Depending on how far north you go. Generally mottled ducks don't migrate to northern climates they primarily are found along the gulf coast area. If you harvest a black with white baring on the wings it's possible a mallard cross. They are common in our area of the Ohio River.

I don't know what's better..... watching birds work or knocking them down! What a hunt and congrats on the duck. I started duck hunting with my little brother 3 years ago and we always have fun. Got a really nice banded Drake Mallard with him this year, and he ended his season with 7 consecutive drake limits. It was a good year here in wisconsin.
That, was absolutely incredible to watch. Beautiful countryside, a successful hunt, and thank you for the extra footage of just the birds. The noise as they passed over was incredible.
Originally from Wisconsin but living in Pennsylvania right now and I can attest to black ducks. This summer all I saw were mallards and a few woodies, and then all the mallards seemed to have been replaced with black ducks and now back to mallards. I way prefer mallards over a dumb black duck!🥴

We had them in the saltmarshes of Virginia. Very wary duck...always a prize. I literally giggled myself at the excitement of the hunter who shot it....good footage. Great to see that passion.

Been hunting Minnesota for 20 years and I’ve never seen one or heard of one being shot hunting. I have seen one in the boundary waters last summer hanging by himself. Was a special moment watching him I could imagine what it’s like shooting one.

Heck yeah man Black Ducks are a treat. When I used to hunt in the swamps of Georgia, every now and then a Black Duck or 2 would show up amongst the Woodies and occasional Mallards. Flew down from Maine or Eastern Canada I imagine. Just a beautiful and mysterious creature.
Back in the day duck limits were run by points. There weren't individual limits per species in a daily limit you were allowed one hundred points and different species were worth a certain amount of points. Black ducks were worth one hundred points and if you shot one your day was over or you were over your limit.
that depends on if you shot the black first, if you did then your day was done, if you shot a 20 point duck and then shot a black you were still legal if it put you over on points. thats how it was here in east tn, may be different where your from

Great video! Here in Hayward Wisconsin I have seen local blackducks. Have harvested 3 myself in the 15 years of waterfowl hunting. One more than the number of pintail harvested. My son has 1 blackduck his belt. Yes the farther east you go they are more common. When was this video taken? Seems like there is a great push of birds in your area. It's funny how different ducks are common in different areas. I live in central texas, and last year I shot 4 drake pintails on 4 consecutive hunts. Only shot one Mallard ever. Never seen a black duck, probably never will unless I leave the state.
I always thought it was so cool to hear the thunder of mallinados, especially when the Eagles swooped in for VA duck or goose in Skagit Bay, when the Eagles came the hunters along the shore's , in field's cooned a few bird's that decided to go feed in the marsh or field's after being poked at by Eagle's, it a fun sight.
Congrats on the black duck boys. They are a very special duck. We get a few here in middle Tennessee on a good migration but the closer you get to the Mississippi River, the rarer they get. They obviously rarely cross the big muddy so that IS a very special bird. Congrats again and I look forward to seeing the mount.

Congrats on the awesome hunt. I don’t want to be a downer but it is really hard to tell if that was a full 100% black duck or not. Normally black ducks do not have the white trailing edge on the speculum (where the iridescent feathers are on the wing). That bird looked like it had a pretty obvious white trailing edge. Normally that indicates a Mottled Duck. There are a lot of websites out there to compare the two species. Mottled ducks would be super rare for your area too. It is just hard to tell. There are places out there to confirm the DNA and get the real story you would just have to look them up. Congrats regardless on the awesome bird!!!
Amazing! The rarest duck where I am and I’ve shot once is a wood duck, we live near the open plains, so it’s odd to see wood ducks here. I have also recently shot a merganser looking thing, and a testosterone inbound female mallard.
Hey guys, enjoy your channel, watch it mostly thru my streaming feed , so don't comment much. But when I saw that black duck size, that was cool. I started hunting waterfowl in Indiana in the 70's and we had a property that had two small rivers run thru it and blacks were plentiful, Moved to Central Ohio early nineties and have a couple rivers again that hold lots of blacks late, when the icebergs are floating. Congrats on the shoot, now gotta run, found the X for Canada geese in corn, me and the dog only in the morning, shoot em up.

All the footage of ducks swirling at the end is basically duck hunting ASMR. Duck hunters would for sure fall asleep to that.
