- In 'Bleib bei uns denn es will Abend werden', Bach describes the contrast between belief and unbelief, light and darkness, and salvation and sin. Two disciples on the road to Emmaus have their doubts about the resurrection of Christ. They beg a man accompanying them to stay a little longer, as night is falling, the day is drawing to a close and they are afraid. But they did not see that all the time they had been talking to the resurrected Christ.

Absolutely Perfect! I spent over three decades as a Countertenor, and thus (fair or not) I have "proprietary" feelings about all the Alto work ... and I am delighted to say, "Hochgelobter Gottes Sohn" made me weep! Mr Mead is A Miracle .. and I have never heard the Oboe da Caccia obbligato performed more beautifully!
I would also remark that this tempo stands out as being ideal, as it brings into focus the particularly witty bass line
Después de millones de años, una criatura se alzo sobre sus dos patas, empezó a utilizar herramientas, aprendió a utilizar el fuego, desarrolló un lenguaje, se protegió de la lluvia, el frío, de los animales salvajes, aprendió a vivir en comunidad, desarrollo el afecto, el amor, la compasión.. el arte, se asomó al universo, pensó en un Dios. Hambre, enfermedad, guerra,muerte, miseras acompañaron a esta criatura durante milenios... pero un día nació Bach y se puso a componer...Mereció la pena tanto esfuerzo.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Kantate mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt synchronisierten Tönen aller historischen Instrumente sowie herrlichen Stimmen vierer genialen Solisten und gut vereinigten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors. Der erfahrene Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Ensemble im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit völlig effektiver Dynamik. Echt tiefempfunden!

Bald ist Ostern und so kann diese Botschaft uns wunderbar berühren und Bach hat es wunderbar in Töne gesetzt. Gerade in unserer sorgenvollen Zeit ist diese Kantate stärkend und wunderbar musiziert von der Netherlands Bach Society. Dank an alle Solisten. Ich freue mich auf weitere Einspielungen.

Every aspect of this performance is so magnificently clean.
This is what you feel when you listen to perfection.
The Road to Emmaus is one of the supreme narratives of doubt and faith. Though I am a devoted Christian, I believe its themes transcend religion. And the way Bach expresses these in music has left me with an abiding realisation of that narrative. We marvel at how he tells the entire story in the opening chorus, with a minimum of lyrics; and at how he portrays individual relationships with doubt, culminating in that final tenor aria, which has many answers. Reasons for doubt come up so often in our lives, but an awareness of eternal truth can be our resolve: a trust that we will 'know [Christ] in the breaking of bread'. How can one ever put it into words? I can only return again and again to Bach.
I would rather listen to Bach than drink the blood of Christ or eat the body of Christ!

Sensacional. Bellísima cantata. Interpretación excelente. Bach en estado puro. Admirable el bajo continuo con clave, cello y órgano. Soberbia el aria de soprano (trío) y su pefecto contrapunto.. ¡Gracias Veldhoven. y su exquisita orquesta! Emilio Sanz. Madrid.
Hermosísima cantata!! Delicadísima y sinceramente emotiva interpretación de la Netherlands Bach Society de la que cada día se me va haciendo más difícil prescindir cuando de Bach se trata. Cuidan hasta el mínimo detalle. Las voces impecables y sutiles traslucen hasta la emoción más sutil. La grabación magnífica. Se distinguen los timbres de cada uno de los miembros del coro. Es una delicia para el espiritu y el oido. Destacar la emocionada interpretación de Daniel Johannsen. Maravillosa la Choral a tres voces tiernamente angelicales que nos transportan a otra esfera. Con los pies sobre la tierra nos dejamos elevar hasta el cielo.
Muy acertado su comentario, ciertamente se vuelve cada vez más imprescindible seguir deleitándose y transportándose al universo exquisito de Bach!

The Sound of the 5 string cello (9:08 ff) is so amazing. it makes me wonder why is that Instrument only used when Bach demands it explicitly? Why have we become so dogmatic to not use it for his other ( and also Vivaldi's ) cello works?
It is a viola da gamba. Good on Van Veldhoven for using it here! More popular in Bach's time - it is used in some of the J S Bach-Stiftung performances, too
@@johnadams9127 it is an "ordinary" five stringed piccolo cello with gut strings. No gamba - Actually Bach used it very seldom - I understand that the number of strings could be misleading, but:
1) gamba has seven (or six in earlier baroque period) strings
2) a completely different shape of the body
3) a fretted fingerboard
ps the instrument used here doesn't looks exactly to be a smaller one... I'd expected a more reduced body

The one bone I have to pick with the Bach Society is their continued use of countertenors to fill the Alto slots, pushing out women who are already kicked around enough.

@@petatap In fact, Bach seems to have loved the oboe da caccia. There are many parts in his cantatas and oratorios for it.
I've played this part on English horn. It's challenging even on a modern instrument!

Entirely agree. Her name is Lucia Swarts. As well as her continuo work for the NBS in almost all of their versions of the cantatas, as a soloist she also performs for them the Cello Suite No 1.

Ernste Dinge: außerdem wissen wir durch CPEB (u.a., usw.), dass Vater schnell zu spielen mochte.
In der Fuge (Chor) Artikulation zwischen Concertisten und Ripieno nicht gut; Zu opernhaft, zu dramatisch.
Trotz, Oboe und Fagott gut gespielt sind.
Hier vermutlich Fassung 1740 (Oboe da Caccia/N.2, und V. Piccolo/Choral) - laut Titelblatt Bachs, durch Sohn CPEB.
"dass Vater schnell zu spielen mochte." Ha! Ha! Ha! Wie lustig!!!! Hier haben wir es mit einem Andante zu tun, es ist kein Largo!!!!!!! Was heißt "schneller spielen"? Allegro vivace???? Wie dumm!!!!!!! Allein das Rezitativ "Es hat die Dunkelheit..." ist ein Wunderwerk! Außerdem: "Zu opernhaft, zu dramatisch." hat nicht mit irgendeiner Technik zu tun sondern eher mit jemandes Gefühlen = völlig subjektiv!
