Here's how I made some Insulated feral cat shelters with reflective mylar insulation, a mylar door flap, and attached awnings. Please remember to add plenty of fresh, clean, dry straw as bedding for your shelters. Cloth or rags will get wet and freeze and should not be used. Here's a very short clip showing one of our huge possums enjoying the shelters. • Our huge possum "Tank"...

    If you want to buy a well-designed, ready-to-use, feral cat shelter this one is affordable. You will need to put it together. It is fairly well built and you could make it even better by adding some Styrofoam sheeting insulation. Even without added insulation, it is much better than sleeping out in the cold weather. bit.ly/3QxYhTg

    watching this after i went all in this winter.. upgraded the house of a stray i take care for over 2 years.. wooded house.. isofoam (the best one for houses).. sealed.. heated floor and a 1500w heater that blows in.. yeah not cheap to run.. but that old scared stray boy signed for long term rent.

    Thank you so much for making this!! I just made my first cat shelter. For the inside container I chose to use a 48 can styrofoam cooler and put down 2 layers of mylar on the bottom of it for extra warmth. I absolutely loved your idea of how to make a little awning with a hair dryer along with the swinging door. I didn't have any fancy sanders on hand, but a 100/180 grit nail file worked just fine to soften the edges of the entry. I'm so proud of how mine turned out! Hope my little feral I feed uses it 💜

      Thanks for your kind words, Brandy. And thank you so much for your kind efforts to help your feral cat. Fresh clean straw bedding is very important. We have three ferals right now that we did the TNR process for (we have done this for a number of them) and we have 2 former ferals in our house as pets. I feel so sorry for ferals as it gets cold out and am thankful for people like you and others who help these poor critters.

      @@nightstringers Hi, Night Stringer. If you watch the video you will see that the styrofoam was only used during the fabrication process to make room for the straw that would replace it in the final product. There is no styrofoam in the finished shelters. Thanks for looking out for the critters.

    I'm building 2 houses right now, it's getting very cold in ID, and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping all those beautiful creatures so they can have a better winter. I just want to mention that I am adding 2 doors in each "winter house" for the safety of the cats or the animal that's gonna use the "winter house" since this ones are gonna be in a area of my property where i can't keep my eyes on it at night.
    Again thank you for your kindness and for inspiring others to help the creatures we share the planet with.

      Hi, @bigcatloverelys6405. Mine are on my back porch and under my deck with 24/7 camera monitoring but I think you have a good plan if placing them where larger animals aren't afraid to approach the shelter. The conflict between having a warmer animal vs a safer animal is always a difficult decision. Safer is probably the better option. One thing I like about these shelters with an awning is it not only shields from snow and rain but makes it harder for larger predators to get in the shelter. Thank you for helping the animals stay warmer.

    • @Fixitforgetit
      @Fixitforgetit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Pacheco de Castro. Thank you for your kind comment and suggestion. I have made shelters with two doors before. This is especially important in areas with predators. These shelters are right next to our house and we have cameras monitoring them all the time. We have lived here for 30 years and have never had any large predators like a coyote anywhere near our house. When I made these shelters I weighed the safety concerns with the need for the critter to stay warm. To a certain extent, a shelter with 2 doors is a bit of a wind tunnel. It is really difficult for a cat or possum to retain their body heat when there are 2 doors. It really gets cold where we live. Since predators don't come around our home and the shelters are mostly used by possums we opted for one door to try to help them stay warm. The awning also helps keep larger animals from entering the shelter.

We have actually had a couple raccoons go inside a couple shelters a couple of times but they never stayed in them. They just seemed curious. I was shocked that they could fit in there. • @Fixitforgetit
      @Fixitforgetit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your concern, @leonienolan511. These are very well-ventilated. The door lets air in and the top pushes up a bit due to the upward pressure from the straw. That creates a small air gap around the lid. The possums absolutely love these shelters. They are in and out of them throughout the day. They gather dry leaves and straw in little bundles and carry them in their tails to the shelter to make it their own. They are fun to watch knowing they are so much warmer with these shelters.

    Love this DIY home! Hi fellow animal lovers! We recently purchased the Frisco Outdoor Wooden Cat House with Retractable Roof, by Chewys. Im feeding 4 feral cats as I await our local TNR group, and ordered 4. It is elevated and has a sloped roof with one entrance. Our yard has been bisected by a chain link fence - my husband is a carpenter. Im going to add straw and have a few ideas for insulation. Because I rescue large breed doggies, there's really no huge chance that any preditors will venture thru - and the cats are fed and will be sheltered in the back half of the back yard. @@vanessalovesdogs7549 Straw only is the best option for bedding inside the shelter. Any sort of cloth, strips of cloth, towels, etc., will attract moisture from the cat's body, paws, and breath. The moisture in the cloth will then freeze and the feral will stop using the shelter. Straw stays nice and dry. Neighbors of ours put some towels in their shelter and soon after that the ferals stopped using the shelters. When we learned what they did we told them to see if the towels were frozen and they were. After they removed the frozen towels and replaced them with fresh straw the ferals moved back into the shelters. Thanks for caring for the ferals.

      @Fixitforgetit  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, LeahStormGaming. Straw is an excellent bedding choice for feral shelters because it has a nice insulating factor, won't mold as easily as hey, and tends to stay nice and dry. Since you are allergic you may want to have a family member or friend pack the shelter with straw so you aren't exposed to it. If that isn't an option some have suggested using shredded paper or cardboard as bedding. The downside is it is much more likely to get wet and freeze than straw and if that happens the feral cat will stop using the shelter. Good luck and thanks for helping these sweet critters.

    The flap is not a good idea. I see the reasoning to keep water or snow away from the opening, but if that flap were to close somehow, their would be no air for the cat to breathe also trapping the animal inside. I would go with some 6" tubing. At the least, drill some vent holes on the side close to the top.

    • @Fixitforgetit
      @Fixitforgetit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tip. We use these up close to our house and monitor them with cameras 24/7. We've never had a feral use one yet in over a year. We have had a couple raccoons go in them for a short visit but mostly possums use them. They love them. It would be hard for the flap to get stuck closed due to the plastic fold "memory." Even if the flap were to get stuck down there's a gap around the door where I cut and sanded it plus the top is stuffed thick with straw and that leaves a bit of an air gap where the bungee cords get pushed up a bit. I appreciate you looking out for the critters but we keep a close eye on them throughout the day year-round.

      Hi, Burken Productions. The reason for the straw is that is what All About Animals and other professionals recommend. It is best for dryness, warmth, and insulation. Cloth gets wet and will freeze. My neighbors called me and wanted to know if I had any idea why their ferals stopped using their shelters. I asked if they had cloth towels, blankets, etc., in the shelters. They said they did. I told them to replace it with straw. When they checked the shelters the cloth was wet and frozen. When they replaced it with straw the cats started using the shelters again.

      @@Lillygal55 Thanks, Lilly. I feel so sorry for these precious creatures. They are the essence of innocence.
      If you need a quick makeshift feral shelter you could do this until you get a more substantial shelter. Get a larger and smaller box about the size of the boxes in my video. Put a bed of straw inside the smaller box and put it in the larger box. Pack straw between the two boxes and cut holes in both boxes for a doorway. Then take a large 55-gallon plastic trash bag and wrap the larger outer box with the bag while using duct tape to secure the plastic bag in place. Try to put the shelter in a place where it is protected from the weather like a carport or covered porch. Then it would be good to get a more solid insulated plastic shelter as soon as possible. We put food out for them and heated water bowls. A little effort and love makes a huge difference in their lives as they struggle to survive and stay warm in the winter. Thank you for caring for these sweet critters.

      @@Lillygal55 My pleasure, Lilly. You could try putting one on your porch. We have several possums that are staying in our shelters now. We have a WiFi camera set up and it is really fun watching them go in and out of the shelters. Two of them went into one together so they could snuggle. We also put one near a woodpile at the edge of the woods behind our yard. You could try it on your porch or out where you can have the shelter somewhat protected by a woodpile or structure. Thanks for caring about helping these sweet critters.

    Have you seen cats use it?

      Hi, C Mc. That's a great question. Unfortunately, I have not seen a cat use any of the four shelters we have. I have three shelters with one door and one with two doors. Two ferals are hanging around and we feed them daily. Neither of them show any interest in any of the shelters. Only possums are interested in them. They love them. I have a larger shelter I made a few years ago and I modified one of the 3 single-door shelters in this video into a two-door shelter. Unfortunately, that didn't entice them to try the shelter. At least they are there if they ever want to use them.

      Hi, kristin. It can get a bit expensive and there are videos that show less expensive plans. We wanted to make out shelters this way to try to make them warm and the little awning will hopefully keep water out of the entryway. Thanks for your kind effort to help animals in need of warm dry shelter.

      My experience is Lowes prices generally bit high. WalMart seems to have lowest price for type totes used in this tutorial.

      @@knolltop314 I agree. I got mine at Walmart.

      Hi, Kristin. That is a pretty high price. Both totes would be about $22.00 at Walmart. I put the links in the description. Thanks for caring for the ferals.

      Hi, Burken Productions. Thanks for your concern but the corners are very smooth and perfectly safe.
