Since it seems like this should work with any item a villager can buy, I think this means shepherds finally have a use, since they can potentially buy any color dye. This also makes color coding the transit system directly intuitive, and most dyes are pretty easy to get in survival so you can just have chests of items for players to use at each endpoint.
Shepherds do have a use if you have a fuckton of wool and have an efficient sheep farm. It's great for starter emeralds. But other than that nothing else lol
it's unfortunate that this only works during the day, I'm not sure if I'd ever use something like this in survival. As an idea, can a sculk sensor detect a wolf begging for food, or another animal reacting to a held item?
For a network, could use this as a “ticket” system where the item you’re holding is the destination. Villagers at intersections give off signal for their destination, so you just hold one item the whole time. Might be impractical for larger networks since if there are many routes, would need more villagers at each intersection. Would be very cool to see that work though.
My first idea with this was for redstone game controls, often they have you press buttons or move around onto pressure plates, but because you can switch hotbar slots with the number keys this would allow you to control a game with only keyboard presses.
Indeed. At first I thought, maybe it will work in the nether/end all the time but unfortunately villagers are affected by day/night cycle no matter what
Subbed! (For this video) I’ve been looking for a way to switch tracks (the server I play just did a map reset for a new season), last “season” I had rails to several neighbors, and I thought that the redstone was going to be complicated, but this looks pretty simple. (We were just placing the minecarts down at specific spots then going forward onto a powered email 😂😂😂😂
so for the sake of hiding the villagers in vanilla... if they were to become zombies and pick up leather armor, then become cured, will that stop powder snow damage? if so, you could hide them inside powder snow blocks in theory
Zombies can wear armor, yes. But as far as I know and have tested, villagers and zombie villagers cannot equip armor. You could technically hide the villager completely by burying it in any non-solid block, but then the sight-line to the player would be blocked. And a villager has to have an unobstructed sight of the player for this feature to work.
@@michael23b Could one not use a piston to shove glass over the villagers head to protect them and still allow them to see? Also do the villagers detect items in ones off hand to allow for more complex circuts where two villagers need to see the two seperate items to trigger an and gate?
@@DailyNightmares100as I said, a villager has to have an unobstructed line-of-sight to the player for the feature to work. A glass block, even though it appears completely transparent, would block that line-of-sight to the player if they’re inside it. However as you can see in the piano segment of the video, some of the villagers have stairs at their heads but they’re still able to see me. As for offhand items, yes I believe villagers see those
This is the most impressive innovation I've seen come from minecraft (including those in-game computers and art generators). Good job Sarc, I'm very impressed.
I had a similar system, but it was a lot less compact and worked using animals. Animals won’t really pull against a tether, unless you have their preferred food (at least not when I built the system, it’s been a long time since I played). It didn’t matter if you didn’t have line of sight. I was always surprised that I’ve still never seen anyone else use that system, so his is the closest I’ve seen.
I love the creativity in this design and I think it has potential ❤ but one glaring downside is that you have to hold quite a niche item that no one would have in their hotbar, which is unfortunate. (unless you're going to a trading hall) other than that it's a really good system that both looks cool and stupidly hilarious at the same time 😂
I knew about this mechanic but never thought of this particular use... This is frankly quite amazing. It's such a shame that it does not work at night. At least for me, that's quite a deal breaker... But it would be so cool 🤣 Also I feel like shepherds can trade dyes, that would be so perfect for color-coded metro systems.
Hey Michael! Love the enginuitie! I represent a small community of content creators, and was wondering if you'd be interested in joining us for our second season of our SMP, Craftopia! We would love to have someone with your talents on the server and if it's something you'd be interested in hearing more about, just let me know! 😁
Do villagers react to mobs holding items? For example: could you detect a fox that spawned holding an emerald, or maybe an allay holding a preset item? If this works with the allay, it could even be used to make an automatic villager occupation sorter
In theory could you not have V#1 with 4 items (gold, diamond, iron&emerald), then if you hold one of those is sends you to another intersection with V#2 wanting gold, V#3 wanting diamond, V#4 wanting iron and V#5 wanting emerald
@@bonbonbonbons yeah probably but i’ve thought about it more andır wouldn’t be able to increase the speed without commands so that’s a big issue like it wouldn’t ever get very hard but i’ve thought about making it myself as just like a short segment of track on a survival world between two builds as just as a little gimmick
Yes, you can put them up at ground level. Keep the villagers in the minecarts, move the sculk sensor directly beneath the block they’re sitting on, and be careful to use wool blocks around the sides of the sensor so only the villager directly on top can trigger that one. The minecarts are more so to keep the villagers from moving about, but also you don’t want some empty minecart accidentally coming along by and carrying away your switchmen.

man, what a clever use-case for this mechanic! sarc is always good for some inspiration. …you know, when he’s around.
Sometimes I wonder what amazing Railway systems we would see on SMPs if it wasn't for the elytra
Agreed, and ground transportation is more fun anyway.
If Mojang were to ever increase the speed of rails, that might do it too
@@mystic-malevolence it would tragically mess with hopper minecarts, which is a general no-no, since tons of redstone revolves around them
Minecarts can in fact go faster already. That is how piston bolts work. And some smp's use them @@mystic-malevolence
@@raymondstheawesome iirc, that's more of teleporting the minecart between many rail blocks than moving along the rails.
Wonder if the auto ice boat rail system could also be tied in with this villager technology. This is crazy, but its just the start.
I mean maybe but at that point you might as well use that the one that was already made using chest boats so you can go fully afk.
I think this is one of the coolest mechanics
it's unfortunate that this only works during the day, I'm not sure if I'd ever use something like this in survival. As an idea, can a sculk sensor detect a wolf begging for food, or another animal reacting to a held item?
No, but sculk does detect a wolf shaking itself dry after getting wet. That’s not very useful here though
You can bypass that by only being able to enter the rail system normally if its daytime, or otherwise through a bed.
@@Predated2The bed is a good idea. It sadly won't work on the vast majority of servers though
i kind of love how thematically the rail system only functions during "working" hours

This is super cool! When I first saw it in action I thought it was magic or had to be using commands or something.
This is a really cool tech that I can defiantly see helping in a lot of other contraptions - thanks for the video!

one step closer to making warhammer in minecraft... we now have biological components to mechanical machines
