be at home or on the high seas. "The Captain runs the ship, but the Chief makes the ship run" Truer words were never spoken.

      I second that! I was a Gas Turbine Systems tech in the US Navy. I started the process of college at sea and working with my ship's chief engineer to eventually become an LDO chief engineer. That changed after a couple of years of standing a 6 hour watch on the power generation system, working 6 hours, then standing another 6 hour watch, then if nothing is broken getting a few hours sleep was simply too much. I was never going to be able to become a chief engineer under those conditions. Theree were only 3 of us to do the job of 12 including standing watch and working. That personal shortage was never going to be fixed. No one in my rate stayed in due to the high paying jobs available like the one I got outside the military.

    Recently I came across your TH-cam channel Chief. I am a lifelong landlubber from the Midwest in the USA and your videos have opened for me an unknown world of the real operations of the Merchant Marine. I am retired and too old to set off to sea for a career, but your explanations of the hard work and technical knowledge necessary for keeping a ship healthy are greatly appreciated. I am retired US Army and I can say beyond a doubt that you are the type of professional that I always enjoyed serving with. Thanks.

    I don't like it chief when people hate others for the sole reason that they belong to scholarship program or a certain school. They label people first before they get to know them which put us in defensive(cautious position) at all times. Then again we try to understand these people as fellow human beings and as a crewmate while trying protect our own reputation.

      Yeah i meet many bad C/E from germany company, when i was a apprantance for 3yrs, thats makes me leave that path.

    • @GoonRider19
      @GoonRider19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @James Fox yea i would work for him too. The other people from Western Countrys get sour, when the get old, because they wife leaved them with there children and all things he worked for. They cant leave the ship, because they will not find a job ashore. Than when u are a cadet or 3E or 2E under the lead of a bad C/E, u will get some treatment from him. If u have a good captain and a good C/E, C/O, the Crew will work better and the time will move fast. I love the life of a seaman, but u never know what kind of Cap, C/E and C/O u will get. With the bad people the time on the ship will move slowly and everyday will be a Drama. I can handle that for all my life 🤣

    • @GoonRider19
      @GoonRider19 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @James Fox i did my apprenticeship, when i was 18-21yrs. i got that bad treatment in my early yrs, but that time really helped me for the rest of my life. Now i study horticulture, but i still miss the good time on the ship and the 1 1/2 month of vacation 🤤🤣

    • @GoonRider19
      @GoonRider19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @James Fox I worked on Container vessels (Hapag Lloyd). The biggest vessel i worked on was the Antwerpen Express. I was a apprentance to become a shipmechanic, my duties where to learn everything, so i worked everywhere from the engineroom to the bridge to the forwardstation to aftstation. From the 2yr of apprenticeship u can take over the Position from the shipmechanic, even u r not finished. The shipmechanic is like a housekeeper. The shipmechanic have to keep a view over the stores from Kitchen stuff to Deck stuff, office things, engine things, all the small things u need on a daily Basis. He have to give the Crew the things they need, keep Recorder and order things for the store. Also he will fix things, like a lightbulb, a cupbrush or mooringwinch or hydraulic from the gangway or lifeboatdavid. The sewage treatment system is also one duty of the dutys, running, maintaning, repairing and cleaning it. But just to let u know, shipmechanic is a tradion from germany, so other Countrys dont have this Position, thats why a shipmechanic have a double licence for Deck (AB) and engine (Oiler) on a international point of view. Befor in germany u have to make that apprenticeship to be able to study nautic or Engineering. That means every captain and C/E have to work on Deck and engine, there where no short cut, now u can make a Training for 1 1/2 yr and go study and become a captain without even one time working in the engine, maybe for 2 weeks. In one ship we worked a lot on the Main engine, pulled 8 pistons of 12 in total, cleaned the scavengingairpipe 2 times, checked the pistonrings, checked the hydraulic of the startingairvalve of each cylinder, checked the gap of the crosshead guides and checked the camshaft and the fuelpump. Then there was still things to do one the auxiliary engine. we had oil in the coolingwater and so we have to find the leak, we had to pull some cylinderheads to find that one firering was not in the right Position. 2 weeks job for just a ring. Thats was the biggest Jobs one my Last ship and the voyage was just 2 month. But every Panama chanel Passing i was on anchorewatch in the forward or at the bridge. sometimes the job is very easy, at anchorwatch u could lay in the sun or on bridge ploting the Position, writing the mooring book and bringing the Pilot Coffee.

    • @GoonRider19
      @GoonRider19 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @James Fox no u dont have bad weather, if u have a good captain. U are faster or slower than the storm, so the weather dont hit u. Sometimes there is bad weather, but its just pissed me of, when i ate my soup or rolled in my bed. The deck Crew is constantly working with cupbrushes or rustpistol and painting 1-2 Primer and 1 finisher, so there is rust, but not that much. Its a german company so they work hard in chinese or Indian ships its a diffrent Story. The anchore is Big, but everything is Big in the ship, so u get used to it. I dont really care, because the electrican is checking the winch regularly. Now I study horticulture, i'm in the 5 Semester. Later i want to work in landscape design/ Urban Design or join the cannabis buisness. I have still some other idears for the future. I like this chanel and there is another one (one young asian from canada, jeff?) I like to watch documentare at arte, its a france/ german TV chanel, i think u can translate thit.

    You're an inspiration sir. I'm a cadet and experienced life at sea for 13 months. I'm not from PMMA though (guess I'm not smart enough😂). The thing is. . . . I'm not sure if I want to pursue this career. I fell off the ship but by the grace of God I got saved. I had no injuries whatsoever but that experience left a scar on my mind. I think I'm traumatized to be onboard again but I'm afraid to admit it to myself and my family. It's hard when they expect a lot from you. Seafaring really is not easy. I just want to pass by and say that I respect all seafarers out there risking their lives for their family. More power!

    Some time ago I discovered your channel, Chief Makoi, since I discovered your channel I watch each and every one of your videos daily.
    I will soon start my life on board as a marine engineer, and watching your videos are a great motivation for me.
    Keep it up, I'm sure that you are not only a motivation for me, but for each and every one of us who follow you.

    I'm currently a Junior cadet and with that being said I am the ONLY Female Engineer in such a male dominated field you've truly inspired me to pursue more and strive for excellence. As you mentioned discrimination is real sir, if you don't stand your ground you will be demolished especially as a female. (ruin of reputation just to name a few). You're an inspiration sir. Thank you so much Chief, all the best to you and your family.

      Good one girl! Also may I ask a question? How do you get a company to accept you as a cadet? I am going to apply to a naval academy and I don't know the process.

    • @tinaadd6787
      @tinaadd6787 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@nikolaslavov3498 To answer your question.. you must be recognized in a Maritime School or institution ,it all depends on your path of interest...
      BS in Engineering can take up too four years, with getting the experience of operating various hydraulic systems , different engines just to name a few.
      However, after attending the academy or institution for the amount of years then you would take your necessary examinations .. and you are well on your way.After passing that phase you would take your medical examination authorize by the company you are going to work for . Ensuring that you have your US C1/D visa ( if you aren’t a US or Canadian Resident) also be able to pass a criminal background check. Moral of the story you must have some experience or be equipped with knowledge ma’am/sir.

    Great video- Great story. Having spent 5 months (1965) at Kings Point,I can totally respect you for achieving your goals. My Father's 30 year career as chief on Grace Line cargo/passenger combo's taught me a lot about life in the merchant marine. The look on your wife's face picking you up at the airport brought back many memories. Spend as much quality time with your Family as you can. Any cadet who gets assigned to your ship is a lucky guy. I am looking forward to your videos.

    I see your professionalism flows through all things in your life, including video production. As a retired marine engineer I'm encouraged to see that dedication and hard work are still being rewarded in the maritime community. Our stories match up almost exactly chapter for chapter. Including the Second Assistant rough patch. After sailing thirty years, I can tell you the best is yet to come. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

    We learned in your more recent videos that you returned to teaching for a while, albeit not at the Academy. I think that this combination of real work in the bowels of ships and teaching is ideal, both for you (giving you an opportunity to combine better paid stints at sea with that of transferring your knowledge and experience while being with your family) and for your students, who get to learn from someone with lots of fresh practical experience, not only theoretical knowledge.

    Thank you Chief! I started to love tankers and ships when I became a petroleum inspector here in the Philippines, and had my first taste of living on board tankers. As a non-mariner, I have seen and experienced the good and the bad sides of being a seafarer.
    Kudos, and hope to meet you, Sir!

    • @pappustheorem

      @Alex Fracyon true. And it would be a disservice to speak otherwise. I had been blessed that I can be onboard at a max of 20 days at the most, then back onshore, but to the seasoned seafarer it is more on the months and weeks and days away from the family.

    Your videos ring a special place in my heart. My father sails the seas, starting as a wiper on a Liberty ship in 1942. He rose up to Chief Engineer by 1953, and sailed until the later 1960's. I briefly remember him taking us aboard his ships when we would meet him in the harbors along the Gulf of Mexico (we lived in the USA). But I did not have a real understanding of his job and work environment until we found your series of video "Life at Sea". Thank you very much for educating us and letting us know how great he truly was. Keep up the great videos.
