@@beardfmThe problem with companies shipping things before they are ready is not just frustrated users but this videos and others I’ve seen with similar problems will live on the internet forever, putting potential customers off buying it - Something high up executives don’t seem to understand when they say “just ship it, we’ll fix it later”
I've been a Switchbot user for 10+ years & have multiple SB devices. They have always been a solid IoT company, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed with them. Being a Harmony user I'm definitely rooting for this remote. Seems like they released it a little prematurely. I'm hoping this was intentional to generate more data & feedback to bring the remote up the level you & I are anticipating. I've got faith in Switchbot & I hope they don't let me down with this one, because this has the potential to be huge.
I have been looking for a Universal remote that replaces the Harmony, and I saw this SwitchBot. I thought it was promising, but I found this video explaining if I should buy the remote. Well done explaining your input; I really appreciate it.
As a fan of the Logitech Harmony, I was really looking forward to the SwitchBot Universal Remote. I am so glad I watched this video. It was so well done and explained in an easy-to-follow way exactly all the steps you took and how frustrating the experience was. I have never been so impressed with the storytelling experience while being upset at how bad the product experience was.
Yeah, I think we're all desperate for that perfect Harmony replacement, but people forget that Logitech had years of development (and failure) before they had that evergreen product. What we need is a company who doesn't just wanna make a quick buck and can stick around for the long haul.
So, I just spent two FRUSTRATING HOURS trying to set this up, first as a universal remote, then with the Hub Mini set up as a Matter device. Pretty much faced all the issues you mentioned. At this stage, I am just going to return this. Not waiting for the promise of future updates.
Awesome video. I purchased one and was very disappointed at the lack of "universal" support or basic devices like an audio receiver, as noted in the video. I emailed support, and they suggested I add the hub and try again. This needs to be more accurate as I purchased the device, assuming basic functionality would be 'out of the box' working. I am returning it and will continue to search for a replacement for my Harmory (RIP). Great video, Stephen.
For search devices , there is no icon for audio or home receiver, neither xbox ps2/3 game console use for play dvd bluray !!!! console Hub seem to be use to record infrared ( receiver) , remote seem to have ir emitter.bluetooth remote cant be record....( reverse ing..?). The number of 2024 infrared and bluetooth remote in switchbot remote database seem not existant( very few, many old around 2010).All best recommanded devices in all kind of review ( journal, youtube, ASR forum) should be supported ( like wiim ultra audio stereo streamer bluetooth remote....). Strange way to detect model (TV or real remote) by only use on/off button ! You ll have to create i think most of the time your own remote from real remote. There is not a lot of brand for universal remote that support bluetooth remote. Switchbit do it fir firestick and apple ( great add for us). The only value is their device connect to their hub that already support matter ( not thread) compatible with their hardware bluetooth device ( motor, sensor ).I think the software on remote could run on android since all android phone has more spec than their universal remote...In the past : ir remote from promixis girder let us create a custom layout remote. Many years after; Harmony logitech hardware remote with their windows os software let user share our custom remote recirding and let us create custom action. In 2024 many devices are control using bluetooth remote ( less power like BLE) and wifi by android apk and microphone on remote to use with voice assistant ( amazon, google, appke). Swichbot use bluetooth but miss microphone ( next version?). Switchbot database of ir and bt remote should be update ti succeed . I find mail best way to send suggestion wit photo ... but switchbot implement in apk a kind of web application and use chat for support. The remote layout gui they implement use the same design ( widget icon ) . To compare with webdesign , they use a kind of framework like bootstrap to easy and quickly create their remote look and feel . The remote database use one input form field text that could be remote model name or device name model. Really hope wifi ll be use for remote and more bluetooth remote ll be supported. i ll try to ask to implement gui remote to see if they care of their customers by chat? Bluetooth is not a common protocol in domotic because bluetooth device are not bluetooth repeater ( mesh network like zigbee zwave) and share same frequency that others device ( 1st wifi version at 2,5ghz ) . I understand why end user give up ! Chat is available but no forum where people can express freely only private chat ( see playstore before buying but limit number of words for users omments)
Good video, if those bugs and kinks get worked out (like you've mentioned from twitter DM's) I can see this company being a great entry point for me to finally get into the smart home eco system
They might add updates, which I believe they will , however this is the product as it is today and Switchbot shouldn't have released this in its current form.
Thanks a bunch for the thorough review. I was tempted to get it but i will hold of till it actually works properly and as advertised. I have the Hub2 already so maybe i will play around with the scenes in the meantime :)
Today I got the latest firmware update. What a mess, you can control more devices now, but I have a JVC projector and it's not on the list, I also have a dreo fan and it's not on the list and I have a marantz receiver of course not on the list. What do you really support?
I was really excited when I saw this remote (I already have hub2 and many SwitchBot devices). I think I read that many of the functions would be coming in early July. I sure hope they get this sorted. Thanks for reviewing.
Out of curiosity if you check settings-general-matter accessories, do you see the hub 2 there? If so delete it and try and add to Apple home after resetting the hub 2.
Oh shoot, this absolutely worked. I have the buttons in the Home app now... will wait for some bug fixes that SwitchBot has promised and will review again!
Thanks for the great video. All of my AV gear is in a cupboard controlled by my Harmony Hub, with one IR blaster from the hub coming through the wall to control my TV. When I start an activity from my Harmony Elite remote I basically rely on the hub and blaster to do all the work. So, with this device, am I right to assume I could trigger a hub activity from the remote, but then the remote won't auto switch to an activity-style button setup with the remote? Also, does the hub have any IR blaster extensions?
they need to fix the bugs and the weird setup. Also Home Assistant support is a must have. Im okay if this needs an Hub 2 but Home Assistant should be Incredible high on their list to implement
Have you seen they’ve just released an app update to correct the issue of scanning remotes from other devices? Although not sure if you’ve tried yet but they broke the routine setup on the Hubs a while ago, any complex routines fire the commands in a random order 🙈, only fix is to put a delay between commands (which is a minimum of 5 seconds and you’re limited to 10 delays total), makes menu navigation unusable now via routines (this feature worked fine on the original Hub release firmwares).
Same experience for me as well, which is a huge bummer especially after the high their S10 vacmop had me on. Big deflation and huge opportunity missed. If they had two ground breaking products in a row like that it would have been enormous for their brand and customer base
Your comments at 3:35 about only the Hub 2 having Matter support. There has since been an update to the Hub Mini so if you have the newer USB-C model then you can have Matter Support. Whether the Hub Mini USB-C has the support for the remote I have no idea.
Sounds like a come back in 9/12 months product. In the meantime I’m going to move my broadlink rm pro and use that for ir blasting so jumping around hdmi inputs is less of a hassle, because I had to remove the hdmi controlled hub in the middle because my problem device was the Apple TV, if anything else turned on it would wake up and steal the input everytime
On Amazon it also says scenes require a network connection so those don't work without the Internet yet claim it's all local. Well, they say network but what else would it be for? The remote connects to the hub via BT and this thing seems useless without the hub as it doesn't have WiFi, only BT and IR.. It also says Matter only works through home kit which is an odd thing to say because matter is supposed to be universal. I guess the hub may need internet access for older Zigbee devices but outside that there is zero reason for it to need an internal connection after setup to work.
It seems like not having the Denon remote control was a Huge factor in your issues and would have been a better review with that included. I think you maybe got early adopter issues bc I have seen other reviews without these issues.
Technically I was able to program all the buttons for the Denon I needed matching from the Harmony hub. The biggest issues are inherent bugs with the device and software. Will update if I see improvements with coming updates.
I saw the remote in a Verge article and was excited until I found out it required their hub. Like why? Why can't we have a simple dirt cheap Matter remote with a few buttons to control lights and stuff? Something along the lines of a WizMote but Matter compatible. Why are all of them janky and cost $35+?
Next gen SB Remote should mix 1) unfolded circle remote 3 and 2) ZM-RM01 4) aquara M2. IR Database are old and too limited ( 3 devices for BLE remote.).i have LG TV magic remote so SB remote unusable ( wait update). No Audio video receiver icon ...so no remote devices (wiim ultra) in DB. Hub is mandatory to record IR with SB hardware remote , SB hub 2 ll do less than aquara M3 hub that is also thread border router. All SB devices use BT beetween hub and devices ( no zigbee no zwave see).
Seems like you made this process so much harder. I have Dreo fans, Govee lights, and even generic fans. This remote controls my marantz and TV and everything else. So I watched this vid like why are you making this so difficult.....
Did you actually reset the Hub2 into Matter Pairing mode? There is a trick, and SwitchBot has given explicit Pairing Instructions. They just released it way too soon. Hopefully they sort these things out quickly. There are many harmony people that want an off-ramp.
Same, their co-founder DM's me and said they're working on a bunch of fixes, so hopefully soon!
I had such HIGH hopes. The design looks solid, the promise and market is there. Keeping working on it SwitchBot.
They DM'd me after I publish to say they're working on a bunch of bug fixes, so, fingers crossed!

No, doesnt control my Dreo fan, Jvc projector, Marantz cinema 70s and dyson heating and cooling fan.
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day.
Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for
