    "Bobby Moore was the best defender in the history of the game"
    Franz Beckenbauer
    "My captain, my leader, my right-hand man. He was the spirit and the heartbeat of the team. A cool, calculating footballer I could trust with my life. He was the supreme professional, the best I ever worked with. Without him England would never have won the World Cup."
    Alf Ramsey
    "He was my friend as well as the greatest defender I ever played against. The world has lost one of its greatest football players and an honourable gentleman."
    Pelé
    "Moore was the best defender I have ever seen."
    Sir Alex Ferguson
    "There should be a law against him. He knows what's happening 20 minutes before everyone else."
    Jock Stein

    As a West Ham fan I was always scared that we had a massive bias towards Bobby. After watching this multiple times and other videos, I had nothing to be worried about. He looked lightyears ahead of every situation. Nothing dirty, just impeccable timing and understanding. The perfect defender - truly.

    • @HarmsFootball
      @HarmsFootball  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Absolutely. His reading of the game was impeccable - probably on par with Baresi. And on the basis of both 1966 and 1970 World Cups I'd say that he is the single most impressive centre back in history of that competition (only Beckenbauer would've probably been ahead of him if he hadn't played in midfield in 2 out of 3 of his World Cups).

    I only saw Bobby Moore twice in the flesh; very much towards the end of his career with Fulham, both matches against my team Palace. On 12 April 1974, he played in midfield and his lack of pace was exposed as Palace won 3-1 at Craven Cottage. Four days later, the teams met again (Easter fixtures!) at Selhurst Park and Moore was back in defence and marshalled his team brilliantly so that Fulham won 2-0 and pretty well condemned Palace to relegation to the then Division 3. I remember that Palace’s manager, Malcolm Allison (who was of course Moore’s mentor at West Ham) touchingly singled out his former protege for special praise after the second match.

  • @bernardjay379
    @bernardjay379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    His reading of the game was sensational, despite his lack of pace. His greatness is based on he saw moves before they developed and he seldom gave the ball away.

    Thanks for putting this together this is class. I was too young to have ever seen Bobby play but being a West Ham fan you're always told by the older generation just how good he was, I actually didnt realise just how good he was, he seemed to have everything except pace, but he didnt need that anyway because his anticipation and positional sense was off the charts. He was a ball playing centre half before ball playing centre halfs were evem a thing! What a man. R.I.P Mooro ⚒️

    Moore was simply immaculate wasn't he? So calm and composed, but solid as they came.
    The display against Brazil in the 70 WC, doesn't half get the credit it deserves imo, just an exhibition in defensive prowess. His work from deep in the victorious 66 WC campaign was pivotal too, with England lacking a proper deeper creative influence. Stiles was a pure holding midfielder, with Peters and Ball playing shuttling roles, although Sir Bobby Charlton played a creative roaming role. Moore was more or less the one pulling the strings from deep with Charlton running the show overall.
