Garbage collectors rarely work alone. There is usually are 1-2 collectors (usually one for each side of the street) and one driver behind the wheel of the truck. Really, having to get in and out of the truck all the time is not all that efficient..

I used to drive a snow plow truck late at night, and I can confirm that being in a super isolated place late at night can be really creepy. Being in the cab is nice, but for me, I found listening to the radio to be the most calming. Even when I would step out of the cab to have a smoke or something, I would always turn up the radio and crack the window a bit just so I could hear the music echoing off into the night. And it sure is quiet out there in the country late at night. Real quiet. I only ever started to feel anxious if it was dead quiet. I have this personal belief that it is a lot harder for bad things to happen to you when you're listening to good music (not logical I know, but it's the truth).
When I could hear the radio, and the rumble of the engine, and see the glow of the tail lights in the snow, I actually found it pretty relaxing. Just a man and his truck against the world.
It's the quiet that would get to me. Like when I would park the truck at the end of my shift and be walking out of the shop. That's when I would start to hear all the creepy noises. And that's usually when I would start humming to myself... the countryside in the day is very beautiful, but at night it can be pretty creepy.

What you mention about sound has a real basis and is hard coded in human psichology.
A theory states that the quantity of sound humans make helped them survive during prehistoric times, since no other animal makes that amount of sound, signaling predators humans aren't alone and hence make their presence known.
Many cultures believe sound eliminates or scares off Evil spirits, hence wind chimes, bells and such other sound making objects around the world.

I completely agree with you when it comes to the cabin being comfy; I used to always be super on edge when I was a kid about going out to the car at night, literally running to the passenger door and throwing myself inside. But once my parents started driving I’d be so cosy, even pressing my face up against the glass as if to mock the imaginary demon that tried to grab me.
For comparison; When I went down to Cornwall with a few friends for a camping trip once, they went down into town to have a meal, but I was feeling sick so I decided to stay at the campsite to rest a little. Once I was feeling better, I decided to take a nearly 2 hour walk down the country lanes on foot (this was before I could drive). The whole time I was paranoid of someone or something jumping out of the bushes on either side of the road, either killing me, or chasing me all the way to the town. Meanwhile I only had a crappy little pocket knife and my phone’s light, which left a massive space around and behind me completely black, the perfect blind spot for something to stalk me in. I’ll stick to the car thanks.

    • @AutumnWind92
      @AutumnWind92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bruh, that imaginary demon is so relatable. I did exactly the same thing even the staring through the car window as a kid and feeling safe from the creatures in the dark. Not in Cornwall but Bulgaria tho.

It’s supposed to reveal that you’ve actually been picking up bodies this whole time. Every garbage bag you picked up was a corpse left there by whoever or whatever was killing people, and your secret is that you know but aren’t telling anyone. I could definitely be wrong though, and the game seems to be intentionally up for interpretation.

I used to be a garbage truck driver in Portland Oregon. It is dangerous for you but also others walking and vehicles. There are some areas where you have to make decisions to squeeze through vehicles on either side of you, and you have to watch out of homeless people. They get hit by vehicles often enough. A buddy of mine ran over a dudes legs in the front loader when he thought it was a tarp laying in the road just off the curb. Company settled and it was a big deal. Garbage truck drivers get paid ok, better than most CDL drivers of the same level because of the reason you gave but I don’t think enough for the hazards. It can be quite difficult and physical if you don’t work for a huge company that has a sizable force of pickup trucks that go out and make sure the commercial trash containers are out and in an available position to stab with the forks. I worked for a company where the drivers had to hop out of the truck and drag the cans to the proper positions, stab it, dump it, hop back out and wheel it back and then leave. Lot of work hopping in and out and pushing those around. Lots of overtime though, the overtime makes the money for sure. You’re not supposed to salvage from the dump or trash or sidewalk, big companies like Waste Management have cameras and people watching you all over inside your truck and out and they fire people for stuff like that, but smaller companies you can get away with a little bit of that. People do it all the time anyway.

The bit near the beginning with the talk about working in the early hours of the morning reminds me of something that happened to me about two years ago.
I'm not a sanitation worker, but I do work early morning shifts. I'm right on the edge of where the suburbs give away into the forests and rural area, so I'm almost always the only person out there (except for passing cars). I've always walked to work and I take a pathway that runs near the highway - there are no lights along there so it's very dark, but I know where I'm going so it's never a problem. Anyway, I'm just starting my walk at about 3:30AM when I hear this massively loud BANG, like something heavy and metallic falling. There's almost no cars even on the highway so I have no idea what it was, and I keep walking. I cross the highway and head over to the start of the pathway when I see the large maintenance access hatch is wide open; I'd never seen it open before and it's quite large, about ~1.5m square, and it's usually secured with metal ties and would take a good bit of effort to open. It's right on the edge of the lights from the highway so I can't see into it, only just the big dark hole inside. There are no cones, no tape, no workers, no trucks; just that big empty pit and one of the hatch doors tossed to one side. When I heard the bang I was about 300m away from the hatch so that came down with some force for it to be so loud that far away. I kept my distance in case someone or something was hiding inside, and continued on to work. There was nothing there on my way back home after the sun had risen, so I still have no clue what that was all about.

Getting scary thoughts in my head while at nightshift at the factory I work at is a recipe to make myself unnecessarily nervous! There are fewer of us present and a factory is never silent even when it gets more quiet. There are always noises. If you start thinking about horror, paranormal and so on, you will surely make yourself jumpy. At my work, there was a background noise that in nightshift, when things were more quiet, could be mistaken with distant human speech. Even while I Knew that its an audio illusion, I often kept stopping and listening to it when I was alone in that section. Made it very difficult to just relax when I Had nothing to do. Even as an adult ass person I often get the creeps while I have to cross empty sections in the factory during night.
For context: The factory I work at used to be massive until the 90's where a strong decline started. The factory has entire buildings that stand abandoned for years but still equipped as when it was in use. Sometimes there are sections in the same building where one section is brightly lit and clean, under use but the next hall is dim and derelict yet there are still a few things that are in use there. A storeage room or a pump or something. It can be a very eerie mixture of a factory at operation and an abandoned industrial site.

Found that subtle scare you wanted.
Frankly, I think that town is haunted, or worse you're doing maintenance on an SCP. I still don't know what that Red thing was but it's called Redville for some reason. I have 2 guesses, given the ending. The residents though, whatever they are, were definitely the ones moving the signs so you wouldn't miss any trash. And while some if not all all of those bags had bodies there was still likely trash, given the ketchup bottle. That knife was the most interesting, I still don't know if these shadows are killers, victims, in the bags themselves, or just otherworldly entities pulling strings here. That knife though? it was intact, clean, and freshly tossed into the one knocked over can. It's a murder weapon. And Humans are definitely living here, and more and more trash is being made otherwise that cat and those mice would have nothing to live off of but if the local crematorium/sanitation station is in on it I don't really understand why they tossed it. Though these shadows are the ones putting the bags out. Maybe the knife belonged to whoever was in the bag.

Oh my god I literally went down to the comments section to point that scare out. I had the feeling like "did the game's shadows glitch out or was there something there" when I was watching that part, and I was SHOCKED to see what I had actually seen and not realized.

I think the game is just very symbolic. I think the player is actually working for a crematorium and much like the note says, lies to their friends and family about their job. They don't work in sanitation, they work for a crematorium. They maybe just don't want to admit it?
Those who need them could be the dead or maybe their relatives? Or both? I like that it's left out to interpretation.

I've always loved driving at night. If I have to drive long distances, I would specifically drive at night because there is way less traffic and it's actually easier to see without the sun in my eyes. And I'd rather use the daylight hours for something other than sitting in the car in rush hour traffic trying to travel somewhere. Plus driving on the open highways at night and listening to music is really therapeutic and relaxing.

After discovering your channel and watching you play through No one lives under the Lighthouse and Closing Shift this is my third playthrough from you.
Usually I don't watch but listen while working on drawings, but today I committed myself to watching only, and while doing so it occurred to me how much the creeping dread and being immersed in these unsettling stories help me to distract my mind from anxiety inducing, triggering, debilitating thoughts that I deal with on a daily basis.
It also helps that I can connect with you, you don't scream, you are calm, but unlike most other gamers I watched, you are, like myself, terrified.
You were the first person I could connect with in this regard, seeing you draw back in alarm on camera, I saw myself in you and that genuine reaction. This, along with the already immersive games you play, really help to drown myself in your content, in the best way possible, but I thought the wording would convey best what I mean, since these are usually dark and unsettling stories. I'm thinking of continuing with your playthrough of Darkwood, one of my all time favourite games. Thank you for your work, and do take care of yourself!

When I delivered papers, I drove from 4/5 in the morning until 7 or so. Few, if any people were out. Me and the garbage guys grew a sort of understanding in so that we no longer had to do things like "Guess who gets to go first at the intersection" type deal. It was cozy. The pay sucked but it was cozy. I got many, many hours of TH-cam videos listened to for those 4 years.
Oh and garbage drivers' pay depends on the state. On average, one would make 46,909 a year in New York but only 29,855 a year in North Carolina. North Dakota is almost the perfect median of those extremes, making 38,385 a year, just 3 dollars more than the average of NY and NC's salaries. For comparison, the national average salary is 56,310.
At least for Waste Management (where my father used to work), it is technically against the rules for employees to take home anything they find in a landfill. Of course, if you happen to be a manager and know how to "requisition" things without no one noticing...it is possible. As for the grunts collecting the garbage, I can't say. It might be against the rules, but as long as no one on the crew is a snitch, I imagine they do end up taking things they find home with them.
When people are askign whether they've been down a certain street before when it's just repeating assets, you know your horror game is good lol
Holy shit, that whole "guy in drivers seat disappears when the corner is rounded" thing was fantastic. Through the previous half hour, I was kinda creeped out but it was more intrigue than anything. But then that trick was pulled, I got HARD goosebumps all over both my legs. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.
"Maybe what we're dealing with isn't paranormal at all..."

The people who live in this town were killing people and you were just cleaning up their mess and taking it to this crematorium to cover it up, and keep it a secret. The note did say "We" indicating you are not alone in this. The ghost who turned into a bag, indicated that those are people. Talking about garbage man wages, I wonder if it depends on the country, but where I'm from it's the diplomas you have that make you big money, it doesn't matter how "dangerous" a job is, if it doesn't require a diploma, you won't get paid a lot.

I think it's all symbolic pretending you're a garbage man saying that that's what you do to your friends and family and living in denial when really you are a coroner or some similar profession trying to detach yourself from all of the horrors you've witnessed and how you're complacent in covering up the crimes of the community because you can just add another body to the pile and nobody really cares you do it because you're scared the people of the corrupt town will hurt you if you don't but your own guilt manifests

I believe looking through people's trash is illegal.
picking up junk on the ground. I suppose isn't illegal, but I don't think it's a good idea.
who know's whose stds and tetanus stuff is on random junk.
