    As a species we are so lucky that so much of Bach's work was not lost and survives. His preeminent musical intuition and understanding has never been surpassed. What was lost is unpriceable!

    • @svetsarkirurgen2
      @svetsarkirurgen2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes. Reading his biography is very interesting, but also absolutely devastating to realize how much of this wonderful mans work that is lost.

      Is it lost for certain? As in unrecoverable?

    • @jonahansen
      @jonahansen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@nightshadegatito I suppose it's possible someone might uncover some heretofore undiscovered manuscripts, but it's been so long since they were written, and a lot of people have been looking for almost as long. Every now and then things like that happen - take the dead sea scrolls. But Bach was so prolific and it's clear he wrote a lot more than anyone has found to date. In his time his music was considered antiquated and was not really popular, or so I've heard, so it wasn't considered valuable then.

      @riversandstones1644 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Duh... Stupid comment? Bach's music IS NOT for "concentration". It deserves a HIGH DEGREE OF CONCENTRATION ITSELF. Its required if you are to hear the strettos, the subject inversions, the countersubjects. If you think its 'background music' you are dumb, and Bach would've slapped you.
      Every music written by a skilled composer is stimulating, it doesnt matter the period.

    • @pedroenrique9613
      @pedroenrique9613 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@MrGuilherme1100 Its a voice leading indication. It means the voice that was being written on the lower staff and played with the left hand now switches to the upper staff and thus is played by the right hand. In this case it was the Alto.
      Its important to be able to clearly identify the voice leading of the 4 parts so these indications are of much value to the performer or student of the fugue.

    Very true thinkermanmusic. Contrary to the 1st book of the WTC, the 2nd book has all sorts of variants. Kenneth Gilbert, the performer here, decided to side with the smaller "ossias" which I could not fit into the screen. I'm impressed with your ear and observation and I thank you for pointing that out.

I'll have to quote the Bach expert Christoph Wolff: "...the Preludes & Fugues of the WTC manifest his (Bach's) resolve to leave nothing untried, even if it meant exploring avenues where no one had gone before... He set the stage by exploiting fully the chromatic and enharmonic potential of the keys...".

      I would say that missing a Picardy third is a pretty major (pun is definitely intended) mistake, as it really isn't difficult to do. I would be expect that the performer would re-record it, but as this isn't the case: I think that the player might have been working from a different edition (but it's not likely that a Picardy third is something editors would be unsure about).

      While many people consider Mozart as the greatest of all time (and I have no quarrel with that), Bach will always be the greatest for me, even above Mozart and Beethoven, because I cannot think of a single composer who has had such a towering influence on generations of composers that succeeded him. Hnadel, perhaps. But Bach's compositional techniques and harmonies were revolutionary and hardly understood during his time, especially as he became more and more esoteric in his later works. Counterpoint was going out of fashion within the last decade of his life. Yet every major composer of note for the next two centuries at least cited and copied him.

    I find the theme of the G Minor fugue interesting. The same note repeated 6 times generally does not make for an interesting melody, yet the voicing of the fugue definitely makes up for that.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Repeated 7 times in fact!
      There's also a fugue loosely based off a choral where the theme opens with a note repeated 8 times.

    Excellent recording! AS for the work itself, I will follow Albert Einstein's advice: " Regarding Bach's work, I have this to say: listen, play, love, revere and keep your mouth shut!". On question though: which harpsichord is Gilbert playing on, and what's the pitch and the tuning used? I have a feeling it's on the low side(A = 415) and it's not ET. Am I correct?

    You might notice that a lot of Bach's music involving brass and drums was in D-major. This had a lot to do with the instruments back then and D-major, as a consequence, acquired a number of associations.
    If I'm not mistaken, pastoral music (think 6/8 andante) often seems to appear in F major.

    • @doubledoggo5668

      @Bo Qin Bach did not use Gradus ad parnassum for composing. He, as with many other German composers of the Baroque (and less so French and Italian composers), used the thorough-bass method of composition. Most of these pieces are just perfected examples of extemporaneous thorough-bass compositions. No rules are "broken" either. All of these pieces follow the thorough-bass method. There was a lot of music in Bach's time, especially in his years writing the second book of the WTC, that could have "polluted" his ears. Think of Italian and French dance music that did not strictly follow a multiple voice contrapuntal style. Bach was an architect in that he took these styles and adapted them to the contrapuntal style, although less so than, say, a fugue, and brought each style to its full potential. He is doing nothing less here with the WTC2, although working with 2 different styles, the Prelude and Fugue. There are many examples of music, specifically composition styles, at the time that would not be suitable for the prelude or fugue. Again, no rules are broke.

      When one has a solid understanding of the rule, it's the time to break it.

    You're right about the E-flat Magnificat. I've always imagined that that was because it wasn't too difficult to tighten everything up by a half step. Two Christmas examples: The Trumpet Shall Sound from Messiah is in D-Major as is "Großer Herr und starker König" from the Christmas Oratorio, both very trumpety.
    F-major for pastorals isn't universal as you point out. Maybe I'm overly influenced by the Beethoven 6th, but I seem to recall a fair bit of such music in F.

    • @arazaratsyan6478
      @arazaratsyan6478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What Paganini fugue are you thinking of? The first four notes of the A minor fugue are actually a motif that can be found in Handel's Messiah (the "And with His stripes we are healed" chorus), the finale of Haydn's string quartet in F minor Op. 20 no. 5, and Mozart's requiem (the Kyrie Eleison), so it is a surprisingly common theme. If there is a Paganini fugue that contains it I would love to learn about it.

    There has a huge amount of scholarship on how Bach did not actually write for equal temperament. Most people come to the conclusion that is a form of mean-tone temperament. On a period tuned instrument, you would notice a clear difference among the keys. Later, after Bach and into the time of Beethoven, these different key flavors acquired a stronger and stronger sense of distinction according to the affects, colors, moods, and the like.

    If you look and listen very carefully, you'll hear that the version being played by the player isn't the one in the score for the C# major prelude. The difference is in the top voice of the left hand.
    That's the one with quite a lot of different variations being played. So I kind of expected that the score and the playing wouldn't match completely.
    Doesn't mean that you didn't do a wonderful job of course ;-)
