    Ceiling height is probably the limiting factor for 90% of home woodworkers.

    • @rextored

      why? I have an 8 x 6,5ft room for my workshop, but the ceiling is 11,6 ft. The only advantage I had with my ceiling is when I had to build a ladder. Althought I have my stock stored vertical and now thinking about storing horizontal over my head.

    Vertical does warp boards more. Had an issue so I lay it down now with fewer problems. Depends on the humidity swings in your area.

    I always went vertical simply for the ease of use, but in shops I’ve been in with horizontal storage I notice significantly more bowing. You have to be vigilant about appropriate spacing of your racks to properly support longer boards, and you have to be careful about keeping everything neat and tidy so there isn’t too much weight on top of other material

    Do you rest the ends directly on the concrete floor? I have heard that is a problem with respect to wicking of moisture up from the floor...

    • @elmohead
      @elmohead ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on where you live. In Australia, concrete absorbs moisture because the ground is drier than concrete. In England it's the other way around afaik.

      You could maybe get a silicone mat and put it under the boards. Or an even cheaper option might be a roll of plastic or tarp type thing.

    Trees grow with rings, it is the equivalent of gluing opposing grin together to stop warping!
    They also grow is such a way as to maintain the centre of gravity above the trunk.
    Not saying you are wrong, just that the tree is not the best example!
    I've also had a 7ft walnut board vertically stored for about 3 years. Still straight. I think it depends on stable humidity.

  • @jercubsfan

    The only problem is when you have limited floor space. I have a one-car garage and basically HAVE to put my lumber horizontal on the wall if I want to have any amount of lumber on hand and still have tools in the garage.

    I wish my shop had higher ceilings and I'm limited to ~7'... I'm forced into horizontal wall storage for my good lumber, but I make do and have mine above a general work counter on one side of the shop. Construction lumber/trim/panels/etc. are kept in a separate store room, also with horizontal racks. All racks are 16" on center to match up with studs and prevent bowing.

    hi. my workshop is 8 x 6,5 ft. But one side of my ceiling is 11,6 ft in height. I was thinking about horizontal storage but it would be above my head and tools, that's scary. But keeping my stock vertical is taking 47" x 19" off my floor space. Which option would you think it's better under these circumstances?

    So instead of JUST taking up wall space, you take up floor space as well... I don’t know about you, but I still can’t put anything on the wall if I have an 8 foot board sticking up 8 feet against an 8 foot wall.

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว

      8' boards take up 8 feet of space on the wall no matter what you do. If you place those boards vertically, in quantities most small shops have, you can fit it all within a smaller footprint of maybe 4'. So it's simply a question of would you rather lose 8' of wall space or 4' of wall space and 4' of floor space. No right or wrong, just depends on what space you want to sacrifice. But add to it the ease of accessing boards and never needing a ladder to get to them, for me, vertical wins hands down.

    Vertical is better to prevent cupping and checking because it allows better air flow around the pieces. That's why trees don't cup or develop checking at the ends.

    As a former video production person, I will say, vertical video sucks! No ifs, ands or buts, wrong aspect.
    That said, nice video on storage, just film horizontal.

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't disagree but unfortunately, our opinions don't amount to anything. The platforms push what people want to see and the vast majority of viewers are totally cool with vertical video. It's a segment of the current video content market that cannot be ignored.

    • @elmohead
