  • Here are the first two LPs that Russ Davis of 94Q ‘Jazz Flavours’ put out to promote local Atlanta (GA) artists during 1985-1986. I have the CD version which combines the two LPs, but some of the tracks were not included. So, I ripped both LPs ‘BEST OF JAZZ FLAVOURS CATS l & ll’ ….enjoy!
    Tracklist:
    1. RSVP - “Strange Pavement” 0:00
    2. Cheryl Wilson - “Gotta Take A Chance” 5:34
    3. Steve Hulse - “Dreaming Out Loud” 10:04
    4. Jerome Olds - “Stars In Your Eyes” 13:48
    5. Ricky Keller - “Chanson” 17:43
    6. Tony Carere - “Montana” 22:32
    7. Buddy Causey - “Happy Together” 27:12
    8. Oliver Wells - “Bop Hop” 31:15
    9. Tom Grose & The Varsity - “Put It Out of Your Mind” 35:24
    10. Randy Honea - “Trapizie” 40:17
    11. Dave Ferguson - “Music” 46:07
    12. Glenn Wisenbaker - “Set It Straight” 51:29
    13. Elgin Wells & Nova - “Mirage” 56:26
    14. Ricky Keller - “You’re The One” 1:01:51
    15. Tom Grose & The Varsity - “More of You” 1:07:04
    16. The ‘B’ Team - “Scratching The Surface” 1:11:32
    17. Carol Veto - “Don’t You Think It’s Time” 1:16:29
    18. Ojeda Penn - “Brotherson” 1:21:11
    Most of these songs were not released on solo albums. The only exceptions are Tom Grose & The Varsity, who released both tracks on their ’88 LP ‘She Wants Your Money’, and Randy Honea, who released his solo record ‘Still Life’ in 1986. Both of these rare albums I also have on LP.

    I was proud to produce all of these albums with my good friend and amazing musician Ricky Keller. As the producer of the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the Montreux Atlanta Jazz Festival, i came up with the idea of creating a record label dedicated to our local Atlanta musicians. Russ had created Jazz Flavours at the time, and he was instrumental in the success of these albums and the careers of many musicians by promoting this music on his show. Now 20+ year New Yorkers, Russ and I remain close friends to this day, and still have fond memories of these halcyon days in Atlanta. Mark Johnson

      Russ Davis CD101.9 NYC... the best jazz radio station ever created. Listened for the first time on trip to NYC on Christmas 1988 . I would tape as many hours as i could with TDKS SA and bringing it back home and then buy the music on Tower records. Those were the days. Cds were becoming much more popular those years.

    So happy to run across this today! I Owned both of these (wore them out) , and was so happy to hear Scratching the Surface and Don’t You Think It’s Time again. Jazz Flavours on Sunday evenings were the way to make bill paying palatable.

    I too, listened to Jazz Flavours in the 80's. In fact, the show exposed me to Contemporary Jazz and Instrumental music tracks and led to my being a huge fan of the genre attending many concerts and actually getting involved in the local Jazz scene on the promotions and representation side with then Atlanta local acts Nancee Kahler and Face Up while completing a bachelor's degree in Commercial Music Business from GA State University. Those were the days!

    Jazz Flavours was about the only thing I listened to at night when I was in high school between 82 and 86. (I guarantee you I was the only one on our basketball bus on the way back to Douglas County listening to it on my AM/FM/Cassette Walkman! :D ) Still some of my greatest formative memories! Thank you, 94Q!

      Well, you can still find their 'She Wants Your Money' album from '88 on CD, I believe. I have the vinyl that I got way back at Turtles Records'n'Tapes around '86-7. I saw these guys perform live at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in Chastain park alongside Bob James and the Yellowjackets, as well as a local restraunt/venue Ray's On The River

    I LOVE all the 94Q Jazz Flavours albums. I worked at a Turtle's Records in the late 80's and we had these on in-store rotation quite a bit.....brings back a lot of memories from that time. Also, I recently managed to score CD copies of all of these on Ebay, and have been playing them constantly since I got them.

    1:11:32 i can't get enough of the melody on the chorus!!! i especially like how the song leans hard into the first note on the melody on every chorus. it is as if this song knows it is as good as it is. “Scratching The Surface” is one of best Jazz songs i've ever heard.

    • @KJCMuzique
      @KJCMuzique  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know, that is a rare classic, was played constantly on 94Q in 1986. It's a shame keyboardist Oliver Wells, bassist Ricky Keller and guitarist Pat Buchanan didn't put out an album together as 'The B Team'

    • @CharlesMosley129
      @CharlesMosley129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is a shame. if this song is any indication, those two were "lightning in a bottle". i always wondered what else this group could have composed had they recorded more music.

    Another amazing post, thank you 🙏 the first track, I have to find more material of theirs! Also, the intro is definitely very similar to The Rippingtons ‘Love Notes’ track on the verses. The second track has the most sublime arrangement of chords for a jazz-pop record, and the vocals are perfect, I absolutely loved these first two tracks. The rest was an intriguing listen, the third track I haven’t stopped playing for a week or so 😄😎💥
