Thanks Lauren - I've tried over the years to make 'continuous bias binding' to no avail until now! Thank you so much for your clear and precise instructions - I've finally cracked it thanks to you!
I have been sewing on and off for 40 years, but have never been completely satisfied with a finished garment. I watched all your tutorials and employed your techniques for making and applying the bias binding. I’m delighted to be able to say that I have a ‘perfect’ top. The bias binding video is the best - easy to follow, perfect results. Thank you so much!
Hi Lauren. I have only been watching your you tube videos for a couple of weeks. I have watched other videos previously on how to make your own bias binding and have never been able to do it. However, after watching your video, I have actually made one continuous strip of bias binding. I can't thank you enough. I'm so pleased with myself. Thank you so much for posting this video and making it easy to understand.
Thank you for this tutorial. I've made continuous bias binding twice before, but your instructions are so much clearer. This will be my go-to reference from now on.
This is a great tutorial thank you! You included a couple of points which have been missing in others that I've used in the past, which always meant that my binding was a bit of a haphazard mess! Thank you! 😊
Perfect tutorial Lauren! I will add I use a light spray starch to my fabric square before I cut it. That little bit of sizing helps the bias tape stay folded as you run it through the bias maker! 😊 Please share the navy tank top pattern....it looked like a bit of a boatneck, which I love!
Thank you :) the Navy top pattern is the simple sleeveless top from my book, Learn to Sew with Lauren. I added pin tucks to it and made a tutorial on this a few years ago - here is the link.... guthrie-ghani.co.uk/blog/simple-sleeveless-top-blog-series-adding-in-pin-tucks-tutorial
Thank you so much Lauren. I seem to mess things up when I try to make continuous bias ;-), but you have cleared some things up for me:-) Wonderful tutorial. Gabrielle
Hello, the 45 degree angle is for woven fabrics only. If you are working with stretch then it's best to check out my jersey neckbands video which explains how to bind necklines with stretchy fabric :)
Hi :) This is probably a fairly simple question but I’m just beginning... does the fabric type of the bias binding need to match the garment you are making? So if I’m using jersey to make a dress, I need to use a jersey bias binding? :)
Hi Katie, Yeh your right, it is better if the type of binding matching the fabric you are using but...you don't use bias binding for jersey or stretch fabrics. I've got another video of how to do jersey neckbands which you might find useful. The purpose of the binding for woven fabrics being cut on the bias is so that it stretches. However, with jersey fabric, it is already stretchy so you don't need to cut it on the bias and the way you sew it on is a bit different to but the other video shows you how :)
Lauren Guthrie Thank you :) I’m going to make a Named Clothing “Kielo”! Have bought some cheap jersey to make a practice version (although if it works it’ll be fine for real life!). Have ordered some lovely moss coloured Tencel and Bamboo jersey in a grey/blue for the next two!! I love being handmade at work :)
Thank you Diane, its a Brother innovis 420 that I use at the moment. I've used a few different models of Brother over the years and always been pleased with them :)
Thanks Lauren. I have just made some bias binding- yay! But my bias maker was useless. Does the width have to be exact? - because my binding wouldn’t turn over properly
Hi Jo, Yeh if its not turning over it might be too narrow. Usually with lighter weight and really fine fabric you have to cut it a little wider than a more stable or thicker fabric. There is a balance though, I've cut it a little too wide before and you get wrinkles in it where it should be flat, but then you just have to press it flat again trim a little off in that case. Hope that helps :)
Hello sage, usually the back of the packet that the bias binding maker comes in will tell you. For the clover 18mm one it recommends 35mm for medium weight fabrics and 40mm for lighter weight fabrics. Hope that helps :)
Thanks Ruth. I just wanted to double check what width it was you meant? The width of the binding I like to use for dressmaking is 18mm and that is the width of the strip when it has been folded once at each side - so then when you open it out totally flat with no folds its likely to be between 35mm and 40mm. I hope that helps, just let me know if not :)
Hi Lauren, great tutorial again and I love the idea of the continuous bias binding.... will have to have a go at that👍. Love the shirt that you had on....is it another Kalle shirt... very nice💞😘
Lauren Guthrie I made the short version with the covered plaquette with the fabric that you used for yours, as I thought it was so nice 💞. I'm very pleased with it and proud of myself for working it all out as it was my first shirt make. I'll definitely be making more of those. Keeping my eyes open for your new fabric video 😊👍😘

I’ve never come across that continuous loop method. V helpful thanks!
Thanks Lauren great clear video. Never seen the continuous loop way before x

How long would the bias binding strip be if you use a 50*50cm square?
Is the 45 degree angle necessary if working with four way stretch fabric? Thanks for the great tutorial 👍🏽

👍😀
How wide do you cut the fabric to fit the various sized bias binder tools?
Hello sage, usually the back of the packet that the bias binding maker comes in will tell you. For the clover 18mm one it recommends 35mm for medium weight fabrics and 40mm for lighter weight fabrics. Hope that helps :)
Good tutorial. I often get the width muddled up so is it 40mm wide?

Lauren Guthrie Thank you that helps as I’ve sometimes cut it to narrow by measuring bought bias. 🤗
