    She didn't "shut down" anybody, liars. She spoke intelligently and straight-forwardly and without rancor or sarcasm or trying to correct any reporter. Your headline is a clickbait lie. It worked, yes. But you're hacks.

    • @nolanolivier6791
      @nolanolivier6791 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It appears the clip didn't actually capture the moment; apparently, the reporter asked the male panelists (specifically) why cinema still matters; blanchett, as head of the panel, responded with:'so actresses, don't answer that question; you wouldn't know how to answer that question.' I can't find any evidence, however; other than metro's own article which posits that the event -allegedly' occurred. I think if it happened, then she was absolutely right to humiliate the reporter, but why that footage isn't shown is beyond me.

    • @Britiswitz
      @Britiswitz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nolan Olivier the full panel is here th-cam.com/video/ydf6_6ldqdw/w-d-xo.html
      At 20:40 a reporter asks “the panel, but more specifically the filmmakers...” not directly asking men only, but as 3/4 directors on the panel were male and of the acting talent 3/4 were female it is subtly weighted towards asking the male half of the panel. (The 9th panel member was a female singer-songwriter)

      She's not doing it for the art. She's doing it for fair business practices in her industry. We don't know if it would improve the art but it wouldn't hurt to bring new and different people into the traditional mix. Maybe then Hollywood would stop shoving reboots and sequels down our throats. Social justice warriors are the reason we no longer have things like slavery. And they usually aren't seeking approval or validation, so they'll be fine without yours.

Jesus Christ. And can you tell those Africans and Islamists still openly operating the slave trade that slavery no longer exists, can you tell the millions of men, women and children of all races still trafficked all over the globe, because I'm sure they'll give you a medal for your work.

    She makes some very good points. Only one complaint from me, and I blame too many psychology/sociology/etc. type classes over the years.... people keep saying 'Gender' at times when 'Sex' would be the more appropriate/accurate term. I'm not saying that Gender isn't an issue, but if she is saying there aren't enough Women/Females who are identified as Female due to what it says on their driver's licence, you should use the term 'sex' not 'gender'. Sex = Physical characterteristics of a person and, Gender = The non-physical (i.e. Male/Female pronouns, wearing dresses or slacks, wearing short/long hair, make up/not, body language)... I will probably get screamed at for this comment. Still thought I would put the idea/vocab lesson out there for people to mull over. Thought I have to agree with what she says about how there does need to be a greater number of people who aren't 40+ year old white males. Females, women of color, men of color, Asian, deaf, Native Americans, transgender, women over 45, lesbians, biracial, etc. etc. etc.

    Transgender population in the US is about 1.4 million out of about 325 million. Without confirming the math thats about .3 percent, and Uk is about .1 percent. That would mean that once every 300 movies a transgender director would be represented, if they occur at the same interval as other members of the population. Even expecting that creative work would attract a group, still it would be rare for a film directed/starred by a transgender to appear every year. That is not even considering the likelihood of commercial success. Audiences often want stories about themselves or people they can identify with. It seems far more impactful if transgender stories were in mediums that didn't rely on commercial success. Just a small amount of money could make several youtube, twitch productions, or a small full size movie can be done for 1-4 million and appear on netflix or streaming. Saying that the Canne Festival's mission is diversity, and an offhand remark that it already failed because of lack of a transgender director was silly. Women make up at least 50% of the population. It is far more reasonable to expect equal treatment with such a high representation. However there are reasons that make equity harder for women to achieve in an industry. Pure Equity may never be achieved with out an artificial control.... but is that what anybody wants?

      How is it mutually exclusive?Are you saying that if I have two sons, raise them the exact same way under the same household, they both should want the same thing? So if one wants to be a street mime and the other a CEO, then something is wrong with that? why the fuck cant people just like what they like,and prefer the prefer? • @Nemophilist850

      It's mutually exclusive because equality is a social construct. It doesn't exist outside of the law. No group is equal to another, nor is any individual, or even the same person to themselves in different times of their life. As for your hypothetical, I'm not sure what you're getting at.

    Remember everyone, this is an entertainment industry. Do not feel pressured by others to consume their beliefs. Aliens is a fun & inspirational film with a diverse mix of relatable characters & a strong female lead. There is nothing new about this sudden crusade. Cate would appreciate the spotlight & all of your attention.

    I'm all for diversity, but you have feminists and SJW's that think women should be given a leg up for no reason other than their gender. If you look at some of the newer films, they are creating terrible female characters just for the sake of having them. Take Rey from star wars. She's nothing but a "Mary Sue" character, who can do anything and everything with no training. I like strong women roles, like Ripley in the Alien movies, who develope over time through hardship. The way it should be. Many of the women roles today are ridiculous and totally unbelievable.

      #1. Men have been getting a leg up for no reason other than their gender for centuries. And now you, presumably a man, are upset because a small minority of feminists think they deserve to be given a leg up after an entire lifetime of being put in second place? Just take a moment to think about that.
      #2. The vast majority of women aren't looking for a leg up just because they are women. They are looking to be EQUAL. You can concentrate on and complain about the small % of people in any social movement who take things one step too far, but that is an easy excuse. Those people do not represent the large majority of people (in this case women) who are fighting for equality.

    • @cinemar
      @cinemar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're never going to have all things equal in the film industry. More men make films than women do. It has nothing to do with prejudice. There are some great female filmmakers but nowhere near as many as there are great male filmmakers. Of all the films I love and the directors I follow there are barely any that are women. The reason can't just be a leg up for men and women are treated unfairly. There are other forces at play here.

    The reporter is not sexist. Just because you don't like a question, doesn't make the person who asked it, a bad person. And you can disagree with the statement or agree. And equating beauty with stupidity applies in Western culture to both men and women. Jocks and bimbos mean the same thing.

    What if women don’t won’t to be involved? Women don’t have to be in every occupation to be equall!!! If you really are serious about judging work on its merits, then you can’t have equal numbers of gender or race, just so you feel better.

    This race diversity and gender equality theory is lacking so much sense. People choose different careers. Women often choose this, and in contrast men choose that. Stop focusing SO MUCH on race and gender. Its not worth it.

    • @ohwellwhateverr
      @ohwellwhateverr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not that simple. If a young girl looks at her DVD collection and sees very few female directors, she will form a picture of an industry that is exclusive and hostile to females. You can't underestimate the power of role models.

    • @julianabezakova985
      @julianabezakova985 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They CHOSE to not be directors!... You cant just force someone to do a job just for the sake of "equality" oh my god...

    • @ohwellwhateverr
      @ohwellwhateverr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What? There's no "forcing" involved. Blanchett is talking about giving a greater platform to pre-existing female directors who have produced great work but on small budgets. My point about the importance of role models is that if an industry appears homosocial and like it's only accepting of a certain type of person, that can influence people who don't conform to that type to hesitate and look for opportunities elsewhere. I can't count the times have I heard of teenage boys who have wanted to apply for degrees in nursing or to become a midwife but are ashamed of the social stigma surrounding male nurses. It works both ways.

    Cate cannot re-write history. Time killed Chaos and created beauty. Kronos killed Uranus and from it's blood Aphrodite appeared. The fierce Big Bang energy cooled and ordered by Time created Beauty and everything else emerged after. Beauty precludes intelligence.
    Eons after Uranus (heaven, chaos) faded into unknown, Kronos (time) fathered Zeus(power) which fathered Athena (wisdom). But Cate likes pretty little slogans which sound good and virtuous, taken probably from a book of good manners or something of the sort.
