This is one case where I'm 100% in for a reboot. I loved this show in the 90s and I'm still ticked it got canceled. It reminded me a lot of the Wing Commander PC games. I just hope they treat it as a proper military/war show and don't do something dumb like turn it into a teen show with kids flying the fighters.

There was quite a lot of world-building with the aliens, intros and androids that could make it interesting as an adult series. It was a must-watch series at the time for me and it could even be better now with CGI and a bigger budget.

I remember this show. I loved the characters and the premise was completely unique to sci-fi at that time. It felt like a dark and gritty version of a space World War 2 where humanity wasn't always pictured in the best light. I think it felt like a kind of mix of the original Starship Troopers and the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

This show has always been near and dear to my heart. I fell in love with it when it first came out while also being frustrated at Fox's handing of it. Not too many shows truly stick with me but this one had. Have it on DVD and periodically binge it. Almost never do that for anything else. To see it redone, with today's tech and story telling, would finally give us the journey that was abruptly ended previously. Always felt the reimagined Battlestar Galactica was influenced by SAAB and given how well that series went, this potentially would be no different. Never forget: In space no one can hear you scream unless it is the battle cry of the United States Marines. Oorah 5-8!

Man I just rewatched the entire season thanks to some dude who threw the remastered version up on TH-cam and I was so thankful. I forgot a lot of what happened. Last time I saw it I was like 15. 42 now lol. This is clearly one of the best sci-fi shows and all us Beyond fans saw BSG ripoff Beyond but we were also thankful to see a show like that get to finish.
They didn’t get a proper chance but if they did a cool reboot now the AI and nipple necks and all that stuff could be explored even more especially the Chig society and what they were all about especially given the fact that they come from Earth because a piece of earth landed on that moon and birthed the Chigs. Anyway I just hope they don’t blow up or kill of any of the main cast of the 58. I love them too much. That series finale was heart breaking. But then again that’s war which is what the show was doing. It did Band if Brothers before Band of Brothers. Some of the stories were heart breaking. Like when Nathan’s brother joins the war and he’s led by an idiot and that idiot gets everyone killed. Horrible stuff. They need to bring back Morrison though maybe as commander of the Saratoga.
Morrison was a bad ass in angriest Angel when he took on that invisible chig ship. That was an awesome episode. Anyway can you tell I love Space Above and Beyond.

  • @SenorGato237
    @SenorGato237 ปีที่แล้ว +4

With SBAB the obvious answer is not a reboot, but a sequel. The ward with the Chiggers has reached a bit of a stalemate as the humans reached technical and military parity with them, and the war has gone roughly cold, except for 20 years of low intensity counter insurgency ops. This would allow the show to explore the cultural and militaristic effects of decades of war on the people and soldiers. That could really hit home, like SBAB originally did for veterans of conventional conflicts.

One thing to remember about the 22 episode seasons on Network TV, is that the episodes had to be 42 minutes long, not 2 minutes shorter not 2 minutes longer. This meant you ended up with episodes with messy storylines that were either 10 mins to long or 20 mins to short half the time. On streaming you can make the episode as long as you need it (within reason) 22x42min episodes =15x60min episodes.

The essential idea of Space: Above and Beyond has all the potential for great story telling, visuals and adventure, everything it needs to be a success. Especially if they can nail an ensemble cast, it could certainly work. Personally I have no investment in previous characters, but it is always cool if the actors of major characters from the original series can get parts cast in other roles, much like Richard Hatch was recast in Battlestar Galactica.

I think this is an IP that needs a second chance. If you think about the dark gritty tv that we've been getting on streaming services, a space combat show would slide right in. Sci-fi's BSG reboot is in some way an evolution of what this show was trying to do and it had a fantastic run on a network.
It would also be nice to have some of the original actors come back in different roles to give them some vindication but to allow for the new cast to shine.

All on board for this! My brother and I loved Space Above and Beyond when they first televised it and were really disappointed when they canceled it especially after the ending that left so many plot threads hanging. And I agree, it needs to be a reimagining rather than a continuation since it won't appeal to a wider audience if it has to require people to know what happened in the obscure original series. With a good production budget, modern CGI, the original creators on board, and the current appreciation for grittier sci-fi this could be a real sleeper hit nowadays especially with current global geopolitical tensions.

I loved this series when it was on, and as a sci-fi geek, I appreciated a lot of original ideas that made it into production, like the cockpits that detached from the Hammerhead fighters for crew ingress and egress. • @kerryedavis
      @kerryedavis ปีที่แล้ว

The detaching cockpits stuff didn't seem like a good idea, so much of what would need to be worked on would be in the parts that were, what, always in vacuum? Seems like it was just a way to have smaller sets. And when you look at the flight deck whatever they called it, those cockpits were way too close together to just drop into place!

I LOVED Space Above & Beyond! I think my favorite episode was 'Who monitors the birds?' It gave great backstory on and insight into Hawkes' character, and had hardly any dialogue, but had some powerful moments. Esp. that WW I German/Brit Christmas Eve vibe where Hawkes and the Chig soldier share a moment where they realize they're not so different - and give each other gifts. Hawke watches the Chig watch the birds flying overhead and that feeling comes again. Of course the inevitable happens and Hawke kills him in the end. I found it such a tragic, though provoking episode. I hated that it only got 1 season, I wanted to know more about the Chig, more about their breeding planet why they kept their eggs in caves, why they declared war. So many questions and no answers. This show was so good.

I loved the show, but it had some flaws, being a 90s network show and of course it got cut too short. It is really a show that lends itself to a reboot, as most of the original story wasn't told and it could have a decent impact these days. It not being a huge name might also open up possibilities for going into some new directions, way less risk ob backlash than SW or ST. Like BSG before it, you have a fairly free hand to work with it. I'm part of this shows problem, I left active service in 91 and I have always been a rabid Sci-Fi freak. For what ever reason though I never watched even a single episode of this show when it aired. I didn't even become aware of it until R Lee Ermey passed from our ranks. After watching it (and I did so in the course of a single weekend) I kind of love it. There are some issue I have but they are all easily corrected. The main pull for me is the show for the most part gets the synergy of Marines pretty spot on. That's very hard to do, the Pacific did this as well. I'm sure most of that came from Dale Dye and I'm not sure if they could capture that level of Marine-ness again without the right person consulting, I don't know if Dale is still actively consulting on films but he was very good at that job. I would love to see how the rest of the series plays out but it will be hard to properly capture what the original had and that was the embodiment of the Marine Corps spirit.
I know we are a prideful bunch and we have a bit of a swagger and that's what comes across in most productions, but this show somehow managed show the actual brotherhood we share in a way that was both present and subtle. I know after the past 20 years or so of conflict that those that came after me endured, a show like this they would devour if only they get the quiet parts just right.
I do hope this gets picked back up and I pray that they have good people consulting on it. The stories by themselves were great but the characters and their interactions and that special something that screams Marines is what seals the deal.
For any devils reading this Semper Fi

100% YES! Absolutely deserves a reboot. I hope the original cast can be brought on in some manner, whether they are older now and the war rages on, or some new character role.

Personally, I think S.A.A.B. doesn't need a reimagining: just a reboot with new cast.
    Babylon 5: the same.
Both series had excellent special effects/stories (except for the Zarg in just 1 episode of B5.)
And S.A.A.B. ended in an infuriating cliffhanger that screamed for at least 1 more episode.

If this is being revived/rebooted then hopefully it will do it justice - it was criminally underrated and cut short way before its time. I also felt that so called reimagined Galactica (2003) basically ripped off Space Above and Beyond (as well as The Terminator, Blade Runner and Westworld 1973) and was never a bonafide reboot of Battlestar Galactica (as envisioned by Glen A Larson). Anyway, Space Above and Beyond had so much potential and I was also wondering what happened to the Vansen and co after the season finale + the revelation that the Chigs perhaps did originate from Earth (?) along with so much unrealized lore that hopefully can be brought back in some form or other with a reboot. 🤔😉🤩😎💪👏🤞✌️👍

Absolutely, a reboot of this series would be amazing if done right. You have the technology now for building out your Universe in a more realistic way as far as visuals are concerned. If the writers are good and they write good dialogue good scenarios then finding good actors is should not be a problem. As long as they allow the people who love the show to write the show and direct the show and produced the show and leave the chair sitting people pushing pencil writing paperwork people off the set out of the production room then they should do fine. But if you've never looked at the series or you've never had any idea of what this series is about then you should not have anything to do with the production of the series you should just hand over the paychecks and let the people do what they need to do and stay out of it. I know that's probably an easy thing for me to say being that I don't have any money so I'm not going to be one of the investors but as a fan who would be helping you to regain that money back from your investment I would say if you're an investor and you don't have any idea what they're doing keep it that way and just sit back and reap the rewards. But hey I could be wrong...

  • @MoOrion

As recent remakes have shown... The current people in charge of productions at Disney and elsewhere are not interested in making good shows that honor and stay true to their origins. They're more interested in destroying anything and everything they can get their hands on and insulting the fans who are upset by this destruction. I loved Space Above and Beyond back when it aired. It got no sales push after it aired either... I'm pretty sure the DVDs I have of it are bootlegs... I would hate to see Space Above and Beyond receive the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of time, Willow, or Velma treatment. Only 2 of those trash fires are Disney... but the pattern of destruction is across all media companies. The best thing that could happen to Space Above and Beyond is be delayed until the people who killed the above IPs are gone.

I have only now had this come up & only had your channel appear over the last few months.
I really do hope they continue from where they left off, with consideration to the time between, eg: creating a gap of 1 generation to allow for new cast players + any from the original who are still alive & willing to resume their role 30 years on.
It was popular in Australia, as are most SciFi, but these days airing of anything not in the "reality" or "competition" genres gets relegated to viewing times changing every week &/or in non peak viewing times late at night to predawn, when few can keep their eyes open enough to enjoy any episode in full. Usually, after a month, they are replaced with "shopping" programs, mostly from America, some with Australian voice over in parts, such as phone number & price in "X" number of easy payments, etc.
The networks are trying to eliminate "free TV" & get people to subscribe if they want to view good programs.

"Ahead of it's time?" Yes. I agree. I also heard when it was initially cancelled the reason was that they didn't rush the store to reveal more about the Chigs, and FOX wanted to be able to fully merchandise the show. So since the producers didn't want to let FOX start making a LOT Of toys, they got the boot.

    • @franciscodanconia4324

Back then Fox was incapable of marketing anything sci fi correctly other than X-Files. They cancelled Beyond, screwed up Sliders, and then just dumped Firefly episodes in a heap on the network.

I'd love to see the show return! Despite what's going on with streaming and entertainment these days, SAAB would serve a niche audience and rope in people who don't want to see anything far too wacky in terms of sci-fi. We get loads of wacky scifi from the superhero genre already so this may be a good palate cleanser.
As long as the production studio keeps the expectations reasonable (don't set out to make a nonsensically overblown budget heavy show and leave the original duo alone) we ought to do well.

We need to push to get this show going again! It was ahead of its time and given the conflicts we have going now and the new tech in-play... They could expose audiences to modern warfare in a futuristic setting while also theorizing what future warfare would look like in a interstallar battlefield.

I think this is a great show to reboot! It's hard for me to imagine a Firefly or B5 reboot simply because the magic of those shows came from the charisma of the leads and the writing staff they had. Try to reboot these and you miss some of what made them essential. Don't get me wrong, I loved the original Space actors. But the concept for Space doesn't seem like it necessarily have to be linked to those specific characters. It was always a grunt's eye view of a war in space. You could focus on another squadron and characters and give those actors and writers a chance to take things in new direction, rather than trying to imitate the old. I also love that Morgan and Wong may be involved. I'd love to see what the rest of their story was, especially now that viewer interests have caught up to where Space was in the 90's.
